Abstract Standard reagents and procedures employed in the Bozicevich Trichinella bentonite flocculation test (BFT) were used, the bentonite particles being coated with the sonicated antigen of Entamoeba histolytica strain DKB. Serum from 84 of 90 persons (93%) with extraintestinal amebiasis were reactive in the BFT, whereas 43 of 50 serum samples (86%) from persons with symptomatic intestinal disease were positive. None of 24 serum samples from asymptomatic carriers was positive, nor was any of 279 specimens obtained from persons with a variety of gastrointestinal, parasitic, bacterial, or virus diseases. The BFT showed good positive-negative agreement (93%) with the indirect hemagglutination test on tests of 121 selected serum samples. The BFT became nonreactive earlier than did indirect hemagglutination in tests on serum from two of five follow-up cases of ...
*  The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene | The Detection of Antibodies to Infections with the Nematode, Toxocara...
Discussion and Summary The results of these experiments, in general, reveal that specific antibodies are produced following active infection or artificial immunization with Toxocara canis. These antibodies are detectable in a reproducible manner by the flocculation, and in a less consistent manner by the complement fixation and the precipitin tests, with the use of an acid-soluble protein fraction of adult Toxocara worms as the source of antigen. Similar results were obtained with the precipitin test in which crude extracts of the adult worms were used as antigen. Indirect additional evidence in favor of a serological response to this infection was obtained by observing a marked hypergammaglobulinemia in animals infected with Toxocara. Experiments in rabbits indicated that the flocculation test with a purified antigen can detect antibodies at a relatively early date after exposure. A ...

Summary Liver function study was carried out on 26 cases of symptomless carriers, and 28 cases of intestinal amebiasis with symptoms. High serum globulin values were the only evidence of hepatic dysfunction in 9 cases (34.6 per cent) of symptomless carriers; other liver function tests were normal. High serum globulin, abnormal cephalin cholesterol flocculation and thymol flocculation tests were observed in 15 cases (53.6 per cent), 6 cases (21.4 per cent) and 3 cases (10.7 per cent) respectively, in cases having symptoms.

*  Soil Science Society of America Journal Abstract - Flocculation of Clays and Soils by Organic Compounds1 | Digital Library
The effectiveness of 15 substituted benzene ring compounds in flocculating , 2µ Gila clay was evaluated by measuring flocculation percentage and by observation after reaction in water suspension. In general the flocculation percentages were in the order: calcareous clays , noncalcareous, calcium-saturated clays , noncalcareous sodium-saturated clays. Effectiveness of organic compounds on carbonate containing clays increases sharply as the pH value drops to about 6.0. In carbonate-free systems the effect of decreasing pH is not evident until the pH drops to , 4, and is not consistent. Calcium appears necessary for flocculation in all sodium, calcium-clay systems studied. Interlayer absorption does not insure flocculation, and naturally existing organic matter did not increase flocculation by the organic compounds tested. The ...

*  "Studies on flocculation of fine mineral tailings using novel polyacryl" by Simin Khatibi
'One of the important features in managing or treating sulfide fine tailings is separating solids from liquid by settling test. This thesis presents results of studied conducted on flocculation of Kaolin suspensions (a model tailings) and sulfide mineral tailings. Two polymers (PAM and Al-PAM) were tested as flocculants. The zeta potential value of slurries was measured by Nano Zetasizer device. Al-PAM was found to be more effective for flocculation of kaolinite samples and also sulfide samples while PAM with used concentration was not. This study represents the power of flocculation as a possible solution to deal with industrial tailings'--Abstract, page iii.

*  Flocculation - wikidoc
Flocculants, or flocculating agents, are chemicals that promote flocculation by causing colloids and other suspended particles in liquids to aggregate, forming a floc. Flocculants are used in water treatment processes to improve the sedimentation or filterability of small particles. For example, a flocculant may be used in swimming pool or drinking water filtration to aid removal of microscopic particles which would otherwise cause the water to be cloudy and which would be difficult or impossible to remove by filtration alone. Many flocculants are multivalent cations such as aluminium, iron, calcium or magnesium. These positively charged molecules interact with negatively charged particles and molecules to reduce the barriers to aggregation. In addition, many of these chemicals, under appropriate pH and other conditions, react with water to form insoluble hydroxides which, upon precipitating, link together to form long chains or meshes, physically trapping small particles ...
*  Flocculation and colloidal crystallization of aqueous nanosized oxide dispersions as function of pH and electrolyte
Application properties and separation behaviour of dispersions are determined by the degree of dispersion/agglomeration or even flocculation of individual particles. Depending on the desired dispersion properties or of the goal of separation (exhaustive separation as possible, deliquoring, classification) the desirable dispersion state can vary between colloidal stable and highly flocculated. The STEP-Technology (measurement of Space and Time resolved Extinction Profiles) allows for detailed in-situ visualization of the separation process with information on separation velocity (distribution), packing density in the sediment and residual turbidity at earth gravity or in centrifugal field. The evolution and shape of transmission profiles (fingerprints) reveals easily recognizable images of the state of dispersion.

*  Effects of flocculation on retrovirus processing, delivery and transduction - OpenThesis
The efficiency of retrovirus-mediated gene transfer can be dramatically enhanced by inducing flocculation of viruses. Addition of oppositely charged polymers to virus stocks resulted in the formation of virus-polymer complexes. The complexes specifically incorporated virus particles and only few other proteins, were not cytotoxic, did not reduce the stability of the viruses, and were large enough to sediment, delivering the viruses to the cells more rapidly than by simple diffusion. Increases in the rate of transport of viruses correlated with increases in the rate of transduction, as the polymers did not affect the efficiency of post-binding steps of transduction. The formation of virus-polymer complexes also permitted concentrating viruses and purifying the stocks from inhibitors of transduction. Pelleting of the complexes followed by resuspension of the pellet in a reduced volume of fresh cell culture medium resulted in substantial enhancement of transduction. Purified ...

Liquid to be treated flows into a combined sedimentation and thickening tank. The upper part of this tank is a sedimentation zone in which the liquid passes through parallel flow paths between downwardly inclined separator plates below which the solids fall to the bottom of the tank into the thickening zone whereat the solids are stirred and removed by a suitable stirring and scraping device. The liquids flowing with the solids through the parallel paths are removed at the end of said paths and delivered directly to the top of the sedimentation zone thus leaving the thickening zone essentially flow-free. Flocculants may be added to the water to be treated in a separate flocculation compartment arranged upstream from the sedimentation compartment. A separate destabilization compartment may be provided upstream from the flocculation compartment. A square sedimentation zone may merge smoothly into a circular thickening zone. The thickening zone ...
