*  Phase-independent responses to phase-specific aggregation pheromone in adult desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera:...
Volatiles from solitary-reared (solitarious) and crowd-reared (gregarious) adult male desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), were quantitatively and qualitatively different. In particular, solitarious males did not emit phenylacetonitrile, a key component of the aggregation pheromone produced by gregarious adult males. In laboratory bioassays, solitarious and gregarious adults of both sexes responded similarly to the natural aggregation pheromone blend, the major pheromone component phenylacetonitrile, and a synthetic pheromone blend comprising benzaldehyde, guaiacol, phenylacetonitrile and phenol. EAG measurements showed significant differences in the responsiveness of adults of the two phases to the four synthetic components at high doses; however, the general response patterns were similar. These results suggest that the gregarious adult male aggregation pheromone may play a role in the arrestment and subsequent recruitment of solitarious individuals into ...

Estimating the Area to Sample. Before starting the counts, measure one metre² on the ground to fix the size of the unit to be assessed for grasshoppers in your mind. A meter stick can be carried as a visual tool to give perspective for a one-metre width, if needed. With experience, one can often visualize the necessary width and a meter stick may not be required.. Counting Grasshoppers. To estimate grasshopper density, as you begin walking the 50-metre strip, focus on an area ahead of you that is about one metre². As you walk toward the metre² area, estimate the number of grasshoppers that jump or fly from the area. If grasshopper numbers are high it will not be possible to get an exact count of the number of grasshoppers that jump or fly from the area of your count as you approach it. Estimating the approximate number, or a range (ex, 20 to 30) is sometimes ...

*  Phytosterols as neglected nutrients in grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) - The University of Arizona Campus Repository
Grasshoppers, like most other organisms, require sterols for the production of cellular membranes and, like other animals, as precursors to steroid hormones. However, grasshoppers, like other insects, cannot synthesize sterols de novo and must acquire these essential nutrients from their diets. Survival and performance of five grasshopper species, representing three phylogenetic lineages and with different host preferences, were compared on artificial diets that varied in sterol type. Sterols used were: cholesterol (Δ⁵) sitosterol (Δ⁵) stigmasterol (Δ⁵ʼ²²) spinasterol (Δ⁷ʼ²²) and lathosterol (Δ⁷); these are the most common plant sterols. For all species studied, none survived to the adult stage on stigmasterol, spinasterol or lathosterol. Performance on the cholesterol and sitosterol diets were similar for most species. This study suggests that grasshoppers, as a group, are extremely limited with respect to ...

*  Quantitative estimation of the stage of embryonic development in the locust, Schistocerca gregaria | Development
An understanding of the physiological and structural development of an embryo requires a knowledge of the precise state that development has reached. Without this knowledge it is not possible to compare findings from experiments performed on different embryos or to relate them to structural changes during development.. In previous work on Acridid embryos two methods have been used in estimating the stage of development. Some authors have defined embryonic stages by their age from the time of oviposition (Slifer, 1932; Roonwal, 1936, 1937; Hong, 1968), while others have described development in a series of arbitrarily chosen stages, which are based primarily on changes in the external morphology (Steele, 1941; Jhingran, 1947; Mathée, 1951; Shulov & Pener, 1959, 1963).. The eggs of Schistocerca gregaria are laid in pods of 30-90. Pods were collected and kept under constant conditions in order to investigate the development of the embryonic muscle (Tyrer, 1968, 1969).. ...

*  Data from: Microsatellite evolutionary rate and pattern in Schistocerca gregaria inferred from direct observation of germline...
Unravelling variation among taxonomic orders regarding the rate of evolution in microsatellites is crucial for evolutionary biology and population genetics research. The mean mutation rate of microsatellites tends to be lower in arthropods than in vertebrates, but data are scarce and mostly concern accumulation of mutations in model species. Based on parent-offspring segregations and a hierarchical Bayesian model, the mean rate of mutation in the orthopteran insect Schistocerca gregaria was estimated at 2.1e-4 per generation per untranscribed dinucleotide locus. This is close to vertebrate estimates and one order of magnitude higher than estimates from species of other arthropod orders, such as Drosophila melanogaster and Daphnia pulex. We also found evidence of a directional bias towards expansions even for long alleles and exceptionally large ranges of allele sizes. Finally, at transcribed microsatellites, the mean rate of mutation was half the rate found at untranscribed loci and the ...

*  G4563 Grasshopper Control in Missouri Forage Crops and Pastures | University of Missouri Extension
Grasshoppers usually lay eggs in uncultivated soil in areas such as ditch banks, field margins and roadsides, as well as pastures, alfalfa and clover fields. Two-striped and differential grasshoppers lay their eggs near the roots of bunch grasses or alfalfa crowns covered with debris. These sites are usually along field edges or roadsides. Some species lay their eggs in specific bed areas.. Most kinds of grasshoppers lay eggs during late summer or early fall in pods of 20 to 100 eggs. One female grasshopper may deposit 8 to 25 egg pods. Generally, the eggs pass the winter, but in some instances, eggs may hatch and the emerging nymphs overwinter. Eggs hatch from May to June and, as the food source becomes scarce, the nymphs move to nearby fields. In drought-stressed fields, border vegetation is less abundant or dried out, causing nymphs to move quickly and in higher numbers into crops. Once in the field, ...

*  Intra- and Interspecific Aggregation Responses of and and a Comparison of Their Pheromone Emissions
Gregarious nymphs of Schistocerca gregaria and Locusta migratoria migratorioides are often seen to march together in common bands in the field. In the present study, the intraspecific aggregation responses of nymphal and older stages of the two insects were compared with their interspecific responses. Unlike S. gregaria, L. m. migratorioides shows a lesser pattern of stage and sex differentiation in its aggregation pheromone biology. Thus, although fifth-instar nymphs did not respond significantly to the adult pheromone, adults responded significantly to the nymph pheromone. No cross-stage aggregative responses occur in S. gregaria. In the adults of S. gregaria, production of the pheromone is male-specific; in L. m. migratorioides both sexes induced a significant level of aggregation from conspecifics. Aggregation assays between corresponding stages of the two species showed stronger interaction between the nymphal stages than between the adults and account for the frequent occurrence of mixed ...

Goggy Davidowitz. Observant hikers in the Sonoran Desert soon notice grasshoppers jumping near their feet or flitting between bushes and cacti. These are among the most frequently encountered and easily observed of the Sonoran Desert insects in the late summer. Grasshoppers have a fairly simple body design. The rounded head capsule contains the compound eyes, chewing mouth parts, and the short thread-like antennae, which are always shorter than the body (hence the name short-horned grasshoppers, in contrast to another suborder, the katydids or long-horned grasshoppers). The middle thoracic segments and part of the abdomen are covered by a shield-like pronotum that extends from the first thoracic segment. The forewings are leathery and not used for flight. Instead they protect the delicate hind wings, which are folded accordion-like beneath the forewings until they are ...

*  NMSU Plant Clinic: Grasshoppers Feeding on Leaves and Flowers
Featured diagnosis: Grasshoppers. If you're a gardener, you're probably all too familiar with this annoying pest. Grasshoppers invade yards, gardens, and greenhouses, munching on tender foliage and flowers, leaving chewed and tattered plant tissue in their wake. Usually, the damage is relatively inconsequential; however when the insect is present in high numbers, damage can be significant - small seedlings may be completely eaten to the ground! Pesticides are usually not recommended for home gardeners as they only affect the grasshoppers they contact and do not protect from new invaders. These materials may also have an unintended negative effect on beneficial insects. Home gardeners who wish to protect their plants should cover them with insect netting until the grasshoppers are gone ...

*  Respiratory dynamics of discontinuous gas exchange in the tracheal system of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria | Journal...
The pumping movements of an insect's abdomen lead to volume changes of the tracheal system, which in turn lead to pressure fluctuations within the internal body (detected as intratracheal or haemolymph pressure changes) of the insect (Buck, 1962). In locusts, the pumping movement of the abdomen is generally thought to ventilate the tracheae and larger tracheal trunks (Wigglesworth, 1972), and both inspiration and expiration are active processes (Miller, 1964). In an actively ventilating orthopteran, the first four pairs of spiracles open during the inspiratory phase of abdominal ventilation, while the remaining pairs open during the expiratory phase (Weis-Fogh, 1967; Harrison, 1997), leading to an anterior to posterior (unidirectional) flow of air through the insect (Henderson et al., 1998). However, the path of this unidirectional flow of air is subject to variation, and occasionally any of the spiracles might serve for both inspiration and expiration (Steen, 1971). If there is a unidirectional ...
