Yersinia intermedia is a Gram-negative species of bacteria which uses rhamnose, melibiose, and raffinose. Its type strain is strain 3953 (=CIP 80-28 =ATCC 29909 =Bottone 48 =Chester 48). It has been found in fish, and contains several biotypes. It is not considered of clinical relevance, being isolated from humans in a routine manner. Abstract An antibody reactive with the galactosyl(α1-2)galactose [gal(α1-2)gal] epitope was characterized in human sera by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, red blood cell (RBC) and laminin absorption, and oligosaccharide inhibition. This antibody was found evenly distributed between the IgG and IgM classes and was present at high titers in the serum of all normal adults studied, but in 75% of children less than three years of age, it was observed at the lower limit of detection, and gradually increased to adult levels by the age of six. Although this antibody bound to gal(α1-3)gal-linked synthetic antigens, it did not bind to the same residues present in rabbit, rat, and guinea pig RBC or in murine laminin or nidogen. These latter results, plus the fact that antigen-antibody binding was strongly blocked by gal(α1-2)gal but not by methyl-α-galactopyranoside or melibiose, suggest that this antibody is indeed different from anti-gal(α1-3)gal antibody. Brewing yeasts may be classed as "top-cropping" (or "top-fermenting") and "bottom-cropping" (or "bottom-fermenting"). The genotypic and phenotypic diversity among isolates of the Lactobacillus curvatus/Lactobacillus graminis/Lactobacillus sakei group was evaluated by comparing RAPD data and results of biochemical tests, such as hydrolysis of arginine, D-lactate production, melibiose and xylose fermentation, and the presence of haem-dependent catalase. Analyses were applied to five type strains and to a collection of 165 isolates previously assigned to L. sakei or L. curvatus. Phenotypic and RAPD data were compared with each other and with previous DNA-DNA hybridization data. The phenotypic and genotypic separation between L. sakei, L. curvatus and L graminis was clear, and new insights into the detailed structure within L. sakei and L. curvatus were obtained. The direct use of soybeans [Glycine max L., (Merrill)] for human food is limited due to the presence of undigestible factors. One of these is thought to be stachyose. The course of stachyose disappearance during germination was followed. Soybeans were germinated by a standard procedure and by the same procedure interrupted with a period of water steeping. The effect of hypochlorite addition to the steep water also was investigated. The contents of mono- and oligosaccharides changed similarly with all three methods of germination for a 144-hour period. During the first 96 hours the monosaccharide content increased. Raffinose disappeared by the end of 96 hours of germination, and stachyose disappeared by the end of 144 hours of germination. Steeping resulted in a decrease in the rate of rootlet growth without a decrease in the rate of disappearance of stachyose or raffinose. Yes, last week was fairly bad. After that last post, I had an animal die under anaesthesia. I think that really was the rock bottom of suckiness. Had a complete breakdown at work, which was kinda embarassing. I think it was like one thing on top of another, which just piled up till the dam broke. And once the dam broke, there's nothing you can do till the pressure relieves itself. People at work kept on telling me how it wasn't my fault, and that these things happen under anaesthetic and everything, but still it didn't make me feel any less worthless. It felt like it was seriously a sign from above telling me I'm not meant to be a vet. To top if off, I came home from work to find a Melb Uni brochure waiting in my room, with details of how to apply for postgrad studies.
