Central nervous system sensitization (CNSS) refers to an increased responsiveness of the central nervous system (CNS) to normal or subthreshold afferent input, leading to exaggerated pain and other symptoms. This heightened sensitivity is due to changes in the brain and spinal cord at various levels, including altered ion channel function, neurotransmitter release, and synaptic plasticity. CNSS can occur following tissue injury, inflammation, or nerve damage and may contribute to the development and maintenance of chronic pain conditions.
