*  "Makaira sp., cf. M. nigricans Lacépède, 1802 (Teleostei: Perciformes: " by Harry L. Fierstine

A nearly complete rostrum (USNM 358534) similar in morphology to the extant bluc marlin, Makaira nigricans Lacepede 1802, is identified from the GaUln Formation (late Miocene, Panama). Identification is based on comparison with a large series of Recent istiophorid species and with fossil species of the genus Makaira. The Gatlin specimen and additional examples from other fossil vertebrates provide evidence that the ancient Panama Seaway probably was a travel route between the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific for large marine vertebrates during the middle Miocene to earliest Pliocene. This is the first record of an istiophorid billfish from the Gatlin Fonnation and the second record of a fossil marlin from Panama.

*  Dr. Ernst T. Krebbs/Vitamin B17 Laetrile

Ancient Chinese substances, of the family in which laetrile is found, were used medically. Emperor Shen Nung listed kernel preparations as being useful against tumors.. Herbert Summa has written that the Egyptians,in the time of the pharaohs, also used those seeds for special purposes.. The Romans had a medicinal preparation called agua amygdalarum amarum ("bitter almond water"). It was used as a medicine for centuries.. The word "amygdalin" comes from the Greek amygdale. Celsus, Scribonius Largus,Galen, Pliny the Elder, Marcellus Empiricus, and Avicenna all used preparations containing amygdalin to treat tumors. The same is true of the medieval pharmacopoeia (Bruce Halstead, M.D.,. Amygdalin Therapy, 1977.. Laetrile is as commonplace in plants as is glucose;you eat it all the time. The substance exists in various amounts in at least 1,200 foodstuffs.. But one of the richest sources is apricot seeds (usually called apricot "pits" or kernels). Another source are "bitter almonds." The seeds ...

*  Activism for Sharks Includes Self-Mutilation and Soap - Irregular Times

It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection. These are the times when maps fade, old landmarks crumble and direction is lost. Forwards is backwards now, so we glance sideways at the strange lands through which we are all passing, knowing for certain only that our destination has disappeared. We are unready to meet these times, but we proceed nonetheless, adapting as we wander, reshaping the Earth with every tread. Behind us we have left the old times, the standard times, the high times. Welcome to the irregular times ...

Within hours of the president making a speech about bird flu, getting the media focused on something besides the Scooter Libby indictment, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid used a parliamentary maneuver and called the Senate into closed session. The reason, Reid and the Democrats want answers on whether they were lied to during the run-up to the war in Iraq. *  Famous last words: Legs eleven

I am 62, retired from running my own events business. I have been married to Stewart for 43 years and have four fantastic children, Sam, Joe, Luke and Jess, four grandchildren, Harry and Danny and new twins, Max and Charlie; I also have two step-grandchildren, Hannah and Chelsea. On 11 September 2009 I was told that the very rare leiomyosarcoma that was found in one of my veins in summer 2008, and removed, had metastasised and I now have sarcomas in my lungs. By April 2010 it had got to my liver and back to my leg. In January sarcoma nodules were found on the horse's tail, the bunch of nerves that come out of the base of my spine. Despite radiotherapy, the paralysis spread very quickly and I have no feeling at all from my hips down. I will try to log what all this feels like in this blog and keep in touch with friends, family and fellow travellers along the way ...

*  JFKfactsFact check: Nitpicking JFK point - JFKfacts

Well, that type of generalization leads us where, exactly? Here's some evidence to chew on: Detective Ed Hicks told the London Free Press (11/23/63) that as Oswald came out "A policeman asked him where he was going. He said he wanted to see what the excitement was all about.". The Sydney Morning Herald (11/23/63) reported that "Oswald walked through the door of the warehouse and was stopped by a policeman. Oswald told the policeman that 'I work here', and when another employee confirmed that he did, the policeman let Oswald walk away.". Postal Inspector Harry Holmes sat in on the November 24 interrogation, took notes, and testified that Oswald had stated that "a police officer stopped me just before I got to the front door, and started to ask me some questions, and my superintendent of the place stepped up and told the officers that I am one of the employees…" (VII p. 302). Unless Oswald had psychic powers, he had no way of knowing what was being printed around the world, so the fact that his ...

*  And I Think to Myself...What A Wonderful World.: Happy Year of the Sheep! The Bezoar Goat.

At this point, some of you are probably wondering: isn't a "bezoar" something out of Harry Potter? Yes, and it does indeed come from a goat…or any other number of things, really. A bezoar is basically a stone of miscellany that didn't get digested, and thus wound up lodged in an animal's digestive tract. Goats are far from the only animals that have them; humans can get bezoars as well. Their poison-curing properties are greatly exaggerated, with only curing arsenic poisoning anywhere near consistently (and only with treatment ...

*  J.K. Rowling: Dumbledore is a Gay Wizard Daddy - Towleroad

Rowling replied, to the reported shock and delight of the audience there: "My truthful answer to you…I always thought of Dumbledore as gay…Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald [a bad wizard he defeated long ago], and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent, but he met someone as brilliant as he was and, rather like Bellatrix, he was very drawn to this brilliant person and horribly, terribly let down by him…Yeah, that's how I always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read-through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying, 'I knew a girl once, whose hair…' I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, "Dumbledore's gay!". The revelation had fans looking for new meaning in some of the passages.. Reuters reports: "Fans on the top Potter fan ...

http://www.nica-institute.com/is-thought-action/. 28-29 November 2013, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. isthoughtaction@gmail.com. Keynote Lectures by Sut Jhally and TBA.. "[People in the humanities] don't know how to articulate how their work can have concrete effects on the world in which they live," Judith Butler said in 2000, pointing to a general anxiety in the humanities that asks, "What effect are any of us having, and what effect can we have?". Under the catchphrase "Is Thought Action?" this conference aims to investigate that anxiety, which in 2013 appears as acute as it did thirteen years ago, and to channel it into a productive dialogue. Our goal is to explore and critique points of tension between academic practice in the humanities and the wider world in the broadest sense. (How) does academic research in the humanities enter into a larger dialogue beyond the academy? Is an insistence on quantifiable results essentially opposed to the logic of humanities research? What ...
