The genus Lepus, in the family Leporidae, order LAGOMORPHA. Hares are born above ground, fully furred, and with their eyes and ears open. In contrast with RABBITS, hares have 24 chromosome pairs.
An order of small mammals comprising two families, Ochotonidae (pikas) and Leporidae (RABBITS and HARES). Head and body length ranges from about 125 mm to 750 mm. Hares and rabbits have a short tail, and the pikas lack a tail. Rabbits are born furless and with both eyes and ears closed. HARES are born fully haired with eyes and ears open. All are vegetarians. (From Nowak, Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p539-41)
The FERTILIZATION of an OVUM that takes place when a FETUS is already present in the UTERUS. Superfetation results in an unusual PREGNANCY with fetuses of different ages and sizes developing in utero simultaneously.
A species in the ORTHOBUNYAVIRUS genus of the family BUNYAVIRIDAE. Serotypes are found in temperate and arctic regions and each is closely associated with a single species of vector mosquito. The vertebrate hosts are usually small mammals but several serotypes infect humans.
An order of insects comprising the sucking lice, which are blood-sucking ectoparasites of mammals. Recognized families include: Echinphthiriidae, Haematopinidae, and Pediculidae. The latter contains the medically important genera affecting humans: PEDICULUS and PHTHIRUS.
An opisthobranch mollusk of the order Anaspidea. It is used frequently in studies of nervous system development because of its large identifiable neurons. Aplysiatoxin and its derivatives are not biosynthesized by Aplysia, but acquired by ingestion of Lyngbya (seaweed) species.

Molecular phylogeny of Japanese Leporidae, the Amami rabbit Pentalagus furnessi, the Japanese hare Lepus brachyurus, and the mountain hare Lepus timidus, inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequences. (1/58)

We determined mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and cytochrome b (cyt b) gene sequences in three leporid species of Japan, the Amami rabbit Pentalagus furnessi from the Ryukyu Islands, the Japanese hare Lepus brachyurus from Honshu, and a Japanese form of the mountain hare Lepus timidus ainu from Hokkaido. We compared the sequences with those of other taxa of leporids available in databases. Phylogenetic trees of the 12S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the lineage of P. furnessi diversified during the generic radiation of the leporids at an ancient time, which was estimated to have been the middle Miocene. Cyt-b gene trees revealed that the lineage of L. brachyurus branched off at an early stage in the speciation of Lepus, probably at the beginning of the Pliocene. The cyt b sequences of L. t. ainu were somewhat distinct from those of continental conspecific populations; this lineage divergence is likely to have occurred during the middle or late Pleistocene. The results show that the three regions of the Japanese archipelago, Ryukyu, Honshu-Shikoku-Kyushu, and Hokkaido, now preserve their own leporid taxa, each with a different extent of genetic endemicity. It is possible that the zoogeographic traits of the Japanese leporids are a consequence of the evolutionary dynamics of leporids in East Asia, in that the radiation centers of leporids are likely to have shifted from tropical, through temperate, to arctic zones.  (+info)

Growth and architecture of small honey mesquites under jackrabbit browsing: overcoming the disadvantage of being eaten. (2/58)

Browsing is an important mortality factor in seedlings and small plants. However, the induced changes in the architecture of plant survivors may influence subsequent browsing, opening the possibility of compensating for the damage done. How jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) browsing affects the growth and architecture of small individuals of honey mesquite, Prosopis glandulosa var. torreyana, a tree/shrub that produces spines at every node, was explored. Naturally established mesquites of unknown age were selected in one site, and 2-year-old mesquites were transplanted in another site. In both cases, half of them were exposed to jackrabbits and the other half were excluded as controls. After 4 years, shoot production (height, length and number of derived shoots) and plant growth (height and cover) increased 1.4-2.5-fold in naturally established controls relative to exposed plants, depending on the measured variable. In the transplant experiment, the increases were 2.8-7.1-fold in controls relative to exposed plants 2 years after initiation of the experiment. The net loss of biomass in treatment vs. control plants in these experiments suggests a negative response to browsing which has been defined as under-compensation. Alternative architectures in honey mesquites were evident at the end of the exclusion experiments: controls had long branches and an extended crown cover, while exposed plants had short branches and a compact crown cover. Results indicated that mesquites were able to grow under browser pressure by packing many stems in a compact matrix armed with spines and producing one or more shoots tall and wide enough to escape from jackrabbits.  (+info)

Snow conditions may create an invisible barrier for lynx. (3/58)

The dynamics of Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) abundance are geographically structured according to the influence of large-scale climatic regimes. Here we demonstrate that this structuring matches zones of differential snow conditions, in particular surface hardness, as determined by the frequency of winter warm spells. Through a modified functional response curve, we show that various features of the snow may influence lynx interaction with its main prey species, the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus). This study highlights the importance of snow, and exemplifies how large-scale climatic fluctuations can mechanistically influence population biological patterns.  (+info)

Long-term patterns in European brown hare population dynamics in Denmark: effects of agriculture, predation and climate. (4/58)

BACKGROUND: In Denmark and many other European countries, harvest records suggest a marked decline in European brown hare numbers, a decline often attributed to the agricultural practice. In the present study, we analyse the association between agricultural land-use, predator abundance and winter severity on the number of European brown hares harvested in Denmark in the years 1955 through 2000. RESULTS: Winter cereals had a significant negative association with European brown hare numbers. In contrast to this, root crop area was positively related to their numbers. Remaining crop categories were not significantly associated with the European brown hare numbers, though grass out of rotation tended to be positively related. The areas of root crop production and of grass out of rotation have been reduced by approximately 80% and 50%, respectively, while the area of winter cereals has increased markedly (>70%). However, European brown hare numbers were primarily negatively associated with the number of red fox. Finally, we also found a positive association between mild winters and European brown hare numbers. CONCLUSION: The decline of Danish European brown hare populations can mainly be attributed to predation by red fox, but the development in agricultural land-use during the last 45 years have also affected the European brown hare numbers negatively. Additionally, though mild winters were beneficial to European brown hares, the increasing frequency of mild winters during the study period was insufficient to reverse the negative population trend.  (+info)

Tracing the origin and co-phylogeny of the caliciviruses. (5/58)

Caliciviruses infect a wide range of mammalian hosts and include the genus Norovirus, the major cause of food-borne viral gastroenteritis in humans. Using publicly available sequence data and phylogenetic analysis tools, the origins and virus-host co-phylogeny of these viruses were investigated. Here, evidence is presented in support of host switching by caliciviruses, but showing that zoonotic transfer does not appear to have occurred in the history of these viruses. The age or demography of the caliciviruses cannot yet be estimated with any firm degree of support, but further studies of this family, as new dated sequences become available, could provide key information of importance to human health and in understanding the emergence of food-borne disease.  (+info)

Assessment of diagnostic tools for eradication of bovine tuberculosis in cattle co-infected with Mycobacterium bovis and M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. (6/58)

The intradermal tuberculin (IDTB) test and the interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) assay are used worldwide for detection of bovine tuberculosis in cattle, but little is known about the effect of co-infecting agents on the performance of these diagnostic tests. This report describes a field trial conducted in a cattle herd with dual infection (bovine tuberculosis and paratuberculosis) during 3.5 years. It has been based on a strategic approach encompassing serial parallel testing (comparative IDTB test, the IFN-gamma assay and serology of paratuberculosis) that was repeated 8 times over the period, and segregation of animals into two herds. The IDTB test detected 65.2% and the IFN-gamma test detected 69.6% of the Mycobacterium bovis culture-positive cattle. However, the IDTB test performed better during the first part of the trial, while the IFN-gamma test was the only method that detected infected animals during the following three samplings. The number of false positive reactors with the IDTB and/or the IFN-gamma tests was remarkably high compared to other reports, and could be caused by cross-reactivity with M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Also, the M. bovis isolates from cattle and wildlife from the same property were characterised using molecular techniques to disclose an epidemiological link. The IDTB test may not be appropriate to eradicate bovine tuberculosis in herds with dual mycobacterial infections. This report highlights the need to use several diagnostic techniques for the accurate detection of M. bovis infected animals in these herds.  (+info)

Spatial patterns of genetic diversity across European subspecies of the mountain hare, Lepus timidus L. (7/58)

Fossil evidence shows that populations of species that currently inhabit arctic and boreal regions were not isolated in refugia during glacial periods, but instead maintained populations across large areas of central Europe. These species commonly display little reduction in genetic diversity in northern areas of their range, in contrast to many temperate species. The mountain hare currently inhabits both temperate and arctic-boreal regions. We used nuclear microsatellite and mtDNA sequence data to examine population structure and alternate phylogeographic hypotheses for the mountain hare, that is, temperate type (lower genetic diversity in northern areas) and arctic-boreal type (high northern genetic diversity). Both data sets revealed concordant patterns. Highest allelic richness, expected heterozygosity and mtDNA haplotype diversity were identified in the most northerly subspecies, indicating that this species more closely maps to phylogeographic patterns observed in arctic-boreal rather than temperate species. With regard to population structure, the Alpine and Fennoscandian subspecies were most genetically similar (F(ST) approximately 0.1). These subspecies also clustered together on the mtDNA tree and were assigned with highest likelihood to a common Bayesian cluster. This is consistent with fossil evidence for intermediate populations in the central European plain, persisting well into the postglacial period. In contrast, the geographically close Scottish and Irish populations occupied separate Bayesian clusters, distinct clades on the mtDNA maximum likelihood tree and were genetically divergent from each other (F(ST) > 0.4) indicating the influence of genetic drift, long isolation (possibly dating from the late glacial era) and/or separate postglacial colonisation routes.  (+info)

Introgression of mountain hare (Lepus timidus) mitochondrial DNA into wild brown hares (Lepus europaeus) in Denmark. (8/58)

BACKGROUND: In Europe the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) exists in Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Finland, parts of the Alps and in Eastern Europe, but not in Denmark. Interspecific hybridization has been demonstrated between native Swedish mountain hares and introduced brown hares (Lepus europaeus). During the data collection in a study concerning Danish brown hares we identified 16 hares with a single very divergent haplotype. RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis shows that the divergent Danish haplotype is most closely related to the Swedish mountain hare. The frequency of Lepus timidus mtDNA haplotype in the Eastern Danish hare populations is estimated to 6%. CONCLUSION: In contrast to what is known, the Danish hare populations are not pure L. europaeus populations but include introgressed brown hares with Swedish L. timidus mtDNA. The most probable explanation of this is natural migration or translocation of introgressed brown hares from Sweden. The impurity of hare populations has implications for conservation and population genetics.  (+info)

I believe there might be some confusion in your question. "Hares" is a common name used to refer to certain types of fast-running mammals that belong to the family Leporidae and the genus Lepus. They are known for their long ears and powerful hind legs, which allow them to move quickly through open fields.

However, if you are referring to a medical term, it is possible that you may have misspelled the word. If you meant "hairs" instead of "hares," then I can provide you with a definition related to medicine.

In medical terms, hairs refer to the keratinous filaments that grow from follicles in the skin of mammals, including humans. They serve various functions, such as sensory perception, thermoregulation, and protection. Hair growth, structure, and distribution can also provide valuable diagnostic information for certain medical conditions.

Lagomorpha is an order of mammals that includes rabbits, hares, and pikas. They are herbivores with large incisors in the front of their mouths and a second pair of smaller incisors behind them. Lagomorpha is distinguished from other orders by its unique dental characteristics and the presence of two pairs of upper incisors. These animals are known for their high reproductive rates and are found worldwide, except for Antarctica and some islands.

Superfetation is an extremely rare medical condition where a second pregnancy occurs during an existing pregnancy. In this unusual case, a fertilized egg implants itself into the uterus while another embryo or fetus is already present in the womb, resulting in two separate gestational sacs. This phenomenon is not to be confused with superfecundation, which refers to the fertilization of two or more eggs from one menstrual cycle by different sexual partners. Superfetation is very unusual because it typically requires a woman to ovulate twice within a single menstrual cycle, and both eggs must then be fertilized and implanted at distinct times. This condition is not generally associated with human pregnancies due to the complex hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, which usually prevent further ovulation. However, superfetation has been reported in some animal species, such as cats, dogs, and marsupials.

There is no medical definition or specific virus named "Encephalitis Virus, California." However, there are several viruses that can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and some of them have been identified in California. Some examples include:

1. West Nile Virus: A mosquito-borne virus that is the most common cause of encephalitis in the United States, including California.
2. St. Louis Encephalitis Virus: Another mosquito-borne virus that is less common but can cause encephalitis, particularly in older adults. It has been identified in California.
3. Californian serogroup viruses (La Crosse, Jamestown Canyon, Snowshoe Hare): These are transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and have been known to cause encephalitis, particularly in children. They are named after California because they were first identified there.
4. Tick-borne encephalitis viruses: There are several tick-borne viruses that can cause encephalitis, including Powassan virus and deer tick virus. These have been reported in California but are rare.

It's important to note that any virus that causes an infection in the body has the potential to spread to the brain and cause encephalitis, so there are many other viruses that could potentially be associated with encephalitis in California or any other location.

Anoplura is an order of insects that are external parasites, specifically known as sucking lice. They are ectoparasites that live on the skin and hair of mammals, including humans, and feed on their blood. Anoplura species have a specialized mouthpart called a fascicle, which consists of several parts working together to pierce the host's skin and suck blood.

The most common and medically significant example of Anoplura is Pediculus humanus, which includes two subspecies: P. h. capitis (head louse) and P. h. corporis (body louse). These species are obligate parasites that can only survive on human hosts. Infestations with these lice can cause skin irritation, itching, and the transmission of diseases such as typhus and trench fever.

It is important to note that Anoplura species are not to be confused with other types of lice, such as chewing lice (Mallophaga), which primarily feed on dead skin scales and hair rather than blood.

'Aplysia' is a genus of marine mollusks belonging to the family Aplysiidae, also known as sea hares. These are large, slow-moving herbivores that inhabit temperate and tropical coastal waters worldwide. They have a unique appearance with a soft, ear-like parapodia on either side of their body and a rhinophore at the front end, which they use to detect chemical cues in their environment.

One of the reasons 'Aplysia' is well-known in the medical and scientific community is because of its use as a model organism in neuroscience research. The simple nervous system of 'Aplysia' has made it an ideal subject for studying the basic principles of learning and memory at the cellular level.

In particular, the work of Nobel laureate Eric Kandel and his colleagues on 'Aplysia' helped to establish important concepts in synaptic plasticity, a key mechanism underlying learning and memory. By investigating how sensory stimulation can modify the strength of connections between neurons in 'Aplysia', researchers have gained valuable insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie learning and memory processes in all animals, including humans.
