*  The Nordic model for consumer and customer satisfaction : Policy report

The key element in consumer policy is to create the best possible conditions for consumers: The best conditions with regard to consumer protection and rights, but also in relation to the opportunity for consumers to choose between an ever expanding range of alternatives on a transparent basis.There is a long tradition of creating good conditions for consumers in the Nordic countries. However, having a good baseline must not be used as an excuse for politicians, authorities or the business community to rest on their laurels. Good conditions for consumers benefit the individual consumer, but they also help ensure that Nordic businesses are highly competitive. These are characteristics and strengths we need to build on. If the best possible conditions are to be ensured, it is of course crucially important to know what conditions consumers actually regard as significant. It is important to focus on those areas that have the greatest impact on consumer satisfaction. It is important to be able to allocate

*  504 Plan Services - Cullman County School System - District...

Section 504 is part of a federal civil rights law known as the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This law specifically prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities and guarantees them a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). Discrimination, as defined in Section 504, is the failure to provide students with disabilities the same opportunity to benefit from education programs, services, or activities as provided to their non-disabled peers. Therefore, schools cannot exclude students with disabilities from facilities, programs, benefits, activities, or services that are provided to students without disabilities. Schools must make sure that all students receive equal access to educational opportunities.. A school-aged student is a disabled student under Section 504 for purposes of FAPE if the student: 1. Has a physical or mental impairment. The determination of whether a student has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity must be made on the ...

*  Federal File: New job for Bennett; Special favors - Education Week

Appropriations bills often include favors for schools located in influential lawmakers' districts. But Congressional largesse in this year's bills apparently was limited to guarantees for several school systems dependent on impact aid.. The Education Department spending bill, for example, permits the Hatboro Horsham public schools in Horsham, Pa., to receive funding in the current fiscal year under a program for districts with land that was bought by the government after 1938. To be eligible, the land must have constituted at least 10 percent of the area's property-tax base at the time of purchase.. The Pennsylvania district was declared eligible in 1943. But a few years ago, auditors decided that the property assessment on which the district's application had been based was incorrect, said John Forkenbrock, executive director of the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools.. The district has appealed, but needed Congressional intervention to claim its 1991 funds, which Mr. Forkenbrock ...

*  The Bright Libertarian: March 2011

Speaking for myself, I became a teacher because I loved the subject matter (science) and I thought I could share that love and enthusiasm with others. The idea of teaching sounded good to me as an undergrad, because some of my previous teachers seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Who would not want a job that they enjoyed? That was my primary motivation. In order to earn the best salary and benefits I was attracted to the public school system simply out of rational self-interest. This meant I had to join a union (we called it a Federation - OSSTF) and I will admit I felt uncomfortable about the whole thing except the teaching. Most of the time I was able to dismiss the fact that I had a government job, and I was able put aside my philosophical and political beliefs. The worst times were when contract bargaining occurred, or the union supported some group/party that I did not support. There was strike action and work-to-rule action that I did not support, and that I actively undermined. I ...

Could those students Superintendent Tyree wants to prosecute for "truancy" be sick because of black mold? ...

*  Cities News Roundup - Education Week

A bill that would give the mayor and city council of Philadelphia control of the city's financially beleaguered school system has won the support of the Pennsylvania State House and has been sent to the Senate.

The bill, which passed in a 169-to-24 vote on March 24, would abolish the city's school board and replace it with a Commission on Public Education whose members would be appointed by the mayor. The commission would be empowered, under the proposal, to select a new school superintendent with the approval of the mayor.

*  UKMSA | Supporting tomorrow's doctors | University

This year Southampton Medical Society has been engrossed in its constituents, offering more to our members than ever before whilst upholding our thriving traditions. Twice weekly activities and a new and improved welfare system are just a few of the ways we have improved links with our members this year, as well as charity work and sports fixtures which connect us with our local community. From our early weeks of tenure we wanted to make an impact as a committee, and creating a new Medsoc brand was the perfect way to achieve this. This logo creation became a competition and our members were invited to submit their designs, and as a happy bi-product we were able to minimise cost. Throughout the year now, whatever we did, people easily recognised that Medsoc were a part of it, and helped promote us as one of the biggest and liveliest societies in the union.. In order to respond to the diverse community of Medsoc, two new positions were created this year; Events Manager and International ...
