Comparison of optic disc image assessment methods when examining serial photographs for glaucomatous progression. (17/1386)

AIM: To assess serial, simultaneous stereo optic disc images by four methods for glaucomatous progression. METHODS: Using varying techniques, two ophthalmologists assessed serial optic disc images of 52 eyes from 27 patients with a mean duration between images of 18 months. The neuroretinal rim width was qualitatively assessed by four assessment methods and compared with quantitative rim measurements made using PC based software. RESULTS: The highest sensitivity of 83% was achieved using computerised stereo chronoscopy. CONCLUSION: Stereo chronoscopy improved the detection of subtle optic disc changes when compared with simpler assessment techniques.  (+info)

The human visual system is optimised for processing the spatial information in natural visual images. (18/1386)

A fundamental tenet of visual science is that the detailed properties of visual systems are not capricious accidents, but are closely matched by evolution and neonatal experience to the environments and lifestyles in which those visual systems must work. This has been shown most convincingly for fish and insects. For mammalian vision, however, this tenet is based more upon theoretical arguments than upon direct observations. Here, we describe experiments that require human observers to discriminate between pictures of slightly different faces or objects. These are produced by a morphing technique that allows small, quantifiable changes to be made in the stimulus images. The independent variable is designed to give increasing deviation from natural visual scenes, and is a measure of the Fourier composition of the image (its second-order statistics). Performance in these tests was best when the pictures had natural second-order spatial statistics, and degraded when the images were made less natural. Furthermore, performance can be explained with a simple model of contrast coding, based upon the properties of simple cells in the mammalian visual cortex. The findings thus provide direct empirical support for the notion that human spatial vision is optimised to the second-order statistics of the optical environment.  (+info)

Quantitative analysis of the anatomy of the epineurium of the canine recurrent laryngeal nerve. (19/1386)

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the amount of epineurium surrounding the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) compared with a limb nerve, that to flexor hallicus longus (NFHL). Nerve samples were obtained from 10 adult dogs and studied using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy to measure the relative proportion of epineurium and the relative proportions of adipose and collagenous tissue comprising the epineurium in both nerves. Significantly greater relative epineurial cross-sectional areas and adipose content were found in the RLN than in the NFHL. Based on observations on noncranial peripheral nerves, the findings indicate that the RLN is better protected against deformational forces associated with compression than stretching forces. The RLN may not be structured well for successful reinnervation after injury. The patterns observed for adipose tissue in RLN epineurial tissue appeared unique compared with those previously reported in peripheral nerves. The primary role associated with adipose tissue is to 'package' the nerve for protection. The RLN is considered to be a vital nerve in the body, as are other cranial nerves. The large proportions of adipose tissue in the epineurium may relate to the importance of protecting this nerve from injury.  (+info)

Farmers strive to increase the yield of their fields by adding nutrients and water to the land, and using pesticides to control insects and disease. In addition to bountiful harvests, the results of their endeavors may include elevated amounts of fertilizers in surface waters and aquifers and potential risk to themselves and their neighbors from exposure to pesticides. Precision agriculture is the use of modern information technologies such as geographic information systems, the global positioning system, and remote sensing from the air to reduce the environmental effects of these chemicals while enhancing the productivity of farming. By combining crop yield maps with soil survey maps and remote sensing output, farmers can identify areas that need more or less fertilizer, water, or pesticide.  (+info)

A new digital optic disc stereo camera: intraobserver and interobserver repeatability of optic disc measurements. (21/1386)

AIMS: To investigate the intraobserver and interobserver repeatability of optic disc measurement using a new digital optic disc stereo camera. METHODS: 112 consecutive new patients presenting to a glaucoma service had dilated optic disc photography performed using a new digital stereo camera (Discam, Marcher Enterprises Ltd, Hereford). The images were analysed by two masked observers using a stereo viewer and computer simulated stereopsis. Vertical and horizontal cup:disc ratios (CDR), cup area:disc area, and cup circumference:disc circumference were computed. Intraobserver and interobserver repeatability analyses were performed. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and 95% tolerance for change (TC) were computed. RESULTS: 220 optic discs were photographed, of which 196 were suitable for analysis (10 were of poor image quality and 14 had anomalous discs). Mean age of patients was 65 years, 60 were male and 48 female. For intraobserver measurements of: horizontal CDR, ICC = 0.94, TC = 0.11 (15% of range); vertical CDR, ICC = 0.92, TC = 0.14 (16% of range); cup area:disc area, ICC = 0.95, TC = 0.10 (13% of range), and cup circumference:disc circumference, ICC = 0.95, TC = 0.09 (14% of range). For interobserver measurements of: horizontal CDR, ICC = 0.89, TC = 0.14 (19% of range); vertical CDR, ICC = 0.90, TC = 0.14 (16% of range); cup area:disc area, ICC = 0.92, TC = 0.13 (16% of range), and cup circumference:disc circumference, ICC = 0.90, TC = 0.12 (17% of range). Systematic bias between observers was within acceptable limits. CONCLUSIONS: Digital stereo disc photography and analysis provide repeatable measures of optic disc variables. The results compare favourably with ophthalmoscopic and stereophotographic methods of assessment of the optic disc.  (+info)

Lighting direction affects recognition of untextured faces in photographic positive and negative. (22/1386)

Face recognition in photographic positive and negative was examined in a same/different matching task in five lighting direction conditions using untextured 3-D laser-scanned faces. The lighting directions were +60, +30, 0, -30 and -60 degrees, where negative values represent bottom lighting and positive values represent top lighting. Recognition performance was better for faces in positive than in negative when lighting directions were at +60 degrees. In one experiment, the same effect was also found at +30 degrees. However, faces in negative were recognized better than positive when the direction was -60 degrees. There was no difference in recognition performance when the lighting direction was 0 and -30 degrees. These results confirm that the effect of lighting direction can be a determinant of the photographic negative effect. Positive faces, which normally appear to be top-lit, may be difficult to recognize in negative partly because of the accompanying change in apparent lighting direction to bottom-lit.  (+info)

A reexamination of a childhood cancer stereotype. (23/1386)

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether young adults have stereotypical beliefs toward children who have been treated for cancer. METHODS: Undergraduate participants read a vignette describing a child labeled either healthy (HL), in remission from cancer and no longer undergoing treatment (RCL), or in remission and still undergoing treatment (RCTL) and rated the child on the Ratings of the Child Questionnaire (ROCQ). Univariate and multivariate analyses of variance were conducted. RESULTS: Participants rated the HL child more positively than the RCL or RCTL child; the RCL and RCTL child ratings did not differ. Females evaluated the child more positively than did males. CONCLUSIONS: These results support previous findings of a childhood cancer stereotype. However, effect sizes were small, which may indicate a weak stereotype with these specific participants.  (+info)

Development of a new high-speed measuring system to analyze the dental cast form. (24/1386)

A new non-contact measurement system employing of a line laser and CCD camera was developed to rapidly measure maloccluded dental casts with large depth and high accuracy. In this system, the measuring interval along the line laser and the model scanning direction perpendicular to the line laser were both 0.2 mm. By averaging the raw data through repetitious input and smoothing by local filtering, the noise was effectively decreased. Sub-pixel processing, which calculates the pixel position with the largest brightness within one pixel, improved the accuracy in the measurement to 22 microns compared with 65 microns before sub-pixel processing. Dental casts with malocclusion were measured with this system. The time and the depth for the measurement were about 10 minutes and 60 mm, respectively. This was a vast improvement compared with our previous system employing a point laser. In the CG of the measured dental casts, smooth and detailed surface morphology were sufficiently reproduced, and recognition of the characteristic points in the cast could be accomplished with the accuracy of 30 microns. This measurement system will be helpful to analyze the dental cast form with malocclusion in progress.  (+info)
