The posterior location of the pellet in the orbital apex eliminated an anterior orbitotomy approach. A lateral approach could have been used yet it would have required an osteotomy extending along the lateral orbital wall that was posteriorly fragmented. This would have required enlarging the bony incision of a classic lateral orbitotomy and removing the sphenoid wing to the superior orbital fissure, as described by Goldberg et al.(5) This approach would have eliminated the need for a craniotomy; however, it was possible that this might not have provided enough access and exposure to safely extract the pellet. Presenting symptoms included pain, orbital mass, proptosis, decreased vision & decreased eye movements. 3 patients had bilateral orbital disease, while 4 had unilateral disease. 5 cases were extraconal, 1 was intraconal, & 1 was both intra & extraconal. 3 cases had lymphadenopathy, while 4 had extranodal disease, 3 of which had localized orbital disease. Diagnosis was confirmed by exam, orbital & systemic CT, & biopsy in all cases. Treatment included excision (3 cases); debulking (2 cases); IV & oral steroids (1 case); & chemoradiation, oral steroids, & debulking (1 case). The ability to perform an inclination change maximizes the maneuverability of an orbiting space vehicle. Most maneuvers utilize a combined plane change and orbital transfer to the new orbit. This costs more in terms of energy and fuel than an in-plane change of orbits. The amount of DV and fuel required for such an energyintensive inclination change exceeds the benefit of performing the maneuver. However, this paper demonstrates that a winged re-entry vehicle, based on the currently proposed X-37, has the necessary thrust to change planes and then perform an in-plane transfer to achieve a new orbit. Using SIMULINKâ and LABVIEWâ simulation tools, this research found that the use of the aerodynamic lift of a winged re-entry vehicle produced more than 12Ê» of inclination change with the minimal DV achievable.
