*  Effect of Double Dose of Alpha 1-antitrypsin Augmentation Therapy on Lung Inflammation. - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov

This is a pilot study to test the effect of double dose augmentation therapy with Zemaira (CSL Behring) on lung inflammation, compared with standard doses of 60 mg/kg/week.. Our hypothesis is that some patients with AATD receiving augmentation therapy at the standard dose of 60 mg/kg/week continue to have a significant lung inflammation that may lead to detrimental clinical consequences. This inflammation can be further reduced with higher AAT dosing.. The study will enroll 20 subjects with AATD and COPD already receiving augmentation therapy with any brand at standard doses for at least a month. For inclusion and exclusion criteria see below.. Protocol:. The study will take place over approximately 12 weeks: a month receiving Zemaira at standard dose (60 mg/kg/week), a month at double dose (120 mg/kg/week) and a month at standard dose (60 mg/kg/week). The infusions at standard doses will be done at home and infusions with higher doses will be provided at the study site.. the study involves ...

*  T Cell Costimulatory and Coinhibitory Pathways in Vascular Inflammatory Diseases

A broad array of evidence indicates that T lymphocytes make significant contributions to vascular inflammation in the setting of atherosclerotic disease, hypertension, autoimmune vasculitis, and other disorders. Experimental data show that costimulatory and coinhibitory pathways involving molecules of the B7-CD28 and TNF-TNFR families regulate T cell responses that promote vascular disease. Antigen presenting cells (APCs) display both peptide-major histocompatibility complex antigen and costimulators or coinhibitors to T cells. Two major types of APCs, dendritic cells (DCs) and macrophages, are present in significant numbers in the walls of arteries affected by atherosclerosis and arteritis, and some DCs are present in normal arteries. Costimulatory and coinhibitory molecules expressed by these vascular APCs can contribute to the activation or inhibition of effector T cells within the arterial wall. Vascular DCs may also be involved in transport of antigens to secondary lymphoid organs, ...

THE NEWSLETTER Department of History • The University of North Carolina Number 53 Chapel Hill, North Carolina Autumn 2004 GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIR Historians know that nothing ever stays the same and that all human institutions are forever changing across time. We have seen this familiar historical process unfolding in Hamil-ton Hall over the past year as the UNC History Department passed through its own modest version of regime change and the continuing evolution of our faculty and staff. Our De-partment Chair for the last five and a half years, Peter Cocla-nis, accepted a new administrative position (Associate Provost for International Affairs) and moved to South Building at the beginning of January. Peter led the department with excep-tional efficiency, good sense, and vision, so his departure from the chair's position marked an important change and challenge for the life of our community. It also led to my appointment as the new chair-a post that I have assumed with apprecia-tion for the ...
