Do patients choose physicians of their own race? (1/52)

This study seeks to determine whether minority Americans tend to see physicians of their own race as a matter of choice or simply because minority physicians are more conveniently located within predominantly minority communities. Using data from the Commonwealth Fund 1994 National Comparative Survey of Minority Health Care, we found that black and Hispanic Americans sought care from physicians of their own race because of personal preference and language, not solely because of geographic accessibility. As minority populations continue to grow, the demand for minority physicians is likely to increase. Keeping up with this demand will require medical school admissions policies and physician workforce planning to include explicit strategies to increase the supply of underrepresented minority physicians.  (+info)

Caring relationships: an investment in health? (2/52)

Although the US has created the most expensive, technologically advanced medical system in the world, health outcomes are not commensurate with investment. The author argues that providers and policy makers have neglected the effect of human relationships on health, citing research showing that better relationships lead to better health. The author concludes with recommendations for improving public health by supporting society's investments in social capital.  (+info)

Moving forward: addressing the health of Asian American and Pacific Islander women. (3/52)

Little is known about the health of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women, a rapidly growing population marked by diverse sociodemographic characteristics, health needs, and access to and use of health services. This commentary provides broad recommendations for research, program development, and policy development based on the first-ever White House Initiative report on AAPIs. These recommendations address the issues of data, access, civil rights, community capacity, and the need to recognize ethnic subgroups among the AAPI population. Reflecting on the events of the past year, the recommendations provide direction for public health to address the health and well-being of AAPI women.  (+info)

Reconceptualizing native women's health: an "indigenist" stress-coping model. (4/52)

This commentary presents an "indigenist" model of Native women's health, a stress-coping paradigm that situates Native women's health within the larger context of their status as a colonized people. The model is grounded in empirical evidence that traumas such as the "soul wound" of historical and contemporary discrimination among Native women influence health and mental health outcomes. The preliminary model also incorporates cultural resilience, including as moderators identity, enculturation, spiritual coping, and traditional healing practices. Current epidemiological data on Native women's general health and mental health are reconsidered within the framework of this model.  (+info)

Public health needs and scientific opportunities in research on Latinas. (5/52)

Much of the research on women's health has not deepened our understanding of health issues affecting Latinas. Yet integration of research on Latinas into the women's health agenda is important for at least 2 reasons. First, critical public health issues facing Latinas must be better understood if effective interventions designed to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health are to be developed and implemented. Second, studies on the health of Latinas represent unique opportunities to advance scientific understandings of underlying processes relevant to the health of other populations. Such research can further our knowledge of the processes underlying cultural adaptation and negotiation of changing sex roles and how these issues affect the health of women. Critical research and empirical approaches that help us to understand how race, ethnicity, sex, and class shape the health of Latinas will inform broader public health issues.  (+info)

Racial residential segregation: a fundamental cause of racial disparities in health. (6/52)

Racial residential segregation is a fundamental cause of racial disparities in health. The physical separation of the races by enforced residence in certain areas is an institutional mechanism of racism that was designed to protect whites from social interaction with blacks. Despite the absence of supportive legal statutes, the degree of residential segregation remains extremely high for most African Americans in the United States. The authors review evidence that suggests that segregation is a primary cause of racial differences in socioeconomic status (SES) by determining access to education and employment opportunities. SES in turn remains a fundamental cause of racial differences in health. Segregation also creates conditions inimical to health in the social and physical environment. The authors conclude that effective efforts to eliminate racial disparities in health must seriously confront segregation and its pervasive consequences.  (+info)

Profile of a leader: unearthing Ethel Johns's "buried" commitment to racial equality, 1925. (7/52)

In 1925, Canadian nurse leader Ethel Johns was hired by the Rockefeller Foundation to study the status of black women in nursing in the United States. Despite the acknowledged excellence of her report, the study was shelved. It remained "buried" in the basement of the Rockefeller headquarters for almost 60 years until American historian Darlene Clark Hine discovered it there in the 1980s. The aim of this article is to extend current understandings of Johns based on this and other evidence not accessible to her biographer in 1973. The discussion will illuminate her commitment to social equality by highlighting the 1925 report that perceived and articulated the racist character of relations between white institutions and black nurses in an era when few others would do so. It seems vital that this study be recognized as a focal point in Johns's outstanding nursing career, and that her success in leadership be acknowledged as inextricably linked with her passion for justice and equality.  (+info)

Racial segregation and county level intentional injury in Pennsylvania: analysis of hospital discharge data for 1997-1999. (8/52)

STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether high levels of racial segregation are associated with high county level intentional injury rates. DESIGN: Multiple linear regression was used to assess the association between county racial segregation (measured by the Gini coefficient) and intentional injury rates. Multicollinearity was assessed with Eigenvalues and condition indices. SETTING: State of Pennsylvania. PATIENTS: County level intentional injury rates for 1995 to 1997 were calculated from hospital discharge data. MAIN RESULTS: After controlling for other known county level risk factors, higher levels of racial segregation in a county were significantly related to higher intentional injury rates. Multicollinearity was not a problem. Population size and density, family stability and median income, together with the percentage male, unemployed, in poverty, divorced men, and high school graduates of the county were controlled. CONCLUSIONS: Racial segregation is an important factor in the rate of intentional injury in a community. These results may be important for municipal and state agencies when developing public policies to prevent violence and promote racial integration.  (+info)

I'm sorry for any confusion, but "race relations" is not a term that has a medical definition. It generally refers to the relationship and interactions between different racial groups in a society, including issues of discrimination, prejudice, and social justice. The study of these relationships can intersect with fields such as medical anthropology or sociology, where researchers might examine how systemic racism impacts health outcomes for certain populations. However, "race relations" itself is not a term used within the field of medicine to describe a specific condition or phenomenon.
