When hydrogen is used directly in fuel cell vehicles, the three major considerations are efficiency, safety and reliability. In the Eco-CC project, which is funded by the State of Saxony, Fraunhofer IWU is working with partners to develop a cost-effective and reliable concept for measurement and control. This will ensure that the system reaches its optimal operating parameters quickly and precisely. Researchers are also optimizing the load management system for the fuel cell and working to improve economy, efficiency and durability.. Instead of utilizing hydrogen to power fuel cell vehicles, gaseous hydrogen can also be used to produce liquid fuels via methanol as a platform chemical. Combustion of these fuels produces low levels of pollution and, on a well-to-wheel comparison with fossil fuels, reduces greenhouse-gas emissions by as much as 90 percent. As with ethanol used as an additive to gasoline, these oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OME) can be mixed with diesel in order to produce a blended ...
Together with partners from industry and with support from the German federal government, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is launching an initiative to create a data space available to industry all over the world: the Industrial Data Space. Access and usage of the Industrial Data Space will be safeguarded by a set of uniform standards. The goal is to develop secure solutions in the face of wall-to-wall digitalization and the rapid shifts in industrial manufacturing and business processes that come with it.
Though frequently seen as a contradiction, these two can be reconciled by applying the German Academic Freedom Act (WissZeitVG) and the Fraunhofer fixed-term contract policy guidelines. Fraunhofer sets a two-year minimum for fixed‑term contracts and links them to qualification objectives; this serves as an orientation point for systematic career planning, in which the organization discusses development opportunities and career options with its employees ...

Fraunhofer and universities: Universities, which unite research and education, are the heart of the scientific system. They play a key role in shaping scientific, cultural, social and business development in Germany. For Fraunhofer Institutes, its a matter of course to work closely with local universities. By doing this, excellent research is linked to practical application in professional business infrastructures, leading to a new level of quality in applied fields.
Claire Siegert is a digital nomad with an ambitious vision - she wants to welcome more women in the European startup ecosystem. The project is based on a social problem: among other things, there are significantly fewer female founders than male founders, it is more difficult for female founders to obtain venture capital and, last but not least, there is a lack of female role models in leadership positions.. To welcome more female founders into the startup ecosystem, the Fraunhofer Venture alumna co-founded Businettes, a company that aims to tackle these fundamental problems and help women found their own businesses. The Businettes online incubator program guides female founders through the business ideation process towards their own business case and product. The company also shares the stories of inspiring role models and delivers workshops designed to empower women in their roles as business leaders.. Claire Siegert studied international management and marketing at the Berlin School of ...
Fiber-reinforced plastics are the basis for many applications in state-of-the-art lightweight design, and they offer numerous advantages. One major obstacle for smaller companies, however, is the requisite know-how concerning the ideal fiber and textile arrangement. In collaboration with the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) and the Assoc. Institute for Management Cybernetics (IfU) in Aachen, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM has now developed a mathematical simulation method for optimizing the drapability (deformability) of textiles.

Just as cars in Germany need to be inspected every two years to ensure they are safe, other safety-critical objects - turbines, generators or high-pressure containers, for example - have to be examined regularly as well. This is especially important when the materials and products used are pushed to their outermost performance limits in order to increase economic efficiency. To carry out these assessments, inspectors receive a printout map of the factory grounds to help them find their way. Once they locate the structure to be inspected - say, a high-pressure container - they inspect it with help from a sensor. The difficulty is that they have to inspect the entire surface. But which parts have they already evaluated with the sensor, and what still needs to be done? Inspectors also have to undergo a lengthy training process and need a great deal of experience in order to reliably gauge the condition of the various objects to be examined. It is hard to find experienced engineers for this.. ...

The hydrogen produced in this way can be used directly. For example, it can be converted into electricity by means of a fuel cell, or it can be used as a raw material in the chemical industry. The first question here is how this hydrogen is to be made available for such uses. Conventionally, hydrogen is stored at a low temperature (-253°C) or a high pressure of several hundred bars. In HYPOS (Hydrogen Power and Solutions East Germany), a BMBF initiative, a consortium of 110 members from industry and science are investigating issues related to the storage and transport of hydrogen. Fraunhofer IMWS is exploring the feasibility of storing hydrogen in a salt cavern. A transport pipeline made of metal and plastic has been constructed for this purpose.. So-called power-to-x (P2X) processes offer an alternative to a direct use of hydrogen. In this instance, hydrogen is converted into various raw materials. In a power-to-liquid process, for example, hydrogen produced with renewable energy is combined ...
We place high demands on the quality of our drinking water. If pathogens or toxic substances found their way into the piping system, many people could become infected or injured very quickly. Thats why this risk must be kept low. To do this, experts have developed technologies for a comprehensive monitoring, early warning and emergency management system.
With long waiting lists, significant journey times, an ever-shrinking number of doctors practices and the aging population, medical care services in sparsely populated regions are under mounting pressure. As part of its Neighborhood Diagnostics project, the Fraunhofer Center for Digital Diagnostics ZDD® is working to develop a digital ecosystem for delivering patient treatment close to where they live in order to ensure that people in rural areas can access high-quality medical care despite the shortage of doctors. One of the digital ecosystems key features are its decentralized health stations, which are tailored to local needs and feature fully automated labs that will ensure medical tests and diagnoses can be provided round the clock. The project will be on display at the joint Fraunhofer booth (Hall 3, Booth E74) at the MEDICA trade show in Düsseldorf from November 13 to 16, 2023.. more info ...
We rely on GPS signals to guide us to our destination as fast as possible while we are driving, sightseeing or hiking. It is hard to imagine everyday life without satellite-based positioning. However, alternative solutions are necessary for places that lack a direct line of sight to GPS satellites. Fraunhofer researchers have developed a system for navigating in buildings that can be put into operation in a matter of minutes. Their technology will demonstrate how GPS works as part of the special exhibition
The digital networking of the world is forging ahead. This makes new business models, smart services and innovative service offerings possible.
