*  usmle: General Rules about Physician-Patient Relationships
There are three types of ovarian tumors that can produce large amounts of steroid hormones: 1.Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors originate from precursors of Sertoli and Leydig cells and usually produce male hormones, manifesting with masculinization or defeminization. 2.Fibroma-thecomas arise from stromal cells, are mostly composed of fibroblasts, and rarely manifest with endocrinologic signs. 3.Granulosa cell tumors develop from granulosa cells and may actively secrete estrogens. Precocious puberty appears if the patient is a preadolescent girl; adult women develop hyperplasia or carcinoma of the endometrium and fibrocystic change in the breast. Up to 20% to 25% of granulosa ...

*  Pleuropulmonary blastoma - Wikipedia
Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare cancer originating in the lung or pleural cavity. It occurs most often in infants and young children but also has been reported in adults. In a retrospective review of 204 children with lung tumors, pleuropulmonary blastoma and carcinoid tumor were the most common primary tumors (83% of the 204 children had secondary tumors spread from cancers elsewhere in the body). Pleuropulmonary blastoma is regarded as malignant. The male:female ratio is approximately one. Symptoms may include coughing, an upper respiratory tract infection, shortness of breath, and chest pain. These symptoms are very non-specific, and can be caused by other types of tumor in the lung or mediastinum more generally, and by other conditions. Imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI) may be used to determine the presence and precise location of a ...

Inhibin is a peptide hormone produced by ovarian granulosa cells and testicular Sertoli cells. Ovarian granulosa cell and other sex cord-stromal tumors usually exhibit positive immunohistochemical staining with antiinhibin antibodies, and this may be valuable in differentiating these neoplasms from histologic mimics. In the present study, we investigated the immunohistochemical staining of testicular sex cord-stromal tumors using antiinhibin. Immunostaining with CAM5.2, vimentin, S-100 protein, desmin, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) also was performed because few studies have investigated in detail the immunophenotype of testicular sex cord-stromal tumors. Fifteen of 16 Leydig ...

ISSN 1665-1146.. Introduction. The pleuropulmonary blastoma is a rare malignant lung neoplasm usually observed in children younger than 6 years old. There are 3 types of pleuropulmonary blastoma: I cystic, III solid, and II mixed. Its clinical and biological behavior is aggressive. Case report. A female patient, 7 months old who 3 months previous to admission presented respiratory symptoms treated as neumonia and spillings, without clinical or radiological improvement. She was admitted with respiratory difficulty, hypomobility of the right hemitorax, and absence of respiratory sounds; a CAT scan of the thorax showed a lump that occupied more than 90% of the right hemitorax, heterogenous, with predominance of solid components. A resection of the middle right lobe was carried-out; the histopathologic studied ...

*  Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma - Wikipedia
Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) is a rare histological form of cancer of connective tissue wherein the mesenchymally-derived malignant cells resemble the primitive developing skeletal muscle of the embryo. It is the most common soft tissue sarcoma occurring in children. ERMS is the more common of two major subtypes of rhabdomyosarcoma, the other being alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. It has been informally classified as a "small round blue cell tumor" because of the characteristic microscopic appearance of its cells after histological staining with hematoxylin and eosin. The prognosis for rhabdomyosarcoma has improved greatly in recent decades, with over 70% of patients surviving for five years after diagnosis. *  Testicular sex cord-stromal tumor in a boy with 2q37 deletion syndrome | BMC Medical Genomics | Full Text
This study provides novel insight into the genotype-phenotype correlations of the rare chromosomal disorder del2q37 syndrome. First, this case manifests typical clinical features of del2q37 syndrome, while the phenotypic presentation because of the 1p36 duplication was less evident except for intelligence disability [18]. This finding suggests that haploinsufficiency of the genes at 2q37, rather than the segmental duplications of 1p36 or 20p12, shows dominant effects on the phenotypic presentation. Specific gene functions of GPCPD1 and the duplication of 20p12 remain to be clarified, structural variations at 20p14.3, wherein this gene is located, were identified in healthy individuals of Korean ethnicity [19]. Therefore, the 20p14.3 duplication spanning the GPCPD1 locus was unlikely to alter the phenotype of del2q37 syndrome and to produce the carcinogenic condition. While the present case did not show profound phenotype of intellectual disability compared to other cases in the literature, we ...

*  Characterization of a new human embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma cell line, RMS-GR - UnissResearch
A human tumor cell line designated RMS-GR was established from an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. The monolayer cells were polygonal, round or spindle-shaped. The RMS-GR cell line became stable with a doubling time of 42 h. Tumorigenicity of the cells was confirmed by hetero-transplantion into nude mice. Electron microscopic images showed typical cytoplasmic inclusion of aggregated intermediate filaments and myofibril-like thin filaments. The expression of desmin, vimentin, actin and human myoglobin was recognized by cytofluorometric analyses, and a large fraction of CK-MM and small fractions of CK-BB and MCK-1 isoenzymes were found. Chromosomal analysis showed that the modal chromosome number was consistently near triploid with structural abnormalities mostly involving chromosomes 1, 3 and 8, and additional ...

*  Is activin-βc a tumour suppressor in the inhibin knockout mice?
Inhibins and activins are essential for normal reproductive and endocrine function. Previous literature showed that loss of INHA encoding for inhibin-α subunit in mice results in development of gonadal (sex-cord stromal) and adrenal tumourigenesis. However, a strong paradox has emerged regarding the function of INHA in human tumours primarily due to conflicting studies. A correlation has been found between the overexpression of activin-A by the tumours in the inhibin-deficient mice and severe cancer-associated cachexia, which has a profound impact on survival. Therefore, activin antagonism has been used to modulate the sex-cord stromal tumour growth rate both in vivo and in vitro. Recent work has shown that activin-C is an additional activin-A antagonist, despite being considered biologically redundant for several years. A preliminary study conducted in the inhibin-deficient mouse model, showed that overexpression of activin-βC has a beneficial effect, modulating sex-cord stromal tumours ...
