*  UK's largest primary healthcare centre to open next year | Nursing in Practice
The largest primary healthcare centre in Britain - and probably Europe - took another step towards completion when it was topped out with a final trowel-full of concrete by Professor Jonathan Montgomery, chair of Hampshire Primary Care Trust.. When it opens next year, the £30m Aldershot Centre for Health will provide primary healthcare for a local population of 45,000, as well as specialist services to 250,000 people in the wider area. Uniquely, the facilities will be shared by the 5,000-strong Army garrison. At 138,500 sq ft/12,866 m², the building is many times bigger than a conventional health centre. It will have more than 750 rooms for 47 separate user groups. The concept is to provide economies of scale and meets objectives set out in the NHS Plan of 2000.. The developers for the Centre created a special funding package for Hampshire ...

*  Choosing Wisely and Prevention Through Primary Care | Resources | Resources | The College of Family Physicians Canada
This abbreviated 3-minute version of the Dr Mike Evans video focuses on a number of common screening tests that are overused or inappropriately used and therefore considered low-value care for much of the population. Watch this video to learn more. This initiative is a positive step for the CFPC to nationally coordinate communication tools that family physicians and patients can access directly at the point of care. High quality materials delivered in innovative ways such as this are important in helping empower patients to proactively prepare for dialogues with their health care providers.. *  Is the quality of primary healthcare services influenced by the healthcare centre's type of ownership?-An observational study...
This study shows varying differences between the groups of privately and publicly owned PCCs in patient perceived quality, antibiotic use, the use of benzodiazepine derivatives and the rates of follow-ups carried out for patients with chronic diseases. However the findings of this study cannot unambiguously answer the question of whether or not the quality of primary healthcare services is influenced by the healthcare centre's type of ownership: while the group of privately owned PCCs rate higher in patient perceived quality and have a lower use of benzodiazepine derivatives, the group of publicly owned PCCs show a lower use of antibiotics and have higher rates of follow-ups carried out for patients with chronic diseases. At the same time this study revealed the existing structural differences between these two groups of primary care providers: Privately owned PCCs were on average smaller, ...

*  MPHC - Mallow Primary Healthcare Centre
MPHC is Ireland's first and largest primary health care centre with both GPs and HSE community services working out of the same location. Placed as it is in Mallow at the crossroads of Munster, the MPHC is ideally located to serve over 120,000 people between the GP practices, HSE services and the enhanced medical services on offer at the 4th Practice. MPHC is working with tomorrow's medical professionals, with final year students and GP registrars taking their first practical steps into the profession here. MPHC also works closely with the pharmaceutical industry on research projects and some of the initiatives developed and trialled at MPHC have been rolled out nationally. We are ...

*  Choices for Change: The Path for Restructuring Primary Healthcare Services in Canada
This policy synthesis identifies four major models for organizing primary healthcare that are relevant to the Canadian context. Two models fall into what can be broadly called a communityoriented approach, while the other two fall into what can be called a professional approach. The vision of community primary healthcare is to improve the health of specific geographically defined populations and to contribute to community development by providing a set of required medical, health, social, and community services. Within this vision, there are two types of models: the integrated community model and the nonintegrated community model. These models differ by their degree of integration into other parts of the healthcare system. Several characteristics of their resources, organizational structure, and practices reflect their varying degree of ...

*  CSIRO PUBLISHING | Journal of Primary Health Care
The eleven articles in this inaugural special issue of the Journal of Primary Health Care all focus on balancing the tensions between operating a sustainable business and providing health care, known as hybridisation tension. Hybridisation tensions arise when a primary care practice is exposed to the demands of antagonistic goals-namely providing patient centred high quality care that meets the needs of the population it serves, and maintaining a business that is at least sustainable and meets the expectations of funders and business owners. These tensions have been present in the sector going back to the inception of general practice services as we know them in New Zealand in 1938.1,2. This special issue considers various effects of hybridisation tensions on primary health care; are they increasing, what are appropriate ...

*  Primary Care-Based Interventions to Reduce Alcohol Use Among HIV Patients - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
This application responds to RFA-AA12-009, Interventions to Improve HIV/AIDS and Alcohol-Related Outcomes (U01). The proposed study takes place in a HIV primary care clinic and uses the health plan's electronic medical record (EMR) for screening; it has the potential to provide a significant benefit to HIV-infected individuals by reducing hazardous drinking and the associated complications. Prior studies have identified high rates of co-occurrence of HIV and hazardous drinking (defined as drinking over threshold limits, i.e., 5+ daily or 14+ weekly drinks for men and 4+ daily or 7+ weekly drinks for women). Drinking at these levels can compromise antiretroviral (ART) treatment, and increase rates of depression, unsafe sex, and mortality. The proposed randomized trial examines the comparative effectiveness of two highly implementable behavioral interventions for reducing hazardous drinking, each with an adaptive, stepped-care component: 1) ...
