Obesity measured by outer abdominal fat may cause facet joint arthritis at the lumbar spine - Zurich Open Repository and...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES There is a lack of studies on obesity measured by outer abdominal fat (OAF), which describes abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness with regard to spino-pelvic parameters. We investigated OAF and its physiologic values on computed tomography (CT) scans with regard to age, gender, facet joint (FJ) arthritis, FJ orientation, lumbar lordosis (LL) and pelvic incidence (PI). MATERIAL AND METHOD CT scans of 620 individuals, with a mean age of 42.5 years were reviewed. OAF, lumbar FJs, LL and PI were evaluated. RESULTS OAF showed a mean value of 19.7 millimeters (mm). It significantly increased with age until 70 years and decreased thereafter (p ⩽ 0.0001). There was no significant gender difference. OAF was significantly increased with FJ arthritis (p=0.01), but not with FJ orientation. OAF was not significantly associated with LL or PI.CONCLUSION: OAF on CT scans has a mean value of 19.7 millimeters. It is higher in the older age groups until 70 years. "The Effect of Hamstring Lengthening on Pelvic Tilt and Lumbar Lordosis" by Michael Scott Braman
A direct correlation between hamstring tightness and severity of lower back pain (LBP) has been previously reported. Hamstring contraction creates knee flexion, hip extension and posterior pelvic tilt. Posterior pelvic tilt causes the lumbar spine to flatten (hypolordosis) which places pressure on the anterior structures of the spine, including the intervertebral disc. This increased pressure may predispose individuals to disc degeneration and associated pain. For this reason, hamstring stretching is often prescribed to alleviate LBP, however, the effect of hamstring lengthening on the kinematics of the lumbar spine and pelvis is not well understood. Accurate measurement of lumbar spine movement is difficult to obtain in a motion capture laboratory due to subtle differences in marker placement, tissue interface and distribution. Therefore, the purpose of this study was twofold. The first goal was to develop and validate a method that allows accurate comparison of LL measurements from ...http://dc.uthsc.edu/dissertations/407/
Validation of Goniometric Method in the Assessment of Lordosis by Radiographic Analysis
Background & Aims: Cervical spine is prone to various abnormalities and sport injuries. There is still no non-aggressive measurement instrument with high reliability for easy and rapid assessment of cervical spine secondary complications. The aim of this research was to investigate the validity of goniometric method for cervical lordosis measurement through radiography. Method: In this study, 16 female students of Kerman Bahonar University with mean age of 19.81±1.06 years, mean weight of 56.56±2.78kg, and mean height of 1.60±1.96m who had forward head deformity, were participated. The measurements of deformity were made by goniometry and radiography. Radiography images were analyzed with Kapandji, Cobb, Harrison methods and a similar goniometric method. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used for comparison of goniometric and Radiographic results. Results: There was a significant correlation between the results of goniometry and the similar method on radiographic images in measuring ...http://jkmu.kmu.ac.ir/article_16576.html

With this summery of part of the model of tonic function in mind I want to return to the notion that the tonus of the muscles that flex, extend, rotate, and sidebend the spine are also a central focus of tonic function. The principal states that a reduction of tonus in the muscles that control Iumbar and cervical lordosis have an especially propitious effect on tonic function, and therefore on intrinsic movement. Stated more simply intrinsic movement is always initiated by a lengthening of the spine. Where does lengthening specifically take place? Key places of reduction of tonus seem to be the suboccipital muscles of the neck which are the most densely spindled muscles of the bodyAbrams, V. Diastematomyelia Type 1 with Multiple Spinal Cord and Vertebral Abnormalities in a Child
A 7-year-old male was brought with a marked spinal deformity. Physical examination showed rotational scoliosis and loss of lumbar lordosis. The patient was referred for a Magnetic Resonance İmaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine. MRI showed a left-convex rotational scoliosis and loss of lumbar lordosis. There was a fusion of T10-T11-T12 vertebral bodies with a partial excision. Spinal canal was widening at the level L2-L4. The terminal cone was reaching L5 level. At the level of T10 spine, the spinal cord was divided into two hemicords and two dural tubes up to the upper part of the L3 body. There was a bone septum, dividing the spinal canal into two separate canals including two hemicords in separate dural tubes.https://www.clinmedjournals.org/articles/cmil/cmil-3-067.php?jid=cmil

57 patients aged 54.6 (29 - 75) were reviewed. Six patients were overweighted. The level of arthrodesis was L2L3 in 6 cases, L3L4 in 9 cases, L4L5 in 31 cases, L5S1 in 11 cases. Cage height was 9 to 16 mm. Posterior instrmentation was rigid in 24 cases, and semi-rigid in 33 cases. Intersomatic bone graft represented 59.6% (20 - 95) of the vertebral plateau. While 47 patients had no change in lordosis after surgery, lordosis decreased of 8.2 (5 - 12) in ten cases. Lordosis decrease at follow-up was tested against age, obesity, level, bone graft amount, posterior instrumentation rigidity, post-op lordosis increase, and cage height.. ...http://www.egms.de/static/en/meetings/dgnc2005/05dgnc0008.shtml

... is a condition characterized by an inward curving of the spine. The condition can be caused by many factors, such as arthritis, muscle problems, or obesity. Depending on the severity, individuals with this condition may have varying diffculty in performing physical tasks, such as walking and running. In very severe cases, individuals may have trouble performing basic day-to-day tasks. Treatment for this condition is based on the severity of the curving. Doctors may suggest individuals wear a spinal brace to correct the inner curving of the spine. Doctors may also suggest surgery in more severe cases ...http://diseaseinfosearch.org/Lordosis/4311

A prominent feature of lordosis, the sexual posturing of female rats, is lumbar dorsiflexion (rump elevation). This movement exposes the perineum and permits the male to intromit. Experiments were done to characterize the muscles used in lumbar dorsiflexion, to locate their motoneurons, and to describe some physiologic inputs to these muscles. First, the dorsal and ventral muscles of the back and tail of the female Norway rat were described. Of these muscles, the lumbar epaxial muscles lateral longissimus and the transversospinalis muscles are both trunk muscles and capable of producing dorsiflexion: they are suited for producing the rump elevation of lordosis. To see if they are used during lordosis, they were selectively ablated in hormone-primed female rats that were subsequently tested in mating encounters with male rats. Lordosis was rated as amount of rump elevation. Compared to control animals, animals with ablations ...https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/15591

A wedge plate inserter/impactor instrument is provided primarily for holding, inserting, repositioning, removing, impacting, extracting, and otherwise manipulating an artificial intervertebral disc having features suitable for being manipulated thereby. A spring-loaded holding pin of the instrument can be used to engage a corresponding hole on the disc and confront the angled surfaces of the disc to enable the holding and manipulation of the disc. A forward wedge extension of the inserter/impactor has upper and lower surfaces that engage inwardly facing surfaces of the disc to hold the baseplates of the disc at a preferred lordosis angle with respect to one another. The instrument can engage the disc from a variety of surgical approach angles.http://www.google.fr/patents/US20030229358?hl=fr&output=html_text
