*  Phlebotomy for Too Much Iron | HealthLink BC
Phlebotomy is a procedure that removes blood from the body. Regular phlebotomy treats people who have too much iron in their blood, such as with hemochromatosis, or who are producing too many red blood cells, such as with polycythemia. Removing blood regularly decreases iron levels in the body by reducing the number of iron-rich red blood cells.. Health professionals perform phlebotomy in a medical clinic. The process is similar to donating blood. A health professional inserts a needle into a vein in your arm and removes about 500 mL (17 fl oz) of blood. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. You do not need to fast or make special preparations before phlebotomy. But try to eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before phlebotomy. This will prevent dizziness or fainting.. Health professionals will have you sit or lie ...

*  Phlebotomy and Lifestyle and Diet Advices vs Lifestyle and Diet Advices Only in Patients With Dysmetabolic Liversiderosis -...
Insulin resistance-associated hepatic iron overload (IR-HIO), also defined as dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome or dysmetabolic liversiderosis, is a common cause or iron overload in France, mainly in middle-age patients with increased serum ferritin levels associated with normal serum transferrin saturation, and normal serum iron concentration in the absence of other known cause of increased serum ferritin levels.. Treatment includes a combination of dietary measures and physical activity to correct metabolic disorders. Phlebotomies seem to be beneficial when serum ferritin level is high.. This study aims at comparing the effect of iron depletion (by phlebotomy) plus lifestyle and diet advices versus lifestyle and diet advices alone on blood glucose level and insulin sensitivity in subjects with IR-HIO in order to assess the benefits of phlebotomies on the reduction of risk of diabetes and cardiovascular associated complications. ...

*  How to Design a Phlebotomy Room | eHow
A well-designed phlebotomy room is a necessity for any medical center. People are in a phlebotomy room to have their blood drawn, so it needs to be a place that inspires a patient to be trusting and relaxed as well as a place that holds all the necessary tools for the phlebotomist. Safety is also a key consideration in designing this sort of room. The room needs to be a combination of comfort and function. A little bit of planning will go a long way towards making your phlebotomy room efficient and comfortable.. ...

*  The effect of phlebotomy training outcomes on hemolysis rates
METHODS: The hemolysis index (HI) of 43,875 samples was measured before (n=21,512) and after (n=22,363) the switch of blood collection responsibilities. Differences in overall hemolysis rates and the amount of plasma samples with a concentration of free hemoglobin (fHb) above 0.5 g/L and 1 g/L were calculated.. RESULTS: Overall HI as well as the percentage of samples with an fHb concentration ,0.5 g/L decreased after the responsibility for phlebotomy changed. The rate of samples with an fHb concentration ,1 g/L remained unchanged.. CONCLUSIONS: Hemolysis rates were reduced upon passing phlebotomy tasks from untrained physicians on to a trained nursing staff. We therefore conclude that the number of people performing phlebotomy seems to play a minor role, compared to the effect of a standardized training. However, whether a reduction in the number of people involved in blood collection could ...

*  Blood sample haemolysis knowledge among clinical staff and phlebotomists
Reference:. Makhumula-Nkhoma, N., Whittaker, V. and McSherry, R. (2014) Level of confidence in venepuncture and knowledge in determining causes of blood sample haemolysis among clinical staff and phlebotomists. Journal of Clinical Nursing. May 9th. [epub ahead of print].. Abstract:. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between confidence level in venepuncture and knowledge in determining causes of blood sample haemolysis among clinical staff and phlebotomists.. BACKGROUND: Various collection methods are used to perform venepuncture, also called phlebotomy, the act of drawing blood from a patient using a needle. The collection method used has an impact on preanalytical blood sample haemolysis. Haemolysis is the breakdown of red blood cells, which makes the sample unsuitable. Despite available evidence on the common causes, extensive literature search showed a lack of published evidence on the association of haemolysis with staff confidence and ...

*  Amazing Vacuum Tubes May Eliminate Motors | Modern Mechanix | Page 4
IMAGINE a tube, a thing of glass and metal, replacing a motor to operate a piece of machinery. Imagine a fiat bed printing press-or any machine using a reciprocating motion--getting its energy from a glorified descendant of a radio tube.. That's just one of the things that research engineers of the General Electric Company expect to see within the next few years. With Thyratron power tubes and solenoids it is technically possible today.. William C. White, engineer of the vacuum tube research department of General Electric, makes that prediction. The field of vacuum tube engineering, he says, is not to simply do a thing in a different way and with different means, but to do it better and cheaper. It is possible, he adds, that as knowledge of the possibilities of vacuum tubes increases we may have to modify many of our ideas, such as the accepted one that an electric motor is the best and cheapest means of producing mechanical movement, at least in reciprocating parts.. A few steps from his office ...
