*  Guinea Worm and Sudan: Center Experts Featured in The Lancet
For all the SGWEP's successes so far, dracunculiasis cannot be eradicated from Sudan until Sudan's civil war is ended. (With an incubation period of two weeks or less, and a vaccine, it may be possible to eradicate polio from Sudan before the war ends, but it will be hard to prove it. Smallpox was eradicated during Sudan's brief decade of peace.) We estimate that it will take 3-5 years to completely eradicate dracunculiasis in Sudan once the war is settled. Until then, the actual and potential costs to Sudan, its neighbors, and supporters of the eradication campaign will be substantial. They include the costs (now about US$2 million per year) to maintain the program in Sudan; costs of maintaining surveillance to detect cases exported from southern Sudan to northern Sudan and to neighboring countries; costs if an undetected case re-establishes transmission in ...

*  UNHCR alarmed by health situation of Sudanese refugees in South Sudan | United Nations Radio
There is growing concern among aid agencies about the health of about 170,000 Sudanese refugees in camps and informal settlements in South Sudan.. The UN Refugee agency (UNHCR) says the refugees are living in overcrowded conditions without clean water and basic sanitation services which cause respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea and malaria.. Children in the camps are also severely malnourished as their mothers or other care givers are often too sick and weak to look after them properly.. UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards says over 200 community health promoters have been signed up to assist in educating the refugees on good hygiene practices.. "UNHCR and its partners have this month launched an extensive health and hygiene outreach programme. We are putting particular emphasis on good basic hygiene trying to impress upon refugees the importance of fundamentals like hand-washing, collecting water in clean buckets and jerry-cans and not defecating in the open. *  United States aid to Sudan - Wikipedia
United States aid to Sudan has three key objectives: a definitive end to conflict, gross human rights abuses, and genocide in Darfur; implementation of the north-south Comprehensive Peace Agreement that results in a peaceful post-2011 Sudan, or an orderly path toward two separate and viable states at peace with each other; and ensuring that Sudan does not provide a safe haven for international terrorist. Sudan has experienced two civil wars since 1955, the second of which lasted 22 years. During this time, the U.S. was the largest provider of foreign aid to Sudan, largely focused on humanitarian aid through the U.S. Agency for International Development. Sudan is listed as the U.S. government's highest priority in Africa due to "its importance for counter-terrorism and regional stability, as well as the magnitude of human rights and humanitarian abuses" U.S. foreign aid to Sudan has begun to ...

*  Empower the Women of the World's Youngest Nation - South Sudan - Woman News Network (WNN)
Hilde Johnson - Huffington Post - Wednesday, 13 March 2013 (originally published 07 Mar). In the world's newest nation, South Sudan, women and girls are confronted with the formidable challenges of daily life: child marriage, gender-based violence and illiteracy. Tens of thousands of girls, up to 40 percent of the population, are forced to become child brides, denying them their right to education. The child and teenage pregnancies that follow marriage put these girls at grave risk. South Sudan is one of the most dangerous places for any girl or woman to give birth; it has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.. The UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) is, together with partners, working to reverse the practice of child marriage and prevent gender based violence. Through a number of approaches and initiatives, we are mobilizing communities, NGOs, and the Government as change agents in this effort.. The UN has also focused on ...

*  Why Equatoria supports an Interim Federal Government & a Federal Constitution | SouthSudanNation.com
BY: Col. (Rtd). Wani Tombe Lako Lokitari, RSS, MAR/29/29/2014, SSN;. Whether people like it or not, Equatoria is always the political game-changer in the politics of South Sudan (SS). Those who argue that Equatoria must become an innocent and unconcerned spectator while history and the political roadmap of SS are being redone, are gravely mistaken. Others must not confuse the protection of their constitutional posts, with commensurate financial and other privileges, with the selfless struggle for the comprehensive interests of the downtrodden and poverty ridden peoples of SS.. There are some Equatorians holding constitutional posts and other menial constitutional jobs in the presidency, the states, and other ministries in Juba, who think that because they are happy as individuals and families, and therefore by implication, the rest of Equatoria are also happy. These detached Equatorian constitutional and other post holders in the Sovereign Republic of South Sudan (SRSS) are ...

*  Emergency Livelihood Kits in South Sudan : FAO in Emergencies
Jul 2014 Dr. Sue Lautze, FAO Representative in South Sudan and the UN's Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator explains the four types of emergency livelihood kit that FAO is distributing to communities affected by the crisis in South Sudan that begun with the outbreak of conflict in December 2013.. The kits contain portable, essential inputs for the four different livelihood systems in the conflict affected states and include vegetable seeds, crop seeds and tools, animal health equipment and fishing inputs. The kits have been reaching affected communities by truck, airlift and airdrop, and will enable farmers to plant and harvest staple crops and nutritious vegetables, fisherfolk to catch fish and feed their families and herders to protect the health of their livestock as they migrate between grazing areas.. As part of the UN's Crisis Response Plan for 2014, FAO is appealing for USD 108 million to support 3.3 million people in South Sudan. If adequately funded, ...
*  South Sudan Livestock Crisis - August 2015 : FAO in Emergencies
Aug 2015. The livestock crisis continues to deepen and spread in South Sudan. Last December, FAO warned of a "silent emergency" as the ongoing conflict and instability undermined the livelihoods of the country's agropastoral communities. Today, continued massive displacement and recurrent insecurity, disrupted markets, reduced trade, soaring food prices and a widespread economic downturn have been detrimental for livestock owners.. Intensive and abnormal migrations due to insecurity have seriously depleted the health conditions for animal health throughout the country. It will take years for these communities - representing an estimated 65 percent of South Sudan's population - to rebuild and strengthen their herds. By December 2014, when FAO first issued a Livestock Alert for South Sudan, the dynamics for the deteriorating livestock situation had already been set into motion. The conflict divided the country into affected and less affected areas, the ...

*  Risk factors for trachomatous trichiasis in children: Cross-sectional household surveys in Southern Sudan | RTI
We have previously documented blinding trachoma to be a serious public health problem in Southern Sudan, with an unusually high prevalence of trachomatous trichiasis (TT) among children. We aimed to investigate risk factors for TT in children in Southern Sudan. Cross-sectional surveys were undertaken in 11 districts between 2001 and 2006, and eligible participants were examined for trachoma signs. Risk factors were assessed through interviews and observations. Using logistic regression, associations between TT in children and potential risk factors were investigated.
*  Association of lipoprotein lipase gene with coronary heart disease in Sudanese population
Cardiovascular disease is stabilizing in high-income countries and has continued to rise in low-to-middle-income countries. Association of lipid profile with lipoprotein lipase gene was studied in case and control subject. The family history, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking and alcohol consumption were the most risk factors for early-onset of coronary heart disease (CHD). Sudanese patients had significantly (P , 0.05) lower TC and LDL-C levels compared to controls. Allele frequency of LPL D9N, N291S and S447X carrier genotype was 4.2%, 30.7% and 7.1%, respectively. We conclude that lipoprotein lipase polymorphism was not associated with the incidence of CHD in Sudan. ª 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Ministry of Health, Saudi ...
