*  Eating problems and their risk factors : A 7-year longitudinal study of a population sample of Norwegian adolescent girls.
The longitudinal stability of eating problems and their relationships to risk factors were investigated in a representative population sample of 623 Norwegian girls aged 13-14 followed over 7 years (3 time points). Three eating problem symptoms were measured: Restriction, Bulimia-food preoccupation, and Diet, all taken from the 12-item Eating Attitudes Test. The aim of the study was to investigate the stability of these eating problem symptoms both as separate components (as opposed to total symptom load) as well as from a syndrome perspective. Over 7 years, dieting behavior showed the highest correlational stability (0.32). Regarding stable eating problem syndromes, at all 3 time points, 1 group of girls with generalized eating problems was found, characterized by simultaneously pronounced bulimic tendencies and dieting. However, we did not establish individual stability across 7 years for ...

Eating disorders are complex conditions that can arise from a variety of potential causes. Factors that may contribute to eating disorders include both risk factors and correlates that may contribute to eating disorders.. Risk Factors. Risk factors predate the emergence of the eating pathology and predict the emergence of clinically significant eating disorders. Risk factors do not necessarily cause eating disorders, but they can be contributing factors in the development of an eating disorder. Some risk factors can predict the onset of any eating disorder whereas others are specific to the onset of a particular disorder.. Risk Factors for Any/All Eating Disorders: Body dissatisfaction, negative affect, thin-ideal internalization, dieting, family social support deficits. *  Eating Disorders in Men Ignored · Guardian Liberty Voice
Men with an eating disorder are not getting the help they need. Symptoms in young men are being ignored because of a perception that eating disorders are a "women's illness.". Men are under-diagnosed and under-treated for eating disorders, despite making up about 25 percent of cases, a recent United Kingdom study suggests. University of Oxford and University of Glasgow researchers interviewed 39 people aged 16 to 25, including 10 men, about their personal experiences with the diagnosis, treatment and support for eating disorders. They found that young men with eating disorders were undertreated. Partly, this is because the men themselves were unaware that their symptoms, such as purging, not eating for days, over-exercising, using steroids, obsessively counting calories or even binge eating, indicated a possible eating disorder, according to the interviews. They may be aware ...

*  Brain Imaging Studies Reveal Neurobiology of Eating Disorders - Healthcanal.com : Healthcanal.com
A major reason contributing to the difficulty in developing new treatments for these disorders is our limited understanding of how brain function may contribute to eating disorder symptoms," said Walter H. Kaye, MD, professor of psychiatry and director of the Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Program at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.. In recent, published papers, Kaye and colleagues report the situation is changing. Advanced brain imaging technologies, supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, are beginning to be used to study and improve eating disorder treatments. Indeed, with funding from the Global Foundation for Eating Disorders (GFED), a New York City-based group that promotes eating disorder (ED) research and improved treatments, the UC San Diego Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research has launched a new initiative to create more ...

*  Women with eating problems: a community survey. - Department of Psychiatry
A survey was conducted of the eating habits and attitudes of a sample of young adult women. Each woman was asked whether she considered herself to have an eating problem. The sample comprised 369 attenders at a family planning clinic. Self-report assessment procedures were used, including the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Eating problems were reported by 20.6 per cent of the sample. Factors which strongly discriminated between those with an eating problem and the remainder were binge eating and a high score on the EAT. Other important factors were laxative use and high levels of psychological morbidity. Self-induced vomiting was only weakly associated with reporting an eating problem, and past and present weight were unrelated to such reports.

Facts About Eating Disorders Each year millions of people in the United States are affected by serious and sometimes life-threatening eating disorders. More than 90 percent of those afflicted are adolescent and young adult women. It is suggested that the reason women in this age group are particularly vulnerable to eating disorders is because of their tendency to go on strict diets to achieve an "ideal" figure. Researchers have found that such stringent dieting can play a key role in triggering eating disorders.. The consequences of eating disorders can be severe - 5 percent to 20 percent of cases of anorexia nervosa leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, other medical complications, or suicide.. Increasing awareness of the dangers of eating disorders - sparked by medical studies and extensive media coverage of the illness - has led many people to seek help. Nevertheless, some people with ...

*  Infant growth in the context of maternal eating disorders and maternal depression: a comparative study. - Oxford Neuroscience
There is evidence of growth faltering in infants of mothers with eating disorders. The aim of the current study was to examine whether this is a specific relationship. Thus, the infants of mothers with eating disorders were compared with infants of mothers with post-natal depression and a large comparison group. This study also aimed to explore possible mechanisms whereby growth disturbance comes about. It was found that the infants of mothers with eating disorders were smaller, both in terms of weight for length and weight for age, than either comparison group infants or infants of mothers with post-natal depression. There was little evidence, however, that mothers with eating disorders preferred smaller children or were dissatisfied with their children's shape or that they misperceived their children's size. On the contrary these mothers seemed highly sensitive to their children's shape and, compared with the other two groups, were more ...

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine how alcohol intake changes during and after transdiagnostic cognitive behaviour therapy for eating disorders (CBT-E). Additionally, the paper considers the relationship between alcohol consumption, eating disorder diagnosis and current major depressive episode at the time of first assessment. Method: One hundred and forty nine outpatients with an eating disorder (body mass index over 17.5) were divided into high or low alcohol intake groups (HIG and LIG) according to their intake at pre-treatment assessment. Their alcohol intake and eating disorder psychopathology were examined over the course of treatment and follow-up. Results: There was no difference between the groups on response of the eating disorder to treatment. The HIG significantly reduced their alcohol intake following treatment whilst the intake of the LIG remained stable over the course of treatment and follow-up. ...

*  Ohio expert says eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice
As part of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, experts across Ohio have been spreading the word about the dangers of eating disorders and how they can threaten a person's overall well-being.. Most women worry about how they look before they walk out the door each day, but for thousands of Ohio women, a distorted body image actually is a serious medical problem. Dr. Lori Mitan, director of the Eating Disorder Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, says these conditions are not a choice, but rather a mental illness often tied to other issues, such as depression or anxiety.. "One of the themes that runs through all of the eating disorders is this sense of fear or guilt around eating and body shape and body weight," Mitan said. "Their body image is so tied to how they feel about their weight.". Without early intervention, Mitan says, an eating disorder can have devastating and sometimes ...
