*  Television viewing time and reduced life expectancy: A life table analysis
Background Prolonged television (TV) viewing time is unfavourably associated with mortality outcomes, particularly for cardiovascular disease, but the impact on life expectancy has not been quantifi ed. The authors estimate the extent to which TV viewing time reduces life expectancy in Australia, 2008. Methods The authors constructed a life table model that incorporates a previously reported mortality risk associated with TV time. Data were from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study, a national population-based observational survey that started in 1999-2000. The authors modelled impacts of changes in population average TV viewing time on life expectancy at birth. Results The amount of TV viewed in Australia in 2008 reduced life expectancy at birth by 1.8 years (95% uncertainty interval (UI): 8.4 days to 3.7 years) for men and 1.5 years (95% UI: 6.8 days to 3.1 years) for women. Compared with persons who watch no TV, those who spend a ...

*  National television violence study - Sage Publications, inc - Google Books
The National Television Violence Study is the most thorough and comprehensive study of violence on television to date. The Study responds to enormous public concern about the harmful effects of television on society. In 1993, Senator Paul Simon of Illinois issues a challenge to the television industry to voluntarily pursue an independent assessment of violence on television. In 1994, the cable television industry accepted Simon's challenge by commissioning a prestigious group of media effects researchers from four major universities to conduct a three-year study of TV violence. The project includes an oversight council of representatives from 18 leading public health, legal, medical, research, and entertainment industry policy organizations. Based on the largest and most representative sample of television content ever evaluated by a single scientific study, National ...

*  Muter et al., Extended Reading of Continuous Text on Television Screens
Thirty-two subjects read continuous text for 2 hours. Half read from a television screen (video condition) and half read from a book. Subjects experienced little nausea or headache in either condition. A small amount of dizziness, fatigue, and eyestrain was produced by reading, but there were no significant differences between the book condition and the video condition on these measures, nor was there a difference in comprehension scores. Video subjects read 28.5% more slowly than book subjects. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed. In the video condition, the presence of proportional horizontal spacing had no effect on reading speed or comprehension. The results suggest that extended reading of continuous text on television screens is certainly feasible. INTRODUCTION. Within the next few decades, people may be able to access much of the published information in the world from their living rooms by using videotex. (Videotex, sometimes called "interactive ...

*  System and method for simultaneous network recording and playback of digital television programs - Patent application
0040]FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram of a system in which a television program is received over a network connection 130 or 132 within a LAN 100 from a STB 110, 112, or 114 by a network storage server 122. The LAN network 100 can include a wired network connection 130 or a wireless network connection 132. The received television program data can be encoded in various transport formats, such as MPEG transport streams etc. and may be provided using a variety of protocols, such as, for example, UDP, RTP, or TCP/IP. The TCP/IP implementation is described in detail here. After reception of the television program data, the data can be stored on one or more permanent memory storage devices 124 within the network storage server 122 for later distribution to STB devices 110, 112, and 114 for playback on display devices 116, 118, or 120. The memory device 124 can be, for example, a magnetic storage medium (e.g., a hard disk), an optical disk, or a flash memory. Thus, ...

*  Combustion Characteristics of Flat Panel Televisions With and Without Fire Retardants in the Casing | SpringerLink
For the televisions tested in this study, US market televisions contain significantly greater amounts of bromine and antimony in the plastics comprising the cases than corresponding televisions purchased in Mexico or Brazil indicating the US televisions were designed to be resistant to external ignition. This design characteristic was confirmed as US market televisions also showed much greater resistance to ignition of the casing to an external open flame. It required more than ten times the energy with extended exposure to cause these televisions to ignite and in four out of the six trials the televisions did not achieve sustained ignition. In the two cases where sustained ignition for the US market televisions occurred, it was not the FPD television itself which ignited, but the stand and mounting bracket leading to fire growth. The stands ignited early ...

*  The Relationship Between Parents' and Children's Television Viewing | Articles | Pediatrics
Using national samples of parents, this study found that parent TVV is associated with child TVV across all ages when controlling for media access variables (eg, bedroom television), parent coviewing and time restrictions, parental characteristics, and demographic/household characteristics. Parent TVV had a stronger relationship to child time than parental rules about TVV and coviewing, and this pattern persisted for all of the child age groups. When controlling for all these other factors, among all parents, every hour of parent TVV resulted in an additional 23 minutes of child TVV.. Both the similarities and differences in the effects of contributors to youth TVV on the different age groups are noteworthy. Regardless of child age, parent TVV was the strongest predictor of child TVV. The effects of coviewing and time limits on child TVV differed by child age, suggesting that parenting styles may vary over time and that developmental factors may affect coviewing. Access to bedroom media was ...

The most corrosive piece of technology that I've ever seen is called television - but then, again, television, at its best, is magnificent. (Steve Jobs, quoted in Goodell, J. 02 Dec 2003. Steve Jobs: The Rolling Stone interview. Rolling Stone, http://www.keystonemac.com/pdfs/Steve_Jobs_Interview.pdf).. Both corrosive and magnificent? Do you agree, or do you watch television at all? Do you watch television programs on your iPad, on Netflix or on DVDs rather than network broadcasting? Is television a cultural tool or a detriment to civilized life? Is it in its infancy, ascendancy or decline?. However you answer these questions, the television industry permeates not only our leisure time but our daily lives and understandings of the world. This study was inspired by the rise in television targeting toddlers and preverbal infants (e.g., Teletubbies, Baby Mozart). Overall, we investigated if very young children who are in the early stages of language acquisition can learn vocabulary quickly (fast map) from television programs. Using a fast mapping paradigm, this study examined a group (n = 48) of toddlers (15-24 months) and their ability to learn novel words. Utilizing a repeated measures design, we compared children's ability to learn various novel words in 5 different conditions. These included the presentation and identification of a novel word by an adult speaker via live presentation when the toddler was attending (i.e., joint reference), an adult via live presentation when the toddler was not attending, an adult speaker on television, and an edited clip from a children's television program (Teletubbies). Overall, the toddlers were most successful in learning novel words in ...

By ∼2.5 years of age, children are able to comprehend and learn from age-appropriate, child-directed television programs, although comprehension of more complex television programming continues to increase at least up to ∼12 years of age.15 Once comprehension is established, television begins to influence child knowledge and, therefore, cognitive development more generally. This influence can be both positive and negative. On the positive side, numerous evaluations of preschool educational television programs such as "Sesame Street" have found a positive impact on vocabulary, literacy, social behavior, and academic knowledge.16 Educational television viewing is associated with greater school readiness and increased academic performance that is traceable through high school.17,18 There is little question from a large amount of research that educational television has a positive impact on cognitive ...
