*  Urolithiasis risk: a comparison between healthcare providers and the general population | BMC Health Services Research | Full...
This nationwide cohort study found, during a 5-year follow-up period, that the period prevalence for urolithiasis was 2.96 % in physicians, 2.84 % in pharmacists, 1.07 % in nurses, and 1.76 % in other healthcare providers. Physicians had a lower urolithiasis risk than the general population; however, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare providers did not. When comparing all four subgroups of healthcare providers, physicians had a lower urolithiasis risk than other healthcare providers. In the comparison physician specialties, surgeons and family medicine physicians had a lower risk for urolithiasis than other specialists. This study provided us a new insight about the risk for urolithiasis in healthcare providers. This information might help us make and promote better health policy for the general population.. The possible mechanism that physicians had a lower urolithiasis risk than general population ...

*  Tamsulosin for Urolithiasis in the Emergency Dept - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
Urolithiasis is a disease that effects 12% of the population and its incidence is growing. In the US there are over 1.1 million visits annually to Emergency Departments for renal colic. The disease is extremely painful, often requiring large amounts of narcotic analgesia, and results in lost work days. Moreover, up to 30% of patients may eventually require lithotripsy or surgical removal of the stone. Currently there are no medical interventions other than analgesia which are offered to patients.. Based on encouraging results from several small European clinical studies, the researchers hypothesize that the administration of tamsulosin to patients with symptomatic urolithiasis will enhance stone passage, and reduce both the time to recovery and the need for surgical intervention or lithotripsy. The researchers will conduct a study by identifying and recruiting patients presenting with urolithiasis in the emergency departments of four institutions.. A total ...
*  The effect of different methods of controlling urolithiasis on ovine mineral metabolism.
The widespread use of high-energy, low roughage diets among feedlot sheep has lead to the development of several production diseases (Bide et al., 1973). One of the least easily identifiable is urolithiasis, yet it is an important cause of death among feedlot sheep (Emerick, 1988). The primary causative factors of urolithiasis are an alkaline urine and a high urinary P level (Bushman et al., 1965a, 1965b, 1968). The prevention of this disease therefore involves the use of an anionic salt such as NH4Cl in the diet, to acidify the urine, or the use of a high Ca:P ratio in order to decrease urinary P levels (Bushman et al., 1965a; Robbins et al., 1965). At present NH4Cl is included in sheep rations with the express purpose of preventing urolithiasis. However, this method has a disadvantage as anionic salts have been shown to cause metabolic acidosis (Harmon & Britton, 1983) and therefore the second means of prevention, that of a high Ca:P ratio, may be the more ...

By Margaret Pearle, Stephen Nakada. Urolithiasis, or stone sickness happens in 7% of girls and 12% of fellows at some point soon, and those information are emerging. in addition, in the event you shape a stone, the chance of a recurrence is sort of 50% inside five years of preliminary analysis. for that reason, the necessity for powerful, minimally invasive possible choices for stone eradication and prevention is necessary. simply because stone illness contains a wide a part of any urologist's perform, a radical wisdom of the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of stone ailment is important so one can comprehend and enforce therapy innovations to avoid stone formation. UNLABELLED This review paper provides a summary of medical therapies available for urolithiasis. The summary includes general medical advice, prophylactic medications, dissolution therapy and medical expulsion therapy. The paper is designed to provide a management strategy for all physicians who treat urolithiasis, from general practitioners, to emergency physicians, to urologists. OBJECTIVE • To provide an up to date review of the literature in relation to the medical management of stone disease. This will encompass prophylaxis, dissolution therapy and medical expulsion therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS • First-time stone formers do not regularly have a full urine and electrolyte evaluation due to the low incidence of a reversible metabolic cause. • However, stone disease is common and over a lifetime urolithiasis can affect up to 10-15% of the population. RESULTS • Medical management of stone disease encompasses preventative measures, medical dissolution ...

Many studies compared the serum/plasma 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D₃ (1,25(OH)₂D) and 25 hydroxyvitamin D₃ (25(OH)D) between people with and without nephrolithiasis, and their results were conflicting. After systematically searching PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, CNKI, and the Wanfang Database, we conducted a meta-analysis. Thirty-two observational studies involving 23,228 participants were included. Meta-analysis of these studies showed that of stone formers (SFs), calcium SFs had significantly higher concentrations of 1,25(OH)₂D (weighted mean difference (WMD), 10.19 pg/mL; 95% confidence interval (CI), 4.31-16.07; p = 0.0007 and WMD, 11.28 pg/mL; 95% CI, 4.07-18.50; p = 0.002, respectively) than non-stone formers, while the levels of 25(OH)D (WMD, 0.88 ng/mL; 95% CI, -1.04-2.80; p = 0.37 and WMD, -0.63 ng/mL; 95% CI, -2.72-1.47; p = 0.56, respectively) are similar. Compared with controls and normocalciuria SFs, hypercalciuria SFs had increased circulating 1,25(OH)₂D (WMD, 9.41 pg

*  Clinical and pathological study of an outbreakof obstructive urolithiasis in feedlot cattle in souther Brazil
