*  WHO | Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS)
A well-functioning civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system registers all births and deaths, issues birth and death certificates, and compiles and disseminates vital statistics, including cause of death information. It may also record marriages and divorces. Despite the well-documented benefits of CRVS, many countries do not have adequate systems in place. The births of tens of millions of children are known to be unregistered every year, and it is estimated that two-thirds of deaths are never registered and are thus not counted in the vital statistics system. ...

*  County-Specific Net Migration by Five-Year Age Groups, Hispanic Origin, Race, and Sex, 1990-2000: [United States]
This data collection provides net migration estimates by five-year age groups, Hispanic origin, race, and sex for counties of the United States from 1990 to 2000. These estimates were derived from United States census data from 1990 to 2000, and from vital statistics collected by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) for years 1990 through 1999 using the vital statistics (VS) method. The dataset contains the state and county Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) codes that uniquely identify counties within a state. Several data categories are presented in the collection. Vital statistics data tabulate births by sex, race, and Hispanic origin for the periods 1990-1994 and 1995-1999, and deaths by sex, race, Hispanic origin, and age groups for the period 1990-2000. The enumerated and adjusted 1990 and 2000 population ...

*  Difference between revisions of "Vermont, Vital Records (FamilySearch Historical Records)" Genealogy - FamilySearch Wiki
The records are handwritten on preprinted pages which have been bound into volumes. The collection consists of vital records (births, marriages, and deaths), cemetery records, and burial and removal permits. They are arranged by town, record type, then date. The content and completeness of the records varies by town. Vital record keeping began with the earliest permanent settlement, about 1760. All original records are maintained by the town or city. The present vital registration law was enacted in 1857. This statute required all vital events be recorded in the town where they occurred. A centralized registration system was established in 1919 and copies of the town vital records was sent to the state. This collection contains records compiled and submitted to the state by town clerks in response to the ...

*  Mortality Detail Files, 1968-1991
Data Collection Notes: There are no Parts 1-5 for this collection.. The Reason-for-Death codes for 1968-1978 are different from those in subsequent years. A revised United States Standard Certificate of Death was recommended for state use beginning on January 1, 1989. Among the changes were the addition of a new item on educational attainment and changes to improve the medical certification of cause of death. In addition, for the first time, the United States Standard Certificate of Death includes a question on the Hispanic origin of the decedent.. Starting with the 1989 vital event files, a new policy on the release of vital statistics unit record data files was implemented to prevent the inadvertent disclosure of the identities of individuals and institutions. As a result, the 1989 and later year files do not contain the actual day of the death or date of birth of the decedent.. The geographic detail is also restricted.. ...

*  Demography : Wikis (The Full Wiki)
There are two methods of data collection: direct and indirect. Direct data come from vital statistics registries that track all births and deaths as well as certain changes in legal status such as marriage, divorce, and migration (registration of place of residence). In developed countries with good registration systems (such as the United States and much of Europe), registry statistics are the best method for estimating the number of births and deaths.. The census is the other common direct method of collecting demographic data. A census is usually conducted by a national government and attempts to enumerate every person in a country. However, in contrast to vital statistics data, which are typically collected continuously and summarized on an annual basis, censuses typically occur only every 10 years or so, and thus are not usually the best source of data ...

*  Critical Care Illness - The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma
While the human suffering and death caused by injury is well recognized, injury has a significant economic impact that must be considered when public policy regarding trauma centers is debated or discussed.. The human costs alone are staggering. Unintentional injury is the fifth leading cause of death after heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, and stroke. When one also includes intentional injury in the form of suicide and homicide, injury becomes the third leading cause of death. In 2007, a total of 176,665 Americans died as the result of injury. According to the world health organization, worldwide, road collisions alone killed 2.1 million people in 2008 while intentional injury resulted in another 2.7 million deaths. Unlike the other leading causes of death, however, injury disproportionately strikes younger individuals. In the United States, injury is the leading cause of death for individuals between 1 and 44 years of age. In fact, for those between 1 and 34 years of ...

*  Heart disease: The nation's most deadly disease - News - The Daily Record - Wooster, OH
(BPT) -- Few people understand just how much a threat cardiovascular disease (CVD), or heart disease, can be. Consider this: heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Cardiovascular disease claims more lives each year than cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease and accidents combined. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 71 million American adults (33.5 percent)-have high LDL, or 'bad,' cholesterol and only one out of every three adults with

Overall, the findings of GBD 2010 convey some good news for sub-Saharan Africa, but they also point to emerging challenges in the region, particularly arising from the double burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, preventable road traffic injuries, and related risk factors at both population and health system levels. And, as noted by Lancet editor Richard Horton, the global health community, including governments, research institutions and international agencies, need to make a major commitment in the years ahead to "improve the measurement of health" by strengthening civil registration and vital statistics systems as a development priority building upon the "energy and momentum" generated by GBD 2010.. As we learn more from the "data-rich framework" offered by GBD 2010 to better understand the changing disease, injury and health risk profile in Africa, it would be important to also keep in mind World Bank President Jim Yong ...

*  Types of Studies - Birthing Naturally
Survey research is generally cross-sectional, meaning the research team tries to gather information from people to represent the population at one point in time. A census is a special type of cross-sectional survey which attempts to gather data to represent the entire population at a given point in time. Vital statistics data is cross-sectional, and the Listening to Mothers series of studies are also cross-sectional surveys. They give us a view of what things look like right now, allow us to compare groups and measure trends over time.. In contrast, longitudinal studies follow the participants over a given and make multiple observations. Sometimes these studies last many years such as the Nurses Health Study or the Framingham Heart Study. Longitudinal studies let researchers identify changes over time and sequences of events.. Again, the difference between these is the weight given to the associations found. Why? A cross-sectional study helps you identify ...
