*  Reuse of excreta - Wikipedia
Reuse of excreta (or re-use or use of excreta) refers to the safe, beneficial use of animal or human excreta, i.e. feces (or faeces in British English) and urine. Such beneficial use involves mainly the nutrient, organic matter and energy contained in excreta, rather than the water content (as is the case for wastewater reuse). Reuse of excreta can involve using it as soil conditioner or fertilizer in agriculture, gardening, aquaculture or horticultural activities. Excreta can also be used as a fuel source or as a building material. Excreta contains resources that can be recovered: plant-available nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium as well as micronutrients such as sulphur and organic matter. These resources which are contained in excreta or in domestic wastewater (sewage) have traditionally been used in agriculture in many countries. They are still being used in agriculture to this day, but the practice is often carried out in an ...

*  Viruses | Free Full-Text | A Current Overview of Two Viroids That Infect Chrysanthemums: Chrysanthemum stunt viroid and...
The chrysanthemum (Dendranthema X grandiflorum) belongs to the family Asteraceae and it is one of the most popular flowers in the world. Viroids are the smallest known plant pathogens. They consist of a circular, single-stranded RNA, which does not encode a protein. Chrysanthemums are a common host for two different viroids, the Chrysanthemum stunt viroid (CSVd) and the Chrysanthemum chlorotic mottle viroid (CChMVd). These viroids are quite different from each other in structure and function. Here, we reviewed research associated with CSVd and CChMVd that covered disease symptoms, identification, host range, nucleotide sequences, phylogenetic relationships, structures, replication mechanisms, symptom determinants, detection methods, viroid elimination, and development of viroid resistant chrysanthemums, among other studies. We propose that the chrysanthemum and these two viroids represent convenient genetic resources for host-viroid interaction studies.

*  Crops: Chrysanthemum
History. The Florists' potted chrysanthemum is a complex hybrid composed of crosses among several annual and perennial species native to China. Though grown by the Chinese for over 2000 years, cultivars were not available in Europe until the 1800s. In the United States around 1889, Elmer D. Smith hybridized and named over 500 cultivars. However, real development of the chrysanthemum as a pot crop has occurred since the 1940's. The chrysanthemum used in pot culture today is a hardy or semi-hardy herbaceous perennial with flowers in a wide range of colors.. Flower. The chrysanthemum is a composite inflorescence with the individual flowers borne on a flat or convex receptacle called a capitulum. The capitulum is surrounded by an involucre of bracts. A single flower head has one or more outside rows of ray flowers, which are pistillate and a center (brown or green "eye") composed of disk flowers, which are dioecious.. Cultivars. Chrysanthemum are available in a wide range of flower colors, flower ...

*  Welcome Baby: Book Review: Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum thinks that her name is absolutely perfect. She likes how it looks, she likes how it sounds, and she likes that is her name and hers alone. Until she gets to kindergarten and enters a world full of short, names like Alex, Sam, Sue, Jill, and Joe. And then Victoria comes along, telling Chrysanthemum that she is named after her grandmother and that that is a lot more special than being named after a silly old flower. Suddenly, Chrysanthemum doesn't like her name so much any more. After all, it's hard to find solace and regain lost self-esteem when your classmates are threatening to "pluck" and "smell" you. Her parents try to soothe her wounded soul with "hugs, kisses, and Parcheesi," but nothing seems to help. And then the class meets the new music teacher, Mrs. Twinkle -- Mrs. Delphinium Twinkle, that is. When Mrs. Twinkle announces that she wants to name her baby the prettiest name she has ever heard, and that that name is Chrysanthemum, all the kids wish they had flower names, ...

*  IJMS | Free Full-Text | Involvement of CmWRKY10 in Drought Tolerance of Chrysanthemum through the ABA-Signaling Pathway
Drought is one of the important abiotic factors that adversely affects plant growth and production. The WRKY transcription factor plays a pivotal role in plant growth and development, as well as in the elevation of many abiotic stresses. Among three major groups of the WRKY family, the group IIe WRKY has been the least studied in floral crops. Here, we report functional aspects of group IIe WRKY member, i.e., CmWRKY10 in chrysanthemum involved in drought tolerance. The transactivation assay showed that CmWRKY10 had transcriptional activity in yeast cells and subcellular localization demonstrated that it was localized in nucleus. Our previous study showed that CmWRKY10 could be induced by drought in chrysanthemum. Moreover, the overexpression of CmWRKY10 in transgenic chrysanthemum plants improved tolerance to drought stress compared to wild-type (WT). High expression of DREB1A, DREB2A, CuZnSOD, NCED3A, and NCED3B transcripts in overexpressed ...

*  Peonies and Paint: Chrysanthemums in Bloom
Chrysanthemums' meanings are as varied as their blooms. We use them to celebrate November birthdays, as homecoming corsages and for decoration at harvest festivals. They are signs of remembrance at funerals and gravesites. Chrysanthemums can symbolize abundance, wealth and optimism as well as sorrow and sympathy. In Japan, they are an integral part of the Festival of Happiness, and I think they are incredibly happy plants. I wore this kimono when I was a very little girl. Although the chrysanthemums, fans and paper cranes are a rather faded now, it's hard not to smile at this sweetly-designed fabric ...
