*  IJERPH | Free Full-Text | Psychological Distress, Related Work Attendance, and Productivity Loss in Small-to-Medium Enterprise...
Owner/managers of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) are an under-researched population in terms of psychological distress and the associated health and economic consequences. Using baseline data from the evaluation of the Business in Mind program, a mental health promotion intervention amongst SME owner/managers, this study investigated: (i) prevalence of high/very high psychological distress, past-month sickness absenteeism and presenteeism days in SME owner/managers; (ii) associated, self-reported lost productivity; and (iii) associations between work, non-work and business-specific factors and work attendance behaviours. In our sample of 217 SME owner/managers 36.8% reported high/very high psychological distress. Of this group 38.7% reported past-month absenteeism, 82.5% reported past-month presenteeism, and those reporting presenteeism were 50% less productive as than usual. *  3 Sources Where Your Small Business Can Get A Loan Today - Yes, Even Your Small Business - Small Business Trends
Now, when we talk about small business loans, we mean just that - small business loans. We are not talking about a $1 million loan to purchase some commercial real estate or $500,000 to buy some investment property. We are not talking about a $3 million credit line just to show capital on a balance sheet. And, we are not talking about a $250,000 equipment loan for a regional construction company.. We are talking about true small business credit - loans under $150,000. Capital amounts that the 22 million small businesses in this country could use at some point in time for working capital, to renovate their location, purchase inventory, marketing, meeting payroll, developing new products or to simply have the capital on hand to acquire and satisfy customers (what business is really about).. But, we have heard ad nauseam that banks are just not lending to small businesses - claiming there is ...

*  U.S. GAO - International Trade: Experts' Advice for Small Businesses Seeking Foreign Patents
Small businesses, which are important to the U.S. economy for their roles in job creation and technological development, must be able to protect and profit from their innovations. One way to protect their innovations on a global basis is to obtain U.S. and foreign patents. These businesses, however, face numerous impediments when trying to patent their goods or processes abroad. These impediments, which GAO identified in a July 2002 report, include high costs, limited resources, and limited knowledge among small businesses about foreign patent laws and systems. Because of concern that small businesses, particularly high technology firms, were not obtaining patent protection abroad and thus were losing potential sales in foreign markets, GAO was asked to (1) identify the factors that patent law experts believe small businesses should consider as they decide whether to seek patent protection abroad and provide information on ...

*  U.S. GAO - Department of Energy's Procurement Practices as They Affect Small Business
In response to a congressional inquiry, a review was conducted of the Department of Energy's (DOE) procurement practices as they affect small business. DOE data showed that 10.3 percent of the former Energy Research and Development Administration's (ERDA) fiscal year 1977 obligations was for prime contracts with small business firms. The review indicated that the 10.3 percent included subcontracts let to small business firms by ERDA prime contractors. Accounting records show that 2.6 percent of the ERDA 1977 obligations was for prime contracts with small business firms. DOE officials said that this concentration was largely due to DOE and ERDA missions and cost-sharing targets for large pilot and demonstration plants. Including subcontractor data in statistics representing prime contracts can be misleading unless the amount included is clearly disclosed. The Secretary of Energy should take steps to ensure that the small ...

*  Spencer Benefits Reports - January 3, 2014 | Wolters Kluwer Law & Business News Center
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued two Q&As on enrollment in the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) Marketplace. The CMS states that employers will not need to meet the minimum participation requirement upon renewal for renewals in federally-facilitated SHOPs (FF-SHOPs) that occur from November 15 to December 15. This is because the CMS believes that it would be unduly burdensome to "non-renew" coverage under the exception to guaranteed renewability for failure to meet minimum participation rates only to re-enroll employers under guaranteed availability during that period. Under guaranteed availability requirements, employers must be allowed to purchase coverage from November 15 to December 15, even if they cannot meet minimum participation requirements, the CMS explained. For FF-SHOPs, minimum participation is generally set at 70 percent…. (Read Intelliconnect) ». ...

*  U.S. GAO - Small Business Administration: SBA Followed Appropriate Policies and Procedures for September 11 Disaster Loan...
The Small Business Administration (SBA) played a key role in assisting small businesses affected by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by providing over $1 billion in disaster loans to businesses that sustained physical damage or economic injury. Small businesses in the immediate areas of the attacks and others nationwide that suffered related economic injury were eligible to apply for disaster loans. SBA declined or withdrew about half of these loan applications. SBA's disaster loans are direct federal government loans provided at a subsidized interest rate. In response to concerns that more small businesses impacted by September 11 could have benefited from SBA's disaster loans, GAO conducted a review of its Disaster Loan Program. Specifically, GAO addressed the following questions: (1) Are the disaster program policies consistent with the law and the overall mission of SBA's Disaster Loan Program? (2) What were ...
