*  Nitrogen Oxides Emissions: Traffic Dramatically Underestimated as Major Polluter
Nitrogen oxide is toxic in higher concentrations and classified as hazardous air pollutant. In addition, it contributes to the development of ground-level ozone. Regulatory thresholds are meant to limit emissions. However, in Innsbruck, for example, the average level of nitrogen oxide is 36 times higher than the new emission regulation standard laid out in the Clean Air Act in the USA. Because of the high levels of nitrogen oxide along the motorways of the Inn valley and the Brenner pass, driving bans and speed limits pursuant to the Austrian Clean Air Protection Act (IG-L) have already been introduced. The aim of the current study is to determine the main polluters of nitrogen oxide emissions in more detail. The Tyrolean scientists' future goal is to use their setup to investigate the impact of the motorway in the Lower Inn valley, extend their measurements in Innsbruck to the winter months and study the impact of agricultural activities. ...

*  Synthesis and Pharmacological Evaluation of Nitrogen Oxide Releasing Prodrugs - The University of Arizona Campus Repository
The main goals of this research were to synthesize nitrogen oxide releasing diazeniumdiolates and their prodrugs and to evaluate their pharmacological effects. The different projects and their results are described below. i. Comparison of HNO and NO donating properties of cyclic amine diazeniumdiolates Diazeniumdiolates are an attractive class of donor compounds as they can be tuned to release NO or both NO and HNO depending upon the amine backbone. Isopropylamine (IPA/NO) and cyclohexylamine (CHA/NO) diazeniumdiolates are currently the only examples of primary amine based diazeniumdiolates. A series of structurally related cyclic amine based diazeniumdiolates were synthesized and characterized. An acetoxymethyl derivative was also synthesized to facilitate cellular uptake and to achieve higher HNO levels in cells. ii. Nitrogen oxide releasing diazeiumdiolate based adducts of N-des-methyl-tamoxifen Nitrogen oxide (NO/HNO) donating diazeniumdiolate adducts of ...

*  Patente US4400362 - Removal of nitrogen oxides from gas - Google Patentes
Gas containing nitrogen oxides is treated in two separate stages. In the first stage, the nitrogen oxides in the gas are reacted with sulfurous acid. The gaseous product of this reaction is reacted with an alkaline solution, typically caustic alkali. As a result of these treatments, the nitrogen oxides are converted into neutral salts.

*  Chelsea Thompson | CIRES
My current research is focused on the sources, chemistry, transport and air quality impacts of reactive nitrogen oxide compounds (NOy) and ozone in the troposphere. Reactive nitrogen oxide compounds include NO and NO2 (collectively termed NOx) that are primarily sourced from combustion, both anthropogenic and natural (e.g., wildfires), as well as HNO3, PAN, HONO, N2O5, and a variety of organic nitrates. NOx, in conjunction with volatile organic compounds, is the primary source of tropospheric ozone, a secondary air pollutant that is commonly an air quality concern for heavily-populated, urban areas. To study these compounds, I conduct airborne measurements of NO, NO2, NOy and O3 on board instrumented research aircraft (NOAA P-3 and NASA DC-8) with a chemiluminescence instrument built in our laboratory at NOAA.. Currently, I am involved in the on-going NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) Mission. This project aims to conduct global-scale measurements of a large suite of ...

*  High-temperature reduction of nitrogen oxides in oxy-fuel combustion
The possibility of high-temperature reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in oxy-fuel combustion is investigated. A detailed gas-phase model identifies the effect of temperature, stoichiometric ratio, residence time and composition of the oxidizer on NOx reduction. It is concluded that an efficient high-temperature reduction of NOx is achieved with high-purity oxygen, negligible amount of air ingress, presence of a sub-stoichiometric combustion zone, and relatively long residence time. The temperature should be high but decreasing along with the NOx concentration throughout the reaction zone. The influence of these parameters is discussed, also with regard to combustion efficiency, corrosion and ash handling.

*  Patent US5529484 - Apparatus and method for decreasing nitrogen oxide emissions from internal ... - Google Patents
Apparatus is disclosed herein for reducing engine nitrogen oxide emissions by mixing hydrogen prepared from a portion or all of engine fuel within a simple burner. The apparatus includes an insulated burner having an internal combustion chamber for receiving either a portion of or all the gaseous fuel or liquid fuel for mixture with air and subsequent ignition by a spark plug. The chamber is within a feed preheater assembly. A mixing chamber is included having a series of baffles against which injected air and fuel vapor impinge causing thorough and complete air/fuel blending into a mixture subsequently ignited and burned, and then discharged into the combustion chamber of the engine itself. The pre-heating assembly raises the temperature of the incoming air/fuel mixture via a heat exchanging process with post combusted gases from the combustion chamber. The apparatus improves operability and performs by conserving energy by insulating the total burner, placing the burner section within the ...

*  Selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia by nitrogen oxides in a model synthesis gas
Synthesis gas generated by the gasification of nitrogen-containing hydrocarbons will contain ammonia. This is a catalyst poison and elevated levels of nitrogen oxides (NOX) will be produced if the synthesis gas is combusted. This paper presents a study of the selective oxidation of ammonia in reducing environments. The concept is the same as in traditional selective catalytic reduction, where NOX are removed from flue gas by reaction with injected ammonia over a catalyst. Here, a new concept for the removal of ammonia is demonstrated by reaction with injected NOX over a catalyst. The experiments were carried out in a model synthesis gas consisting of CO, CO2, H-2, N-2 and NH3/NOX. The performance of two catalysts, V2O5/WO3/TiO2 and H-mordenite, were evaluated. On-site generation of NOX by nitric acid decomposition was also investigated and tested. The results show good conversion of ammonia under the conditions studied for ...

*  Studies of hydrocarbon-assisted selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides - DME as reductant and reaction mechanism over...
Increasing amounts of carbon dioxide are attaining worldwide growing attention as one probable cause for global warming. Together with the expected peak in oil production and an increasing oil demand, this results in a greater interest in more fuel effective lean burn engines (i.e. operation with excess oxygen). Nitrogen oxides are formed during combustion, and the excess oxygen obstructs NOx reduction in a conventional three-way catalyst. One concept for NOx reduction under lean conditions is hydrocarbon-assisted selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR). In this thesis, two aspects of HC-SCR are studied, namely DME as reducing agent and the reaction mechanism of propene-SCR over a Ag/Al2O3 catalyst. Dimethyl ether is an energy efficient and low CO2 emitting alternative fuel, which can be used in diesel engines. For NOx reduction, however, many HC-SCR catalyst materials show only moderate activity with DME under dry ...

*  Nitrogen Oxide - A Pleasant Poison! - Breatheology
The gas molecule nitrogen oxide (NO) that we know is activated through the nose also contributes to relaxation and to expand blood vessels, like carbon dioxide. Add to this an antibacterial function, which can help to improve local conditions in an irritated lung. To further in-crease the concentration of NO - and thus the dilation of blood ves-sels - humming sounds during nose breathing can advantageously be employed. This rather special kind of breathing is beneficial because the buzzing sound has been shown to increase the concentration of NO in the nasal cavity up to 15 times, since the air in the nose more readily mixes with NO-rich air from the sinuses.. Moreover, the simple pressure equalizing Valsalva Maneuver can help as it presses air from the lungs to all the cavities in the skull, and there are indeed a lot around the nose and forehead. During a strong cold or if you have swum under water with a blocked nose, you may have experience a marked pain ...

*  Disruption of gastric barrier function by luminal nitrosative stress: a potential chemical insult to the human gastro...
Objective: The human gastro-oesophageal junction is exposed to abundant amounts of luminal reactive nitrogen oxide species (RNOS) derived from the enterosalivary re-circulation of dietary nitrate. The aim of this study is to investigate the direct effects of luminal RNOS on the adjacent gastric barrier function using an ex vivo chamber model.. Methods: A chamber model in which the rat gastric mucosal membrane was mounted between the two halves of a chamber was designed to simulate the microenvironment of the lumen and the adjacent mucosa of the gastro-oesophageal junction. On the mucosal side of the chamber, RNOS were generated by the acidification of physiological concentrations of sodium nitrite. The epithelial barrier function was evaluated by electrophysiological transmembrane resistance, and membrane permeability with [3H]mannitol flux. The expression of occludin was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting. Dinitrosyl dithiolato iron complex (DNIC) was also measured by ...
