Drinking water quality in the United States - Wikipedia
Drinking water quality in the United States is generally good. In 2016, over 90 percent of the nation's community water systems were in compliance with all more-than-90 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. Most of the systems that are out of compliance are small systems in rural areas and small towns, partly because most public water systems are small ones. Drinking water quality in the U.S. is regulated by state and federal laws and codes, which set Maximum Contaminant Levels for some pollutants and naturally occurring constituents, determine various operational requirements, require public notification for violation of standards, provide guidance to state primacy agencies, and require utilities to publish consumer confidence reports. Historically, up through 1914, drinking water quality in the country was managed at the state and local level. After that, interstate waters were protected using United States Public Health Service (USPHS) standards. Ultimately the USPHS standards ...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinking_water_quality_in_the_United_States
Metals Archives - Intravenous Disodium Edetate ('chelation')
Edited by Robban Sica, MD. Endorsed in 2004 by the American Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology, the American Association of Environmental Medicine, and the International College of Integrative Medicine.. Standard of Care Guidelines for HM toxicity. Living in an industrialized society exposes all inhabitants to metals in the environment. Some minerals are toxic to life in all but the tiniest of amounts, including lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, and aluminum. The increasing rates of cancer, vascular disease, dementia, and other diseases are directly related to the increase of toxic metals and other chemicals in our environment, as chronic, even low-grade, environmental exposures raise the body burden.. With the industrialization of the world, the environmental amounts of toxic metals have markedly increased. Lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium and other toxic metals have been known to have adverse biological effects on humans since ancient times. Over the years, the ...http://chelation.me/category/uncategorized/metals/
Minerals | Free Full-Text | Primary Phases and Natural Weathering of Smelting Slag at an Abandoned Mine Site in Southwest...
Artisanal metallurgical slag produced more than 50 years ago at a mine site in southwest Japan is rich in toxic metals and metalloids. Some of the slag remains on a waste dump and could contaminate the surrounding area through the dissolution of heavy metals and metalloids during weathering. To assess this risk, this study has investigated the behavior of the toxic elements in the smelting slag during weathering. Most of the potentially toxic elements are contained in willemite and/or matte drops. Maximum metal and metalloid concentrations in the slag are 28.1 wt % Fe, 22.7 wt % Zn, 1.63 wt % Cu, 3450 mg/kg Sn, 826 mg/kg Pb, 780 mg/kg As, and 116 mg/kg Cd. Zn is mainly contained in willemite, whereas other metals and metalloids are mainly concentrated in matte drops. The willemite and matte drops are converted to Fe-hydroxides during weathering, indicating that potentially toxic metals and metalloids contained in these phases are released by weathering processes. Therefore, weathering of the artisanalhttp://www.mdpi.com/2075-163X/3/4/412/htm
Toxic Metals and Oxidative Stress Part I: Mechanisms Involved in Me-tal induced Oxidative Damage | BenthamScience
Title: Toxic Metals and Oxidative Stress Part I: Mechanisms Involved in Me-tal induced Oxidative Damage. VOLUME: 1 ISSUE: 6. Author(s): Nuran Ercal, Hande Gurer-Orhan and Nukhet Aykin-Burns. Affiliation:Department of Chemistry,University of Missouri-Rolla, 142 Schrenk Hall, Rolla, MO 65409-0010,USA.. Abstract: Toxic metals (lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic) are widely found in our environment. Humans are exposed to these metals from numerous sources, including contaminated air, water, soil and food. Recent studies indicate that transition metals act as catalysts in the oxidative reactions of biological macromolecules therefore the toxicities associated with these metals might be due to oxidative tissue damage. Redox-active metals, such as iron, copper and chromium, undergo redox cycling whereas redox-inactive metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury and others deplete cells major antioxidants, particularly thiol-containing antioxidants and enzymes. Either redox-active or redox-inactive ...http://www.eurekaselect.com/81596/article
Minimizing the Environmental Impact of Construction Materials in Playground Design| Research Project Database | Grantee...
We are a playground design team at Louisiana State University that has been involved with playground design projects for the past seven years. Playgrounds are extremely important to society because they promote the physical, mental, and social well being of children. Developing environmentally friendly methods to design and construct playgrounds is important. There are two environmental issues in playground design that we seek to address in this proposal. The sugarcane processing industries in the southern United States are facing problems with disposing of thousands of tons of bagasse, a waste by-product of the process. Wasted sugar cane bagasse has the potential of being used as an effective playground surfacing material that will be environmentally friendly and will benefit the economy and society as a whole. Also, the pressure-treated wood present in the play structures installed during the 1960s and 1970s until 2003 was processed using chromated copper arsenic (CCA). ...https://cfpub.epa.gov/ncer_abstracts/index.cfm/fuseaction/display.abstractDetail/abstract/7732/report/0

Ayurveda For You: 2016
Almost all these studies were based on information obtained from ayurvedic medicines prepared from calcined metals and inorganic substances like mercury, arsenic sulphide, antimony and so on. No information is available on the content of heavy metals in traditional ayurvedic medicines prepared exclusively from herbs. Twelve years have elapsed and not even one CSIR institute or the Bureau of Indian Standards had the thoughtfulness to carry out a dispassionate enquiry into the so-called presence of lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury in traditional ayurvedic formulations prepared exclusively using herbs. A small band of researchers in CARe Keralam Ltd, an Ayurveda consortium in Chalakudi, Kerala, India has finally published a research paper in Aryavaidyan (Volume 28, No.2, published by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal) demonstrating that 126 ayurvedic formulations produced by 32 companies and 34 common ayurvedic herbs collected from all geographical regions of India contained these ...http://ayurveda-foryou.blogspot.com/2016/
February Readers' Digest Edition... Poisons Used For Healing - Medical Articles by Dr. Ray
In this February's Readers' Digest edition there is an article about the use of poisons of nature for healing purposes (article entitled "Healing Power of Poison"). For instance arsenic trioxide has been used recently in a trial with leukemia patients to get a remission of leukemia in 70% of cases. Arsenic, which normally is a powerful poison, has in the right dilution this healing effect in leukemia with less toxic side-effects than chemotherapy.. Dr. J. Michael McIntosh, a psychiatrist at the University of Utah, is researching the poisonous effect of a marine snail that attaches to and kills fish with a toxin. This poison is a powerful painkiller. It is several hundred times stronger than morphine, but is useful as it does not have any effect on the strength or functioning of muscles. This substance used in the right diluted dose, may one day be used for the treatment of chronic pain syndromes.. The bacterium Clostridium botulinum produced a powerful toxin, which causes ...http://www.askdrray.com/february-readers-digest-edition-poisons-used-for-healing/
History of Art: 19th Century Landscape - Figure in the Landscape
Brown Carrying Corn 1854-5. Ford Maddox Brown was walking with his wife and liked the way the colour of the corn and the turnips interacted and visited the site near Finchley twenty one times. He was engaged by the emerald green of the turnips against the corn and spent 70 hours on the painting. (Note: emerald green was a popular colour but it was made from arsenic and it was reported by The Times in the 1860s that the colouring was poisonous. William Morris later choose to ignore the contemporary health concerns even though children were dying sleeping in rooms with emerald green wallpaper. He was a shareholder in the largest arsenic mine in the world). Brown commented the turnips 'change from day to day'. The painting was rejected by the Royal Academy but was shown at a Pre-Raphaelite exhibition in 1857. We see layering, framing, echoing, a strong vertical, a rising moon and pools of light in the centre. The sun is setting on the corn and the foreground shadow partly ...http://history-of-art.blogspot.com/2005/11/19th-century-landscape-figure-in.html

What Does Ironite Do for Soil? | eHow
Ironite is a material commercially sold as a fertilizer. It is made from waste products from the Iron King large-scale mine located in Arizona and other large-scale mining operations. Controversy has surrounded Ironite for many years because it contains arsenic, lead and other heavy metals. Though producers claim that the heavy metals are in a form that do not pose a threat to human health or the environment at large, concerns over the leaching of heavy metals from Ironite use has led to a ban on Ironite fertilizer in Canada and prolonged research by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).. ...https://www.ehow.com/info_8561774_ironite-do-soil.html

California's Water Quality Challenges - Public Policy Institute of California
Almost 400 small rural water systems and schools are unable to provide safe drinking water. In some areas, nitrate-produced by nitrogen fertilizers and manure-is polluting local groundwater basins. Chemicals such as arsenic and chromium-6 are also a challenge. Treatment to remove contaminants is costly for small systems that do not benefit from economies of scale. Solutions for at-risk communities statewide would require additional expenditures of $30-$160 million annually, and this number is likely to grow as requirements are tightened. Effective wastewater management is also a challenge in many of these communities. New state funding and administrative support-including more flexibility to encourage consolidation with larger systems-will help, but durable funding for system operations is needed ...http://www.ppic.org/publication/californias-water-quality-challenges/
