Go to Huntley 158 One of 10 Illinois Districts Piloting Competency-Based Education.
Huntley 158 is one of 10 Illinois school districts selected to participate in the first cohort of Illinois' Competency-Based High School Graduation Requirements Pilot Program. The program is targeted to spur innovation among school districts to develop competency-based learning systems.. Each school district chosen to participate in the pilot will create a competency-based learning and credit system of the district's design. In competency-based learning, educators assess and advance students based on demonstrated mastery of specific skills, abilities, and knowledge, rather than on time in the classroom.. Competency-based learning allows for a potentially more relevant and personalized learning experience for students, in addition to deeper integration of technology and better utilization of teacher talent.. "The 10 school districts participating in the first cohort of the Competency-Based High School Graduation Requirements Pilot are opening new doors for students and educators," said State ...http://www.district158.org/blog/2017/04/06/huntley-158-one-of-10-districts-piloting-competency-based-education/

Inter-rater reliability calibration program: critical components for competency-based education | Distance-Educator.com
Measurement accuracy and reliability are important components of competency-based education (CBE). The ability to reliably assess student performance consistently over a period of time is crucial in these programs. For CBE programs which require multiple faculty or rater evaluations due to large student enrollments, it is expected that the faculty or raters score the student responses similarly. The reliability of ratings is critical for CBE programs because the integrity of the program rests on students demonstrating the specific competencies within the curriculum. Due to Western Governors University (WGU) large student enrollments, it employs several hundred evaluators to rate students performance assessments. WGU developed a program to assist their Evaluation Department in training their evaluators to score students assessments similarly. By using this program, WGU is able to maintain high inter-rater reliability rates within their evaluators and they are able to calibrate the ratings of ...http://distance-educator.com/inter-rater-reliability-calibration-program-critical-components-for-competency-based-education/

Purpose The use of anthropomorphic detail phantoms in simulation-based medical education has rapidly increased in the past few decades, aimed at improving operator confidence and patient outcomes. However, further adaptation of simulation-based procedural instruction is often cost-prohibitive and provides uncertain clinical benefit. We describe the integration of a novel, low-cost, durable lumbar spine phantom and formal educational curriculum for performing lumbar punctures (LP) with the aim to increase operator efficiency and confidence. Materials & Methods Following IRB approval, 6 PGY-2 residents were enrolled in an educational curriculum including 2 formal didactic lectures, an instructional video, and 20 simulated fluoroscopically-guided lumbar punctures performed on a novel phantom created for the purposes of this study. Data from 114 lumbar punctures performed by the six enrolled residents were compared with retrospective data from 514 LP's performed by 17 residents who underwent no ...http://theassr.org/abstract/simulation-based-educational-curriculum-for-lumbar-puncture-to-improve-operator-confidence-and-efficiency/

Prior Learning Assessment & Competency-Based Education | EDUCAUSE
What can you do with what you know?". Competency-based education (CBE) recognizes that learning can happen in many different ways; CBE rewards the demonstration of competency rather than the time spent learning. All students bring a variety of knowledge and skills developed over their lifetime of experience-whether they are 18, 40, or 72-and CBE programs aim to recognize when prior learning aligns with the competencies required for a degree.. Prior Learning Assessment, or PLA for short, may not be widely practiced but it has a rich tradition in higher education. Transferring course credit from one institution to another, earning credit by exams, including the Advanced Placement test, and PLA are common methods for giving academic credit for the college-level learning students bring with them.. Several colleges that are developing competency-based education programs as part of the Breakthrough Models Incubator are leveraging their own institution's strengths in PLA. This study has shown that both colleagues and patients rate consultant psychiatrists highly, and that there is little variation in ratings of psychiatrists by either colleagues or patients between psychiatrists working in different subspecialties. High feedback rating scores from staff and patients are not a new finding. With regard to psychiatrists, the original pilot of the ACP 3603 yielded similar findings.. Multisource feedback tools in general obtain results from colleagues and patients that are highly skewed towards favourable assessments of performance of doctors' practising in a range of specialties.4 This study obtained multisource feedback on over 1000 practising doctors from a range of specialties including acute hospital care, mental health and primary care organisations, however, differences in rating scores achieved by doctors working in different specialties were not reported.
