*  Diversity and evolution of bodyguard manipulation | Journal of Experimental Biology

In contrast to the previous examples where manipulated hosts played an active and direct role against natural enemies of the parasitoid, the following studies describe cases where the host is manipulated prior to parasitoid pupation in order to provide shelter against potential biotic and abiotic threats. Although these bodyguards do not directly face the threats, the benefits for parasitoid survival are equally important.. With their studies on the aphid parasitoid Aphidius nigripes, Brodeur and McNeil tested the hypothesis that parasitic wasps could avoid natural enemies in time or space through the selection of suitable pupation sites by modifying the behaviour of their host (Brodeur and McNeil, 1989; Brodeur and McNeil, 1992) (Table 1). Aphidius nigripes, an endoparasitoid of the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae, completes its pupal development within its eviscerated host (termed 'mummy'). Inside the mummy, the parasitic wasp spins a cocoon and pupates (Fig. 1D). In this state, it remains ...

*  "Characterization of Aminoalkylcarbamoyl Cellulosic and Chitosan Deriva" by Melissa Ann Manuszak guerrini

Polymer and surfactant interactions have been a subject of intense research due to industrial applications utilizing a polymer-surfactant system, such as cosmetic formulation. A series of aminoalkylcarbamoyl cellulose derivatives were prepared from the amidation of methylcarboxymethyl cellulose. These derivatives were quaternized with either iodomethane, or hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride, or epichlorohydrin and dimethylamine to yield polyquaternary ammonium salts. The focus of this dissertation is the characterization of a family of these compounds based on N,N$\sp\prime$,-dimethylethylene diamine. As these compounds are similar to Polyquaternium 10, a quaternized hydroxyethyl cellulose derivative, the solution properties have been characterized; antimicrobial activity and keratin affinity have been determined. Viscosity measurements indicated that derivatives containing a low number of cationic charges per graft and shorter graft length have the highest viscosity. Solubility studies showed

Additional reports have also been noted with norfloxacin, pefloxacin, ofloxacin, and recently levofloxacin as precipitating agents.6 The large body of data provided by clinical reports, histopathological examination, and experimental studies provides cogent evidence supporting a direct link between FQ use and tendonitis/tendon rupture.[6] As of July 2008, the FDA mandated that all FQ products have a black-box warning indicating an increased risk in adverse events including tendon rupture. FQ products affected by the labeling changes include ciprofloxacin (Cipro, Bayer, and generics), extended-release ciprofloxacin (Cipro XR, Bayer; Proquin XR, Depomed), gemifloxacin (Factive, Oscient), levofloxacin (Levaquin, Ortho McNeil), moxifloxacin (Avelox, Bayer), norfloxacin (Noroxin, Merck), and ofloxacin (Floxin, Ortho McNeil, and generic).[1]. What are the risk factors associated with FQ-induced tendinopathy/tendon rupture?. Risk factors associated with FQ-induced tendon disorders include age greater ...

In 1998, the groups of Robert H. Brown Jr. [Liu et al., 1998] and Kate Bushby [Bashir et al., 1998] identified the genetic cause of the autosomal recessive muscle-wasting diseases Miyoshi myopathy (MIM# 254130), and Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy type 2B (LGMD2B; MIM# 253601) as resulting from mutations in a novel gene on chromosome 2p13. The encoded protein was named dysferlin (DYSF; MIM# 603009), relating to its involvement in muscular dystrophy, and homology with the C. elegans fer-1 protein. Using membrane repair assays on muscle fibers from dysferlin-deficient mouse models, the groups of Paul McNeil/Kevin Campbell [Bansal et al., 2003] and Robert H. Brown Jr. [Lennon et al., 2003] subsequently demonstrated a central role for dysferlin in sarcolemmal repair after membrane injury. This established Miyoshi myopathy and LGMD2B as the first entities of a new subgroup of muscular dystrophies, due to defective membrane-repair.. From a clinical point of view, numerous reports corroborated the ...

Despite all the debate over the use of cough-cold medicines in children under the age of 12, sales of cough-cold medicines didn't do too badly last year. For the 52 weeks ended Jan. 25, sales of all cough-cold remedies - including cough drops, cough syrups, cold-allergy liquids and cold-allergy tablets - were up 10.5%, totaling $4 billion across food, drug and mass outlets (minus Walmart) according to Information Resources Inc data. Of course, the lion's share of that growth comes courtesy of the latest allergy reliever to make its way from prescription vials to over-the-counter aisles. Factoring out the sales impact of McNeil Consumer Healthcare's Zyrtec, which generated in excess of $331 million across its Zyrtec syrup, Zyrtec tablet and Zyrtec-D tablet, the overall cough-cold category still grew by 1.4%. Considering that's on a base of $3.6 billion, that represents incremental growth of almost $50 million. ...

A resting tremor, which is found in about 80 percent of persons with Parkinson's disease, is a rhythmic movement that most often starts in one hand. It generally is most prominent when the hand is resting and relaxed. Over time it often travels to the opposite hand or to the leg on the same side of … Read More. ...
