On the reliability of recent tests of the Out of Africa hypothesis for modern human origins. (25/160)

In this paper we critique two recent studies that have been claimed to disprove the Out of Africa hypothesis for modern human origins (Hawks et al., 2000; Wolpoff et al., 2001). We show that the test prediction employed by Hawks et al. (2000) and Wolpff et al. (2001) is not relevant to many versions of the Out of Africa hypothesis, and that the key specimens they used are problematic in terms of morphological representativeness. We also show that there are significant problems with the character state datasets employed in the studies. Lastly, we highlight evidence that the main method used in the studies (pairwise difference analysis) is not reliable when applied to the type of data employed by Hawks et al. (2000) and Wolpoff et al. (2001). In view of the foregoing, we contend that Hawks et al.'s (2000) and Wolpoff et al.'s (2001) claim to have disproved the Out of Africa hypothesis cannot be sustained.  (+info)

The development of conceptual framework in physiological anthropology. (26/160)

From an international viewpoint, the physiological anthropology had always developed in a mosaic-like structure until the end of the nineteen-sixties. Some of the pieces of the mosaic then started to create significant elements of the theoretical concepts of this science. Generally speaking, research in physiological anthropology consists of the process of individual biology and the process of population biology. Through using these processes, physiological anthropologists have come to realize the importance of individual thinking and the inadequacy of essentialistic concept such as the ideal man, and now infer that all populations are polytypic. Physiological anthropologists have refined the conceptual framework of their science and composed a set of keywords characterizing it. These are technological adaptability, environmental adaptability, functional potentiality, whole body coordination, and physiological polytypism. These keywords are mutually interdependent and do not form any orthogonal relations.  (+info)

A physio-anthropological approach in evaluation of human adaptability to living environment: in the case of artificial light environment. (27/160)

Attention has been focused on human adaptability to human-adopted artificially modern and comfortable environments which may not always match the adaptability by the physiological state of humans. This discrepancy was found to induce a slight tension in the human body on evaluation with a physio-anthropological approach. Although a standard methodological approach has yet to be established, the present study attempted to evaluate human adaptability to artificial light environment, based on evaluations from three major possible perspectives: a) central nervous system, b) autonomic nervous system and c) biological rhythm. In order to detect the slight tension, human volunteers were exposed to an artificial light environment, and the appropriate physiological parameters were then examined from photic signal pathways in a brain. The findings revealed that a higher color temperature of fluorescent lamps induced a slight tension, although many other factors remained to be elucidated.  (+info)

Ergonomic anthropology is a complex synthesis of studies which was formed at the borderline of anthropology, physiology and psychology. The subject of the studies is the psychosomatic status of working men interacting with techniques by means of technical tools. This status has a dual display: first, through somatometric features, known as ergonomic dimensions; second, through the subjective feelings (proprioreceptive) of a working person on the level of comfort or discomfort of the soma. The ergonomic dimensions of the body serve as a basis for calculations of the parameters of working places and reflect posture and movement activity. Three groups of methodological tasks are tested. 1. Adaptation of the anthropometric method and discovery of its specificity for ergonomics tasks. 2. Elaboration of principles and rules of applying ergonomics measurements of the body for constructing techniques. 3. The choice of objective and subjective methods of somatic comfort evaluations.  (+info)

Morphological affinities of the Sahelanthropus tchadensis (Late Miocene hominid from Chad) cranium. (29/160)

The recent reconstruction of the Sahelanthropus tchadensis cranium (TM 266-01-60-1) provides an opportunity to examine in detail differences in cranial shape between this earliest-known hominid, African apes, and other hominid taxa. Here we compare the reconstruction of TM 266-01-60-1 with crania of African apes, humans, and several Pliocene hominids. The results not only confirm that TM 266-01-60-1 is a hominid but also reveal a unique mosaic of characters. The TM 266-01-60-1 reconstruction shares many primitive features with chimpanzees but overall is most similar to Australopithecus, particularly in the basicranium. However, TM 266-01-60-1 is distinctive in having the combination of a short subnasal region associated with a vertical upper face that projects substantially in front of the neurocranium. Further research is needed to determine the evolutionary relationships between Sahelanthropus and the known Miocene and Pliocene hominids.  (+info)

Physiological anthropology design: a comparative study between Germany and Japan. (30/160)

With the recent globalization of industrial products, there is doubt as to whether the methodology of Physiological Anthropology has also been standardized. The purpose of this study is to assess signs of standardization through a comparative analysis of Physiological Anthropology design in Germany and Japan. This survey investigates its characteristics through four factors: comfort, usability, sensation and aesthetics. Both nations regard the first three indicators as important. The difference in assessment is, however, considerable. While German physiological anthropologists use subjective evaluation by means of questionnaires, somatometry and biomechanical analysis, their Japanese counterparts apply physiological measurements of the higher nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. Polymorphism and improving functional potentiality have recently gained increasing respect in Japan. Notions of aesthetics are not consciously analyzed in both countries. If the sense of beauty of product design relates to a physical and mental response, developing a systematic analysis on this factor would be a useful task for Physiological Anthropology.  (+info)

Physiological anthropology: past and future. (31/160)

Environmental studies in adaptive human biology by North American anthropologists have a history of strong investigative research. From both laboratory and field work, we have gained major insights into human response to physical and social challenges. While these results were considered by most professionals to belong within evolutionary biology, in fact the intellectual structure sprang almost entirely from physiological equilibrium models. Consequently, physiological process itself was the focus. Further, most of the physiological patterns were not linked directly to important outcomes such as work output, reproductive success or survival. About 1975, American physiological anthropologists, led by Paul Baker, turned to studies of health, change and stress response. These studies were strong, but were still neither genetic nor evolutionary in intellectual structure. Evolutionary human biology was taken over by a new body of theory now called "behavior ecology", positing that selfish genes control human behavior to promote their own reproduction. This was paralleled by strong use of evolutionary theory in some areas of molecular biology. However, although physiological anthropologists have not focused on evolution, we have been developing powerful causal models that incorporate elements of physiology, morphology, physical environment and cultural behavior. In these "proximate" biocultural models, it is of little importance whether outcomes such as work or energy management are genetically based. Our future offers two major challenges. First, we must confirm causal links between specific physiological patterns and outcomes of practical importance to individuals and societies. Second, if we are to take our place in evolutionary biology, the one overarching theory of life on earth, we must understand the heritability of physiological traits, and determine whether they play a role in survival and reproduction.  (+info)

Effects of pollution on human growth and development: an introduction. (32/160)

Pollution is a worldwide problem and its potential to influence the physiology of human populations is great. Studies of human growth and development in relation to pollution have increased in number and quality since the mid-twentieth century. Many studies have found that some pollutants have detrimental effects on human growth, particularly prenatal growth. The heavy metal, lead, is commonly found in human populations and is related to smaller size at birth and studies have reported decrements that range up to about 200 grams. Noise stress from transportation sources also is related to reduced prenatal growth with somewhat smaller decrements reported. Studies of humans exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls, one of the persistent organic pollutants, have reduced size at birth, advanced sexual maturation and altered hormone levels related to thyroid regulation. Thus different pollutants exert effects through different physiological pathways. However, some studies have not observed these effects, which indicates that the situation is complex and requires further study with better study designs. Determining the effects of pollutants on human physiology and growth is difficult as it requires fairly large numbers of subjects who are not purposely exposed but for whom exposure can be measured. These effects of pollutants and the mechanisms of effect require further study to understand and, it is hoped, to blunt or block any detrimental effects on human health and well-being.  (+info)
