*  Intermittent pneumatic compression - Wikipedia
Intermittent pneumatic compression is a therapeutic technique used in medical devices that include an air pump and inflatable auxiliary sleeves, gloves or boots in a system designed to improve venous circulation in the limbs of patients who suffer edema or the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). In use, an inflatable jacket (sleeve, glove or boot) encloses the limb requiring treatment, and pressure lines are connected between the jacket and the air pump. When activated, the pump fills the air chambers of the jacket in order to pressurize the tissues in the limb, thereby forcing fluids, such as blood and lymph, out of the pressurized area. A short time later, the pressure is reduced, allowing increased blood flow back into the limb. The primary functional aim of the device "is to squeeze blood from the underlying deep veins, which, assuming that the valves are competent, will be displaced proximally." When the inflatable sleeves deflate, the veins will replenish ...

Varicose veins are a common problem, affecting up to a third of the western adult population. Most suffer with aching, discomfort, pruritis, and muscle cramps, whilst complications include oedema, eczema, lipodermatosclerosis, ulceration, phlebitis, and bleeding. This is known to have a significant negative effect on patient's quality of life (QoL).. Surgery has been used for many years, but it is known that there is a temporary decline in QoL post-op. This was demonstrated in our pilot study. Surgery leads to painful and prolonged recovery in some patients and has the risks of infection, haematoma and nerve injury.. Recurrence rates are known to be significant. Duplex of veins post surgery has demonstrated persistent reflux in 9-29% of cases at 1 year, 13-40% at 2 years, 40% at 5 years and 60% at 34 years.. 26% of NHS patients were 'very dissatisfied' with their varicose vein surgery.. Newer, less invasive treatments are being developed. It would be advantageous to find a treatment that avoided ...

In operative treatment the great saphenous vein will be removed after flush ligation by femoral vein and stripping of the trunk. In intravenous laser treatment a thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny distal entry point. The probe is guided into place using ultrasound and the procedure is performed under local tumescence anesthesia. Laser energy is delivered to seal the faulty vein. Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy involves an injection of foam (sodium tetradecyl sulfate mixed with air according to the Thessari method) directly into the venous trunk under ultrasound control. In each group patients will use supportive treatment stockings 2 weeks after treatment. The patients in all groups are followed up one year by ultrasound scanning ...

A digital video data compression system compresses digital words as small as four-bits into two-bit words by means of a combination of coarse data compression and delta modulation data compression. In response to the two most significant bits being the same for five contiguous words, the apparatus switches into delta modulation mode in which the digital word representing the video brightness (sixteen shades of gray in the four-bit embodiment herein) is incremented or decremented by one level or left unchanged. In the encoder section, a delta modulation loop responds to the delta modulation commands to maintain a digital word of the same value which is created by the same command in the decoder section, and that value is compared with incoming words so as to cause the operation to shift into a coarse mode when the delta-modulated word varies from the incoming word by more than three levels, the two-bit compressed word representing, in the coarse mode, the two ...

*  Feasibility Study of Geko vs. IPCs in Trauma - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
Trauma patients are at a high risk of developing blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis - DVT), which can travel to the lungs and cause serious health consequences. Often, these patients cannot receive blood-thinning medication to prevent these blood clots because of the risk of bleeding; in this case, they are usually given intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCs) to prevent blood clots. IPCs are inflatable sleeves that fit over the legs and periodically inflate and deflate, helping to pump blood out of the legs and thus reduce the risk of blood clot formation. Several studies suggest that IPCs are working properly on the patient only 60-70% of the time. Some patients also find them uncomfortable. A new device (geko) that works by stimulating the leg muscles and increasing blood flow in the legs has recently been developed. To compare the geko with IPCs, this study will randomly assign trauma patients who cannot receive blood thinners for blood clot prevention to either IPCs ...

*  USC-SIPI REPORT #354
Widespread deployment of multimedia applications is continuing to create a need for low cost chip designs that can be incorporated into all sorts of consumer devices, such as portable communicators or home appliances. This surge in the use of digital multimedia information has been enabled to a large extent by the emergence of standard algorithms for compression of speech, audio, images and video. In this proposal we will focus on digital video systems, as they are the most challenging in terms of both computation and memory requirements, but many of the results of our work will be easily applicable to other types of media (including emerging ones such as stereo and multiview video), as well as to future compression standards. A common characteristic of all compression standards is that they rely on lossy compression, that is, the decoded video is not an exact copy of the original. A key in the design of a successful video ...

The pathogenesis of CVLU involves high numbers of activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) that are associated with persistent inflammation in the wound bed 5-9. We propose to test the efficacy of an oral, nutrient intervention containing the bioactive components of fish oil to assuage PMN activity and promote healing of CVLU. If this systemic, nutrient intervention is found to alter the microenvironment of CVLU, the science of wound healing and care of patients with CVLU will be vastly improved.. The purpose of this study is to test three fundamental corollaries of our organizing hypothesis in a 2-group, double-blind, randomized, experimental design on CVLU patients. The findings from the proposed experiments will increase our understanding of lipid mediators that influence wound healing and PMN function, and may lead to an innovative approach to reduce the physical and emotional burdens of nonhealing or recurrent CVLU. ...
