STUDY OBJECTIVE: The characteristics of some populations make epidemiological measurement extremely difficult. The objective of this study is to identify risk factors that explain variation among incidence densities and proportions of one occupational illness, green tobacco sickness, within one such special population, Latino migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States. Reported cases of green tobacco sickness (GTS) in tobacco field workers in Kentucky were reviewed. There were 27 cases reported to the Occupational Health Nurses in Agricultural Communities project in a 2 week period in September, 1992. Inpatient and emergency department medical records at five hospitals were reviewed for the period 1 May through 2 October; there were 55 persons in whom GTS had be

Tobacco (Nicotina tobaccum) can generate a large amount of inexpensive biomass more efficiently. The current research is focused on using green tobacco as a feedstock for ethanol production. Acid pretreatment of green tobacco leaves increases efficiency of saccharification by releasing high amount of sugar monomers from complex polymer. It is easiest way to produce bio-ethanol from green tobacco leaves by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as there is no need of any additional supporting media.. ...

*  Green tobacco sickness | Tobacco Control
The table summarises what is currently known about GTS. The toxic agent, exposure environment, exposure attributes, symptoms, illness onset, duration of illness, treatment, risk reduction, potential public health responses, and economic impact are identified. The magnitude of GTS is not well understood. Unfortunately, surveillance systems have been instituted in only a few states and most published research on GTS is descriptive studies. Treatment is discussed rarely and the magnitude of GTS has not been assessed in sufficient detail. Much of the research cites the same few studies completed many years ago, most of which were conducted in the United States. As the tobacco industry expands production capabilities to the developing world, greater numbers of workers will be exposed to GTS and thus international studies of GTS are badly needed. For example, worldwide output of flue-cured tobacco has nearly tripled over the past 30 years, although the American contribution to the world market has ...

*  Health-related Inequities Among Hired Farm Workers and the Resurgence of Labor-intensive Agriculture - IssueLab
This paper's goal is to describe the current health status of the farm labor workforce from a national perspective and to suggest future directions for interventions. Ideally, data would be derived from nationally representative cross-sectional studies of hired farm workers that included comprehensive physical examinations by third-party medical professionals. Because such national data does not exist, it was necessary to consider the few available statewide crosssectional studies that included medical examinations and to forge a national perspective from them. For this paper, a hired farm worker is a person who is employed to perform tasks on a farm to directly produce an agricultural commodity intended for sale. Workers engaged in off-farm packing, handling or processing of farm products are not included. Hired livestock farm workers are considered on an equal basis with hired crop farm workers. Among the latter are ...

*  the FARMER'S wife: 2015
Almost 1 1/2 years later, we welcomed our third child, Rochelle. When we found out we were pregnant for the third time (of course, always planned), we were SO excited/thankful. Since the doctors told us that there was ,1% chance of what happened with Lamar, to happen again, since it didn't come from Shane or myself, we had no fear having more babies. Well, we were definitely shocked/surprised when we found out Rochelle had Full Trisomy 13 and was also "incompatible with life". We didn't know what to think, or why God had placed another baby that was not going to live, inside of me. What we have learned from Rochelle's experience, has taught us so much. From the moment Rochelle entered this world, she was a fighter. She took us on the fastest (2 months and 1 day) roller coaster of our life. We couldn't believe that God blessed us with 2 months with our beautiful girl, with so many obstacles against her, every day. Saying good-bye was one of the hardest things we have all had to do in our life. ...

EU - Measures to boost green farming and offer additional support to young farmers are part of a provisional agreement between Parliament, Council and the Commission to reform the EU's agriculture policy after 2014. The deal would also boost farmers organisations' bargaining position when negotiating prices and cut red tape for spending EU funds.

*  Conquer Club • View topic - Limit point exchange for cooks to reduce harvesting in quads
FarangDemon, it seems that you have decided that farming must be stopped at any cost and that however we choose to stop it is automatically justified. I disagree. Farming is a problem, almost everyone agrees to that, but it is not nearly bad enough to justify limiting cooks' freedom to play on whatever map they want. If cooks don't want to play, and likely be farmed, on certain maps, they don't have to. Unlike new recruits, they have the experience to know about farming and avoid farmers if they want to. The only time this suggestion would have any effect, then, is when a cook does want to play on a difficult map, knowing that he may be farmed. Thus this suggestion will only stop the farming of those cooks who are willing to risk being farmed. With this in mind, my question is what's in it for the cooks? It seems that the only beneficiaries of this would be high ranking non-farmers who could move up a few spots on the scoreboard by taking away the cooks' right to play where they want ...

*  A beast, an angel and a madman: April 2009
And how awesome is it that the face of farming is going to be changing? Right now, the farming community has a bad rep. When you think of farmers, you think of redneck, inbred, dim witted field jockeys who speak slow and wear a constant look of confusion on their faces. Not for long! Fabulous Farmers are on the way! I mean, gay people got their name because they seem so damn happy--which, before they stole it, was the actual meaning of the word gay. The Fabulous Farmers will change the face of rural America. Say goodbye to the bland red barns you used to see while travelling through Iowa folks. Instead of seeing farm after farm that look the exact same, prepare yourself for barn watching to see what crazy color combination and decorative accoutraments those crazy Fabulous Farmers have come up with now ...

*  Avian flu nightmare
There's one more item that I think you should insert in the "Source of Outbreaks" procedure. Frankly, it is not PC to discuss this item, but it must be dealt with head on for the sake of human lives and uncompromised science. Ignorant and profit driven Chinese farmers are creating a viral monster that could wipe out millions. By treating sick birds with antibiotics meant for *humans*, the virus is rapidly mutating and assimilating at an accelerated rate. This greed and myopism is very offensive because of what's at stake. Chinese farmers are way too friendly and cavalier with their animals, in general. I don't want to pay for that stupidity with my life. Does anyone know if Asian governments are seeking to regulate these farming/treatment practices? Or is "too be rich is glorious" still the overriding party line ...

*  Juicing and Raw Foods: million farmers are now suing Monsanto
The practice of using renewal seeds dates back to ancient times, but Monsanto seeks to collect massive royalties and put an end to the practice. Why? Because Monsanto owns the very patent to the genetically modified seed, and is charging the farmers not only for the original crops, but the later harvests as well. Eventually, the royalties compound and many farmers begin to struggle with even keeping their farm afloat. It is for this reason that India slammed Monsanto with groundbreaking 'biopiracy' charges in an effort to stop Monsanto from 'patenting life ...

*  Shifting from health care to medical technocracy - News - MailTribune.com - Medford, OR
In our farming community of about 500 people, my father was never 'Mr. Edwards.' To everyone, including the doctor, he was 'Guy.' Doc Hansen was a friend. People knew each other, and cared.My father was also a healer, not from any technical training, but it was just the way he was. When someone was hurting, sometimes they wanted Guy. Caring is the beginning of healing, and it's free.It was 1945, and I was 14 years old. One evening I caught a finger in a machine, and it was badly chopped up. My
