A concept, developed in 1983 under the aegis of and supported by the National Library of Medicine under the name of Integrated Academic Information Management Systems, to provide professionals in academic health sciences centers and health sciences institutions with convenient access to an integrated and comprehensive network of knowledge. It addresses a wide cross-section of users from administrators and faculty to students and clinicians and has applications to planning, clinical and managerial decision-making, teaching, and research. It provides access to various types of clinical, management, educational, etc., databases, as well as to research and bibliographic databases. In August 1992 the name was changed from Integrated Academic Information Management Systems to Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems to reflect use beyond the academic milieu.

Interlibrary cooperation: from ILL to IAIMS and beyond. (1/62)

A recent solicitation over the MEDLIB-L e-mail discussion list revealed over thirty diverse examples of hospital library-based interlibrary cooperative initiatives currently underway. Many are familiar and have been featured in the professional literature. Most go unreported and unrecognized however, comprising invisible resource-sharing infrastructures that hospital librarians painstakingly piece together in order to provide their clients with expanded service options. This paper, drawing from the MEDLIB-L survey as well as descriptions in the published literature, provides a broad overview of such recent interlibrary cooperative efforts. Examples include interlibrary loan networks, collective purchasing initiatives, holder-of-record or union catalog access agreements, arrangements to provide e-mail and Internet access, and consortia to share electronic resources. Examples were chosen based on the initiatives' diversity of participants, and represent a wide range of locations across the United States. Such initiatives focus on local, statewide, or regional collaboration, and several involve partnerships between academic medical center libraries and regional hospital libraries. An early example of a hospital-based interlibrary cooperative IAIMS effort is described, pointing to future possibilities involving the Internet and regional hospital system intranets.  (+info)

IAIMS and JCAHO: implications for hospital librarians. Integrated Academic Information Management Systems. Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. (2/62)

The roles of hospital librarians have evolved from keeping print materials to serving as a focal point for information services and structures within the hospital. Concepts that emerged from the Integrated Academic Information Management Systems (IAIMS) as described in the Matheson Report and the 1994 Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards have combined to propel hospital libraries into many new roles and functions. This paper will review the relationship of the two frameworks, provide a view of their commonalities, and establish the advantages of both for hospital librarianship as a profession.  (+info)

Integrating knowledge resources at the point of care: opportunities for librarians. (3/62)

Health sciences librarians at the University of Washington (UW) are partners in the evolution of Internet-based clinical information systems for two medical centers, University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, as well as the UW Primary Care Network clinics. Librarians lead information resource and systems development projects and play a variety of roles including facilitator, publisher, integrator, and educator. These efforts have been coordinated with parallel development efforts by the Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems (IAIMS) clinical informatics group in developing electronic medical record systems and clinical decision support tools. The outcome is MINDscape, a very heavily used Web view of the patient medical record with tightly integrated knowledge resources as well as numerous Web-accessible information resources and tools. The goal of this article is to provide a case study of librarian involvement in institutional information systems development at UW and to illustrate the variety of roles that librarians can assume in hospital settings.  (+info)

Translating national childhood immunization guidelines to a computer-based reminder recall system within an immunization registry. (4/62)

To translate national childhood immunization guidelines to a computer-based reminder recall system, hierarchical system architecture design and combined approach of tabular and procedural knowledge representation are taken. Nested branches with hierarchical combinations of single antecedent variables are used to avoid logical incompleteness, redundancy and inconsistency. Mapping to the local electronic medical vocabulary is implemented to facilitate the integration with the local information system architecture. 26 second-level modules with 195 original branches and 121 final branches after pruning are encoded. 99.67% of the reminders are confirmed to be correct by SQL query.  (+info)

IAIMS: an interview with Dick West. Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems. Interview by Joan S Ash and Frances E Johnson. (5/62)

Richard T. West, IAIMS (Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems) Program Officer at the National Library of Medicine for 13 years, reflects on the origin, development, effectiveness, and future of IAIMS efforts. He dwells on the changes that have taken place as the concept of IAIMS has evolved from a technology-based to an organization-based level of integration. The role of IAIMS in patient care, education, and research is discussed, along with the role of the librarian in the implementation of IAIMS programs. He sees a need for training for librarians, informaticians, and others in preparation for these efforts and for the development of academic reward systems that encourage them. He expresses a desire for those working in information technology in hospitals to gain a clearer understanding of IAIMS, because the concept fits hospitals as well as academic health science centers. He exhorts informaticians to bring to reality the futuristic fantasies of a new information world.  (+info)

Health information outreach: the land-grant mission. (6/62)

Service to the state is one of the core principles of the land-grant mission. This concept of service is also fundamental to a significant number of outreach activities in academic health sciences libraries, particularly those libraries affiliated with the public land-grant universities. The Dana Medical Library at the University of Vermont has a lengthy tradition of outreach to health care providers and health care consumers of the State of Vermont. Building on the foundation of the land-grant institution-which grew out of federal legislation introduced in the mid nineteenth century by Justin Morrill, Vermont's congressional representative--the Dana Medical Library has based its outreach activities on its dedication of service to the state in the promotion of healthy citizens through information dissemination in support of health care delivery. Reengineering library services designed to meet the specific information needs of its diverse clientele, partnering with disparate health care organizations, and relying on fees for service to expand its outreach activities, the Dana Medical Library has redefined the concept of health information outreach for the new millennium.  (+info)

University of Wisconsin IAIMS planning: organizational challenges within a faculty governance model. (7/62)

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Health Sciences Schools are currently in the planning stage of developing an Integrated Advanced Information Management System (IAIMS). The planning phase of this project attends to the unique opportunities that are found at the flagship campus of a large state university system. Statewide teaching and research initiatives and accelerated campus-level capital development challenge the planners to create an IAIMS plan that anticipates an emerging health science environment. Additionally, UW-Madison has an organizational culture with a strong tradition of faculty governance, which provides a very desirable and flexible decision-making environment for a cross-discipline collaborative information management initiative. Development of a shared IAIMS vision conflicts with a governance model that most directly supports intradepartmental decision-making. The challenge presented here for an IAIMS initiative has less to do with hard wiring a technical infrastructure and more to do with increased stakeholder cooperation in a highly decentralized organization with autonomous information systems.  (+info)

Republican Scientific-Medical Library, The Republic of Armenia: progress and programs. (8/62)

In 1990, the Republican Scientific-Medical Library (RSML) of the Ministry of Health of Armenia in collaboration with the Fund for Armenian Relief created a vision of a national library network supported by information technology. This vision incorporated four goals: (1) to develop a national resource collection of biomedical literature accessible to all health professionals, (2) to develop a national network for access to bibliographic information, (3) to develop a systematic mechanism for sharing resources, and (4) to develop a national network of health sciences libraries. During the last decade, the RSML has achieved significant progress toward all four goals and has realized its vision of becoming a fully functional national library. The RSML now provides access to the literature of the health sciences including access to the Armenian medical literature, provides education and training to health professionals and health sciences librarians, and manages a national network of libraries of the major health care institutions in Armenia. The RSML is now able to provide rapid access to the biomedical literature and train health professionals and health sciences librarians in Armenia in information system use. This paper describes the evolution of the RSML and how it was accomplished.  (+info)

I'm sorry for any confusion, but "Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems" is not a recognized medical term or concept in and of itself. However, I can provide some insight into what the individual terms might mean in a healthcare context:

1. **Integrated:** This generally refers to the combination of different systems or components so that they work together as a unified whole. In healthcare, an integrated system might involve the seamless sharing of data and functionality between electronic health records, imaging systems, laboratory information systems, and other technology platforms.

2. **Advanced:** This term is somewhat subjective, but in a technological context, it often refers to systems that employ cutting-edge techniques or technologies. In healthcare, an advanced information management system might use artificial intelligence, machine learning, or natural language processing to improve data analysis, patient care, or operational efficiency.

3. **Information Management Systems:** These are systems designed to acquire, process, store, and disseminate information. In healthcare, these systems can include electronic health records, picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) for medical imaging, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and many others.

So, an "Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems" in a broad healthcare context could refer to a system or suite of systems that combine cutting-edge technology with seamless integration to manage health data and improve patient care. However, it's important to note that this is not a standard medical term, and its exact meaning could vary depending on the specific context.

I'm happy to help! However, it looks like you are asking for a medical definition of "Information Management." It is important to note that "Information Management" is not a medical term per se, but rather a general term used in many fields, including healthcare. Here's a possible definition of Information Management in the context of healthcare:

Information Management (in healthcare) refers to the systematic processes and practices used to collect, store, distribute, retrieve, and dispose of health information in an accurate, confidential, timely, and efficient manner. It involves the use of technology, policies, procedures, and personnel to ensure that health information is accessible, secure, and used appropriately for patient care, research, quality improvement, and other purposes. Effective Information Management is critical for ensuring high-quality healthcare, improving patient outcomes, and complying with legal and regulatory requirements related to privacy and security of health information.

I'm sorry for any confusion, but "Management Information Systems" (MIS) is not a medical term. It is a term commonly used in the field of information systems and technology to describe:

"A computer-based system that provides information to support managerial decision-making at all levels of an organization." (Source: "Management Information Systems" article, *Encyclopedia Britannica*)

In a healthcare setting, MIS can be used to manage various aspects of patient care and administrative tasks. This can include maintaining electronic health records, managing scheduling and billing systems, tracking inventory, analyzing patient data for quality improvement, and more.
