An inexpensive feature card retrieval system has been combined with the Systematised Nomenclature of Pathology (SNOP) to provide simple but efficient means of indexing and filing 2 in. x 2 in. transparencies within a department of pathology. Using this system 2400 transparencies and the associated index cards can be conveniently stored in one drawer of a standard filing cabinet.  (+info)

Patient information extraction in digitized radiography. (2/14)

Digital imagery is gradually replacing the traditional radiograph with the development of digital radiography and film scanner. This report presents a new method to extract the patient information number (PIN) field automatically from the film-scanned image using image analysis technique. To evaluate the PIN field extraction algorithm, 2 formats of label acquired from 2 different hospitals are tested. Given the available films with no constraints on the way the labels are written and positioned, the correct extraction rates are 73% and 84%, respectively. This extracted PIN information can link with Radiology Information System (RIS) or Hospital Information System (HIS), and the image scanned from the film then can be filed into the database automatically. The efficiency this method offers can simplify greatly the image filing process and improve the user friendliness of the overall image digitization system. Moreover, compared with the bar code reader, it solves the automatic information input problem in a very economical way. The authors believe the success of this technique will benefit the development of the PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and teleradiology.  (+info)

Computer-stored faculty publication file using the MT/ST in a medium-sized medical center library. (3/14)

The Bowman Gray School of Medicine Library has implemented a computerized faculty publication file adapted from an existing system that utilized a Magnetic Tape/Selectric Typewriter for catalog card production and computer storage. The faculty publication file has provided printouts for the school's annual report and monthly faculty bulletins. After the data for all faculty bibliographies have been stored in the file, it will be possible to retrieve complete author and departmental listings. The file will be continuously updated by adding current citations and the bibliographies of new faculty members and by deleting data when faculty members leave the staff.  (+info)

Sexual assaults in Greenland: characteristics of police reported rapes and attempted rapes. (5/14)

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to describe characteristics of reported sexual assaults against adolescents and adults in Greenland society. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of police files. METHODS: Data about victims and alleged offenders were extracted from all available police files concerning reported rapes and attempted rapes in 2002 of persons 12 years and older in all of Greenland. RESULTS: In total, 173 rapes and attempted rapes were reported to the police. Comprehensive data about 82 cases were analysed and showed that the vast majority of assaults occurred in private homes and often in the presence of other people. The offender was closely connected to the victim in 92% of the cases. Both victim and offender were severely intoxicated by alcohol in half of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of police-reported sexual assaults is high compared with the incidence in other Nordic countries and the pattern of assaults differs from that in many other countries. The studied rape cases were characterized by close relationships between victims and offenders and by both being influenced by alcohol. This is explained by the structure of Greenland society, by people living in small and closed communities and by a relatively high prevalence of binge drinking. Prevention of sexual assaults demands prevention of excessive alcohol abuse. Access to medical and psychosocial counselling and support for all victims of sexual assaults is recommended. Mediation may be considered as a judicial choice in view of the prevalence of close connections between offender and victim.  (+info)

Local image filing system in neurosurgery: validity of selective storage of radiographic images. (6/14)

In an effort to achieve efficient image management in the practice of neurosurgery, a clinical data base system was designed and developed to process, store and retrieve neuroradiologic image information on hospitalized patients with the use of a local image filing system (EFPACS-500, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd). Storage and retrieval of radiographic images were studied to quantify existing procedures and to evaluate the validity of new technology. One of our hospitals (Southern Tohoku Research Institute for Neuroscience) has annually produced approximately 100,000 sheets of film radiographs, resulting in a great deal of serious problems, particularly lack of space for storage. In addition, the overall averaged ratio of selected key films to total files of radiographs was estimated to be 16.3% for hospitalized patients during the past 5 years. It is assumed that, by means of digital storage on this selective basis, radiographic storage problems can be solved with the use of the current data base system which efficiently handles image information involving patient care. In the practical view another substantial improvement in this work is the high functionality of the system, with which radiographic images coupled with a variety of clinical data on patients can be stored in a descriptive fashion.  (+info)

Improving medical records filing in a municipal hospital in Ghana. (8/14)

BACKGROUND: Medical records are kept in the interest of both the patient and clinician. Proper filing of patient's medical records ensures easy retrieval and contributes to decreased patient waiting time at the hospital and continuity of care. This paper reports on an intervention study to address the issue of misfiling and multiple patient folders in a health facility. DESIGN: Intervention study. SETTING: Municipal Hospital, Goaso, Asunafo North District, Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana. METHODS: Methods employed for data collection were records review, direct observation and tracking of folders. Interventions instituted were staff durbars, advocacy and communication, consultations, in-service trainings, procurement and monitoring. Factors contributing to issuance of multiple folders and misfiling were determined. Proportion of multiple folders was estimated. RESULTS: Results revealed direct and indirect factors contributing to issuance of multiple patient folders and misfiling. Interventions and monitoring reduce acquisition of numerous medical folders per patient and misfiling. After the intervention, there was significant reduction in the use of multiple folders (i.e., overall 97% reduction) and a high usage of single patient medical folders (i.e., 99%). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, a defined medical records filing system with adequate training, logistics and regular monitoring and supervision minimises issuance of multiple folders and misfiling.  (+info)
