Noninvasive transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder can have two distinct morphologies suggesting they contain different genetic alterations. Papillary transitional cell carcinomas (Ta tumors) are often multifocal and only occasionally progress, whereas flat tumors (carcinomas in situ, CIS), frequently progress to invasive disease. We examined 216 bladder tumors of various stages and histopathologies for two genetic alterations previously described to be of importance in bladder tumorigenesis. Loss of heterozygosity of chromosome 9 was observed in 24 of 70 (34%) Ta tumors but was present in only 3 of 24 (12%) CIS and dysplasia lesions (P = 0.04). In contrast, only 1 of 36 (3%) Ta tumors contained a p53 gene mutation compared to 15 of 23 (65%) CIS and dysplasias (P , 0.001), a frequency ...

A nine-year-old chemically neutered male hovawart was referred due to dysuria, stranguria, haematuria and inappetence. Initial examinations suggested a transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder with pulmonary metastases and ureteral ectopia. To confirm the diagnosis and rule out possible ureteral ectopia, cystoscopy was performed. Transitional cell carcinoma was confirmed, and a urethral foreign body was revealed. After successful removal, the foreign body turned out to be a 17-cm long piece of a urinary catheter. The dog's clinical signs ceased completely a few days after extraction of the foreign object and palliative therapy with meloxicam. Approximately four weeks later its condition deteriorated and the owner elected euthanasia. ...

We report the development of a clonogenic assay for progenitor cells in transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Colony growth has been demonstrated from cells obtained both from surgical biopsies and from bladder barbotages. Electron microscopic and karyotypic evidence supports the contention that these progenitors represent a part of the population maintaining the tumor in vivo.. Colony growth occurred in 9 of 11 surgical biopsy samples and in 6 of 6 bladder barbotage samples. Plating efficiency ranged up to 0.7%, and colony size was in some instances greater than 1000 cells.. The assay appears potentially useful for analysis of the biology of human transitional cell carcinoma.. ...

OBJECTIVE:. PATIENTS AND METHODS:. PET was employed in 44 separate examinations involving 29 patients (24 men and five women with a median age of 68 years [mean 66, range 47-78]) with localized or metastatic transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. In four patients PET examinations were performed prior to the commencement of chemotherapy, and after one course and after three courses.. RESULTS:. The diagnostic accuracy of PET was poor. The technique did not monitor the therapeutic effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, producing results that correlated with therapy outcome. PET identified those patients who responded less successfully to therapy.. CONCLUSION:. PET with ...

*  Transitional Cell Cancer (Pelvis and Ureter)
The kidneys are a "matched" pair of organs found on either side of your backbone. The kidneys of an adult are about 5 inches long and 3 inches wide and are shaped like a kidney bean. Inside each kidney are tiny tubules that clean your blood, taking out waste products and making urine. The urine made by the kidneys passes through the ureter into the bladder where it is held until it is passed from your body. The renal pelvis is the part of the kidney that collects urine and drains it to the ureters. The cells that line the renal pelvis and ureters are called transitional cells, and it is these cells that are affected in TCC. If you have a more common type of kidney cancer called renal cell cancer, see the patient information statement on renal cell cancer ...
