*  Japan Airlines - Wikipedia
In 2009, Japan Airlines suffered steep financial losses, despite remaining Asia's largest airline by revenue.[41] As a result, the airline embarked on staff cuts and route cutbacks in an effort to reduce costs.[41][42] The carrier also received a ¥100 billion through capital injection and credit from the Japanese government as part of the proposed bankruptcy.[43] In September 2009, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism formed a task force aimed at aiding a corporate turnaround at JAL, which examined various cost-cutting and strategic partnership proposals.[44]. One proposal considered was to merge JAL with ANA, which would create a single larger international airline and replace Japan Airlines International; however, media reports suggested that this proposal would be opposed by ANA given its comparatively better financial performance as an independent carrier.[44] The task force also examined possible partnerships with foreign carriers.[44]. After weeks of ...

Area 51 is a military base, and a remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base. It is located in the southern portion of Nevada in the western United States, 83 miles (133 km) north-northwest of downtown Las Vegas. Situated at its center, on the southern shore of Groom Lake, is a large secretive military airfield. The base's primary purpose is to support development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems.[1][2]. The base lies within the United States Air Force's vast Nevada Test and Training Range. Although the facilities at the range are managed by the 99th Air Base Wing at Nellis Air Force Base, the Groom facility appears to be run as an adjunct of the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert, around 186 miles (300 km) southwest of Groom, and as such the base is known as Air Force Flight Test Center (Detachment 3).[3][4]. Though the name Area 51 is used in official CIA documentation, other names used for the facility include ...

The town was built beside the railroad currently owned by CSX Transportation. In its heyday, Verbena had two hotels, a bank, a post office, and a general store. *  National Transportation Noise Map | Bureau of Transportation Statistics
A much smaller segment of the U.S. resident population has the potential to be exposed to higher levels of aviation and Interstate highway noise. Less than one-tenth of a percent of the population could potentially experience noise levels of 80 decibels or more, equivalent to the noise level of a garbage disposal (See Table).. The purpose of the noise map is to facilitate the tracking of trends in transportation-related noise, by mode, and collectively for multiple transportation modes. The data allow viewing the national picture of potential exposure to aviation and highway noise. The data also allow viewing of the potential exposure at the state or county level.. The National Transportation Noise Map will be an addition to the National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD), a set of nationwide geographic databases of transportation facilities, networks, and associated infrastructure available from the BTS Geospatial Data Catalog. The layers will be updated on an annual ...

*  CMG Showing Promise For Spacesuit Stability | AWIN content from Aviation Week
HOUSTON - Control moment gyros (CMGs) have stabilized spacecraft, large and small, for decades. Now researchers at MIT and the Draper Laboratory believe the rapidly spinning devices can do the same for astronauts working in weightlessness.. The efforts, which are receiving $600,000 in NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) funding, could improve efficiency by adding attitude control to astronauts wearing jet packs or introduce an artificial "downward" force inside a spacecraft that improves dexterity while stemming the bone and muscle loss and other ill effects that accompany weeks and months of weightlessness.. There are potential terrestrial applications as well. Small CMGs worn on the body like a personal digital assistant (PDA), could become a part of physical rehabilitation strategies or improve the gait and stability of the elderly.. "Outside of the space station or outside a body like an asteroid, astronauts would be able to use their spacesuits as a natural work platform, as opposed to ...

*  Iceland Volcano Eruption Continues, Volcanic Ash May Hit UK, France, Spain - PlanetSave
Update: (Tuesday, May 24, 9:35am EST) here: Iceland Volcano Causes Flights of Thousands to be Cancelled.. The Grimsvotn volcano continues to erupt at the same levels as it has since Saturday, the eruption is reportedly "much bigger and more intensive" than Eyjafjallajökull eruption last year and 10 times bigger than Grimvotn's eruption in 2004. However, it is not expected to have nearly the same effect on air traffic as the Eyjafjallajökull eruption (and the 2004 Gromsvotn eruption had little effect). Why?. For one, the volcanic ash is apparently heavier, which makes it fall to the ground faster (spread less). Secondly, the air patterns are more changeable and the ash is less likely to be blown into Europe as much as Eyjafjallajökull's ash was. And thirdly, the aviation industry has updated its volcanic ash safety procedures and requirements for such events since last year and should cut down on the impact to flights tremendously even if ash does fly into Europe.. Based on current 5-day ...

*  Open Photogrammetry | Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering | Western Michigan University
Photogrammetric techniques have been used for measuring the important physical quantities in both ground and flight testing including aeroelastic deformation, attitude, position, shape and dynamics of objects such as wind tunnel models, flight vehicles, rotating blades and large space structures. The distinct advantage of photogrammetric measurement is that it is a non-contact, global measurement technique. Although the general principles of photogrammetry are well known particularly in topographic and aerial survey, photogrammetric techniques require special adaptation of aerospace applications. This review provides a comprehensive and systematic summary of photogrammetric techniques for aerospace applications based on diverse sources. It is useful mainly for aerospace engineers who want to use photogrammetric techniques, but also gives a general introduction for photogrammetrists and computer vision scientists to new applications..
