*  "Correlations of skin fold thickness and validation of prediction equat" by Zainab Hussain, Tazeen H. Jafar et al.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and skin fold thickness (SKF) equations for estimation of body fat (BF) composition in secondary school children and validation of prediction equations by Slaughter, Goran and Dezenberg. DESIGN: Cross sectional analytical study. SETTING: Joint Commission for International Accredited (JCIA) tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan from January 2010 to May 2010. PARTICIPANTS: The study was approved by the Hospital's ethical review committee. Written and verbal consents were obtained from principals of two schools and parents of 99 children (mean age of 14±1.89 years; min-max 9-19 years; 54 men and 45 women) accrued in study. DEXA scan was acquired and SKF was measured at angle of the scapula, iliac crest and mid-arm for bicep and tricep skin folds using Holtain Callipers. Correlations were established between estimated fat mass (FM) and per cent BF (%BF) calculated by DEXA and those predicted by ...

Background: Body mass index (BMI) and triceps skinfold thickness thickness (SFT) are assessment tools for underweight, a major health problem in developing countries as well as emerging obesity and overweight. Objectives: To compare the use of BMI and SFT in determining the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity among primary school pupils in Abakaliki metropolis of Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria. Method: Eight hundred and four pupils (415 males, 389 females), aged 6-12 years, in four public and four private primary schools were selected by a multi stage random sampling. Four hundred and twenty-six (53.0%) subjects were in public schools while 378 (47%) were in private schools. Standard methods were used to determine the weight, height and triceps SFT of the participants. BMI values were calculated for each participant and compared with BMI for age and sex from World Health Organisation (WHO 2007) reference standard and SFT values compared with ...

PBFSlaughter was highly correlated (r ~ 0.85) with PBFDXA. However, among children with a relatively low skinfold thicknesses sum (triceps + subscapular), PBFSlaughter underestimated PBFDXA by 8 to 9 percentage points. In contrast, PBFSlaughter overestimated PBFDXA by 10 points among boys with a skinfold thickness sum ≥ 50 mm. After adjustment for sex and age, lipid levels were related similarly to the body mass index, PBFDXA and PBFSlaughter. There were, however, small differences in associations with blood pressure levels: systolic blood pressure was more strongly associated with body mass index, but diastolic blood pressure was more strongly associated with percent body fat ...

*  Differences in the U.S. Trends in the Prevalence of Obesity Based on Body Mass Index and Skinfold Thickness
Downloadable! There are several ways to measure fatness and obesity, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The primary measure for tracking the prevalence of obesity has historically been body mass index (BMI). This paper compares long-run trends in the prevalence of obesity when obesity is defined using skinfold thickness instead of body mass index (BMI), using data from the full series of U.S. National Health Examination Surveys. The results indicate that when one uses skinfold thicknesses rather than BMI to define obesity, the rise in the prevalence of obesity is detectable ten to twenty years earlier. This underscores the importance of examining multiple measures of fatness when monitoring or otherwise studying obesity.

Evidence increasingly suggests that South Asians have a characteristic phenotype of proportionately greater adiposity, increased insulin resistance and an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease compared with white Europeans.9 ,25 Using data from the BiB cohort (as used here), we have previously shown that similar ethnic differences appear to be present at birth.12 Specifically, we showed that, despite being born smaller and lighter, for a given birth weight Pakistani infants had similar triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness measurements to white British infants suggesting greater relative fatness; they also had higher cord leptin levels even without taking birth weight into account.12 ,14 In light of this, and in the knowledge that this greater fatness may underlie the increased risk of type 2 diabetes among South Asian populations,26 our aim was to develop a programme of growth monitoring to compliment routine height and weight assessments, that would be feasible to ...

Assessing body fat can be done using the following methodologies: Hydrostatic weighing, skinfold assessment and bio-electrical impedance. Of these methods, one that is both accurate and practical is skinfold measurement. The measurements are taken with calipers, which gauge the skinfold thickness in millimeters of areas where fat typically accumulates (i.e., abdomen, hip, arm, back, and thigh). Once the measurements are recorded, the numbers are inserted into an equation that calculates a body fat percentage and alternatively body lean mass. When measurements are performed with good technique, the skinfold test can accurately predict body fat with a + 3% margin of error. Skinfold is a preferred method of body fat measurement for non-clinical settings because it is easy to administer with proven accuracy and is not obtrusive with regards to the patient. It also provides much more data than just the final ...

It is sometimes asserted that body fatness is the true outcome of interest in obesity research and that BMI is an inaccurate surrogate. Although BMI is an inaccurate index of body fatness among normal-weight children [3], the results of several studies indicate that BMI is, in general, as strongly associated with adverse levels of various CVD risk factors as are more accurate assessments of body fatness [13-18]. In the current, cross-sectional study of 8- to 19-year-olds in the U.S., PBFSlaughter estimates of body fatness were biased. PBFSlaughter underestimated DXA-calculated percent body fat among relatively thin children, but the extent of underestimation decreased at higher levels of body fatness. Among the heaviest boys, PBFSlaughter overestimated PBFDXA by about 10 percentage points. Despite being less strongly associated with PBFDXA than was PBFSlaughter, we found that adjusted levels of BMI were, in general, as strongly associated with levels of lipids and lipoproteins as was either ...

Mistake 2 - Trying to build muscle without first losing body fat. Generally, the leaner you are the more sensitive to nutrients your body is. Especially if you have a good amount of muscle mass. When you have excess fat on your body, it's doing everything it can to store it and hold on to it. Generally, your insulin sensitivity is lower, your body deals with carbohydrates like you're pre-diabetic in some instances (I.e., not very well!), and the size and number of fat cells you have make it much easier for your body to store even more fat. If you first make sure you're at a good level of leanness (less than 10% for guys, measured using the skinfold calliper technique - other methods may vary); you will be much more likely to have a successful lean mass building phase, as you're encouraging important nutrients to be put towards building muscle on a lean person, rather than storing fat on someone with a few more spare tyres to lose. First get lean, and then build muscle.. Mistake 3 - Doing ...

I feel this time of year after the Christmas binge is a good time to address the critical issue which is weight loss. From my personal experience I'm noticing a growing trend in what we call in the fitness industry "skinny-fat". Your first question would be how can someone be both fat and skinny? Well it's quite simple it involves under eating along with poor nutritional quality from the food you do eat and a lack of exercise. The low calories and poor quality along with the lack of any strenuous exercise will ensure you're not hugely overweight if at all but you have a serious lack of muscle tone and there for a high body-fat percentage.. BMI is the government way of tracking obesity (Body Mass Index) its a simple calculation based on your height and weight it takes nothing else into account, this can be misleading for many people. Both BMI and Weight encourage people to lose weight and the majority of people will cut calories in order to that. With a growing trend in anorexia do we really want ...

The levels of glucose, free fatty acids (FFA), glycerol, 3-hydroxybutyrate (3-HB), cyclic AMP, and Cpeptide immunoreactivity (CPR) were determined in venous plasma samples taken every half hour during an 8-h period under standardized conditions in 10 insulin-dependent pregnant women. The metabolic profiles were determined in each trimester of pregnancy. The women were divided into two groups, one with (group I: 3B, 1C, and ID according to White's classification) and one without (group II: IB, 3C, and ID) measurable plasma CPR levels. Plasma glucose values were significantly higher (P , 0.01) with greater variability in group II than in group I in the first and second trimesters, while no such difference was found in the third trimester of pregnancy. FFA, glycerol, 3-HB, and cyclic AMP levels were not different between the groups in any trimester of pregnancy. Amniotic fluid CPR was higher and skinfold thickness of the newborn greater in group II than in group I. Neonatal ...
