*  Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the European Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale for Brazilian Portuguese.
OBJECTIVE: To adapt and validate a Brazilian Portuguese version of the European Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale.. METHODS: The cross-cultural adaptation (translation, synthesis, back-translation, expert committee review, and pretesting) and validation (assessment of face validity, content validity, and internal consistency reliability) were carried out in accordance with the literature. The European Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale assesses key components of self-care: recognition of the signs and symptoms of decompensated heart failure (HF) and decision-making when these signs and symptoms arise. It comprises 12 items (range 12-60, where lower scores indicate better self-care).. RESULTS: The sample comprised 124 HF patients with a mean age of 62.3 ± 12 years. The Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency was 0.70 and the intraclass correlation coefficient for reproducibility was 0.87.. CONCLUSION: Face and content validity, ...

*  The Effectiveness of Diabetes Patient Education and Self-Management Education in Persons With Type 2 Diabetes - Full Text View ...
In the current health care environment, it is unacceptable for patient education programs to merely provide information. Rather, educational programs must concentrate on behavior change and on supporting patients to become more confident and motivated in participating in managing their health. Persons with type 2 diabetes attending a Diabetes Education Centre will be assigned to either a group that receives regular professionally-led diabetes patient education (control group) or to to a group that receives regular professionally-led diabetes patient education augmented by lay-led self-management education i.e., the Stanford six-session Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (experimental group). Data will be collected at two points in time (0 and 6 months). Outcome measures will show if participants who receive self-management training in addition to regular patient education are able to:manage their diabetes more effectively; engage in the specific behaviors that keep the condition from ...

For the 3.5 million workers with CHD, daily self-care (i.e., treatment adherence, symptom monitoring and symptom management) must take place within the context of work.. Objective: To describe the self-care practices of aging workers (,age 50 years) with CHD and examine the relationship of work organization (work processes and organizational practices), job-level factors and self-care.. Methods: In this mixed methods study, 125 working adults with CHD completed valid and reliable instruments about organizational and job-related factors (job stress, job control, and work-life balance (WLB)), individual-level factors (mood, physical functioning) and self-care. A purposively selected subsample (n=40) participated in interviews about self-care within the context of work. Multiple regression examined the determinants of self-care. Then, qualitative data were analyzed using thematic content analysis, followed by ...

*  Type 2 Diabetes Self-management Intervention for Low-income Women - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
In recent years, the prevalence of diabetes has significantly increased among women and because of the expected fast growth rate of minority populations, the number of women in these groups who will be diagnosed with diabetes is also expected to increase significantly over the coming years. Among women from minority groups diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death while it is the seventh among non-Hispanic White females. Non-compliance to diabetes self-care is a major concern for type 2 diabetic women of racial/ethnic groups because of the existing socio-economic and environmental barriers. Often, these women live in poverty; have less than a high school education as well as language barriers and inadequate health literacy, which further place them at risk for complications, and the daily activities of diabetes self-care are implemented within the context of family responsibilities and patient's priorities.. This study is a 12-month randomized controlled trial designed ...

BACKGROUND: COPD self-management is a complex behavior influenced by many factors. Despite scientific evidence that better disease outcomes can be achieved by enhancing self-management, many COPD patients do not respond to self-management interventions. To move toward more effective self-management interventions, knowledge of characteristics associated with activation for self-management is needed. ... read more The purpose of this study was to identify key patient and disease characteristics of activation for self-management. METHODS: An explorative cross-sectional study was conducted in primary and secondary care in patients with COPD. Data were collected through questionnaires and chart reviews. The main outcome was activation for self-management, measured with the 13-item Patient Activation Measure (PAM). *  Eugene Eric Kim » We Are Not Freaking Butterflies: An Update on Self-Care and Balance
It's been two years since I've blogged about how my self-care practices have been going, a marked contrast from 2013, which is when I finally double-downed on my commitment to take better care of myself and to live a more balanced life. That was the year I left the company that I co-founded and the team that I loved to start my life and my livelihood over again. It was a hard process, and I blogged about it many times that year, but I was committed and determined, and I was fortunate to have lots of loving support.. Things finally turned a corner in 2015. I am exceptionally proud of this shift, and I love the life I've been living, but I remain cautious.. My friend, Jodie, recently told me that she hated when people used the word, "transformation," to describe changes in their lives. I wholeheartedly agree. We are not caterpillars dissolving into some shapeless goo and emerging, irreversibly, from mummy-like nests in new winged forms. We are human beings. Maybe some wires in ...

*  Self-Management Programs for Quality of Life in People With Stroke | Stroke
Self-management can offer stroke survivors a pathway to promote their recovery. Self-management programs for people with stroke can include specific education about stroke and likely effects but essentially also focus on skills training to encourage people to take an active part in their own management. Such skills training can include problem-solving, goal-setting, decision-making, and coping skills.. The objectives of this review1 were to assess the effects of self-management interventions on the quality of life of adults with stroke who are living in the community, compared with inactive or active (usual care) control interventions.. Our methods included searching the following databases from inception to April 2016: the Cochrane Stroke Group Trials Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SCOPUS, Web of Science, OTSeeker, OTSearch, PEDro, REHABDATA, and DARE. *  Self-management support for men with chronic pain : McGill Reporter
Richard Hovey, Ph.D. Project Lead and PI. Associate Professor, Division of Oral Health and Society, Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University. Abstract. In order to ensure that health services remain sustainable in the future whilst still delivering positive patient outcomes, empowering and supporting the increasing number of people living with long term conditions to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence to 'self-manage' their own health has become a key strategy. A wide range of self-management support programmes and initiatives have been developed to achieve this goal, but we know that the goals of self-management support interventions do not always easily map onto the goals and priorities of patients. In particular, men are considerably under-represented in self-management support programmes despite their increased likelihood of developing the more common and disabling long term conditions such as chronic pulmonary disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.. Having additional insight into patients' self-care is important for clinicians working with a hypertensive patient population. Health care providers can be more effective lifestyle counselors when they understand specific areas that can help patients achieve optimal BP control. This study examined the relationships between self-report practices reflecting the JNC 7 hypertension self-care activities and clinical BPs among primary care patients with hypertension.. For 5 of the 6 hypertension self-care activities, H-SCALE subscale scores were weakly associated with clinical BPs in the expected direction. Greater adherence to medications, increased physical activity levels, and greater adherence to weight management practices were negatively associated with higher levels of systolic and diastolic BP after adjusting for covariates. Medication adherence was significantly correlated with systolic BP after controlling for ...
