OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and skin fold thickness (SKF) equations for estimation of body fat (BF) composition in secondary school children and validation of prediction equations by Slaughter, Goran and Dezenberg. DESIGN: Cross sectional analytical study. SETTING: Joint Commission for International Accredited (JCIA) tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan from January 2010 to May 2010. PARTICIPANTS: The study was approved by the Hospital's ethical review committee. Written and verbal consents were obtained from principals of two schools and parents of 99 children (mean age of 14±1.89 years; min-max 9-19 years; 54 men and 45 women) accrued in study. The primary measure for tracking the prevalence of obesity has historically been body mass index (BMI). This paper compares long-run trends in the prevalence of obesity when obesity is defined using skinfold thickness instead of body mass index (BMI), using data from the full series of U.S. National Health Examination Surveys. The results indicate that when one uses skinfold thicknesses rather than BMI to define obesity, the rise in the prevalence of obesity is detectable ten to twenty years earlier. Assessing body fat can be done using the following methodologies: Hydrostatic weighing, skinfold assessment and bio-electrical impedance. Of these methods, one that is both accurate and practical is skinfold measurement. The measurements are taken with calipers, which gauge the skinfold thickness in millimeters of areas where fat typically accumulates (i.e., abdomen, hip, arm, back, and thigh). Once the measurements are recorded, the numbers are inserted into an equation that calculates a body fat percentage and alternatively body lean mass. When measurements are performed with good technique, the skinfold test can accurately predict body fat with a + 3% margin of error. Skinfold is a preferred method of body fat measurement for non-clinical settings because it is easy to administer with proven accuracy and is not obtrusive with regards to the patient.
