Samples of vaginal secretions of `normal women were examined over a period of up to two years.. Patients with asymptomatic candidiasis on one occasion were more likely to have Candida albicans again when sampled a year later than were women with no yeasts on the first occasion. This principle applied also to β-haemolytic streptococci of Lancefields groups B and D.. There was no significant difference in the incidence of C. albicans in the first and the final samples collected. The persistence and new infection rates were not significantly higher in patients taking combined oral contraceptives than in other women although the highest incidence occurred in those taking a lynoestrenol/mestranol preparation.. Specimens of cerebrospinal fluid and serum from 22 cases of meningococcal infection were examined by immunoelectroosmophoresis and the results compared with those obtained by microscopy and culture. The results were the same except that three of 10 cases of group B infection were not diagnosed by immunoelectroosmophoresis and two of 10 cases of group C infection were not diagnosed by culture. The sensitivity of the method depends on the potency of the antiserum used and antisera from commercial sources were satisfactory except for those prepared against group B meningococci. The method may be more sensitive than microscopy and culture under certain conditions, in particular, where the patient has already begun antibiotic treatment, where the specimens have become contaminated and, where the infecting organism is either a group A or group C meningococcus.. ...

Mucins are high molecular weight glycoproteins with complex oligosaccharide side chains attached to the apomucin protein backbone by O-glycosidic linkage; they are found in crude mucus gels that protect epithelial surfaces in the major tracts of the body and as transmembrane proteins expressed on the apical cell surface of glandular and ductal epithelia of various organs. Changes in the sequence of glycosylation of mucins in different settings generate a variety of epitopes in the oligosaccharide side chains of mucins, including newly expressed blood-group antigens, distinguishing between normal and diseased states. Tumour-associated epitopes on mucins and their antigenicity make them suitable as immunotargets on malignant epithelial cells and their secretions, creating a surge of interest in mucins as diagnostic and prognostic markers for various diseases, and even influencing the design of mucin-based vaccines. Absorbed antisera prepared against heat-killed suspensions of a coagulase-negative staphylococcus and of a micrococcus were used in a slide-agglutination test. A collection of 176 coagulase-negative aerobic cocci, from which Staphylococcus aureus had been excluded, was classified into staphylococci and micrococci by means of the test for anaerobic utilization of glucose.
