*  Brian Johnson, MD - Just What Lies Beyond the Pleasure Principle? | Atlanta Psychoanalysis
In this talk, Dr. Johnson will discuss the biological basis of cathexis, emotional investment in others. Cathexis involves hormonal systems interacting with SEEKING, especially endogenous opioids and oxytocin. Neurotic conflict is described as a result of conflicting neural systems/goals. This 21st century neurobiological framework may be used to evaluate Freud's concepts of the repetition compulsion and the death instinct. We find that by 1920 Freud had already answered his question of 'What lies beyond the pleasure principle?' The repetition compulsion and the death instinct were adventitious.. Dr. Brian Johnson has been the Director of Addiction Psychiatry and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, New York, since 2008. He taught courses about addiction at Harvard Medical School for 30 years before moving to Upstate. Dr. Johnson received his medical degree in 1976 from the New York Medical College, Valhalla, ...

*  Botulism Fears Bring Herring Recall | Food Safety News
Brooklyn's NY Fish Inc. Monday recalled its NY Fish Brand (cold) Smoked Herring for being un-eviscerated prior to processing.. The recall came after a routine inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors. No illnesses have been associated with the recall. NY Fish Inc. last year recalled both smoked salmon and salted herring products for possible Listeria contamination, and a March 10, 2010 warning letter was sent to the company by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about conditions inside the seafood processing facility.. The latest recalled herring may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause Botulism, a serious and potentially fatal foodborne illness. Symptoms of botulism include blurred vision, general weakness and poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing, and respiratory paralysis. The sale of un-eviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium ...

*  Connecticut Quaternary Geology Long Island Submerged Marine Deltaic Deposits
... identifies early postglacial, marine deltaic deposits submerged in Long Island Sound. This information appears on Sheet 1 of the The Quaternary Geologic Map of Connecticut and Long Island Sound Basin (Stone and others, 2005). The Connecticut Quaternary Geology digital spatial data combines the information portrayed on the on-land portion of the Quaternary Geologic Map of Connecticut and Long Island Sound Basin (Stone and others 2005) with the information portrayed on its sister map, the Surficial Materials Map of Connecticut (Stone and others, 1992). When used together, these maps provide a three dimensional context for understanding and predicting the internal composition, resource potential and hydrologic character of Connecticut's glacial and postglacial deposits. Both were compiled at 1:24,000 scale, and published at 1:125,000 scale. The Quaternary Geologic Map of Connecticut and Long Island Sound Basin (Stone and ...

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of one of the great voice scientists, Janina Casper, PhD. Many of us cut our teeth, so to speak, in the area of voice when we first cracked open the Colton and Casper voice textbook in graduate school. I had the privilege to share dinner with her following her receipt of the Frank R. Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award at ASHA 2006. It is no surprise that she encouraged all of her dinner companions that evening to continue in the pursuit of new knowledge for voice care: She was always the consummate clinician and mentor. She will be missed. Any affiliates interested in contributing to the The Janina K. BUFFALO, N.Y. - Clinical studies conducted at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences have completed the clinical development of the first immunologic test for diagnosing chronic rhinosinusitis.. The new test, which is being launched this month nationwide by Immco Diagnostics of Amherst, N.Y., makes it possible, for the first time, to definitively diagnose the condition. Immco Diagnostics licensed the test from the Mayo Clinic, where the researchers, who later joined UB, first developed and patented it.. "This is a game-changer," says Jens U. Ponikau, MD, clinical assistant professor of otolaryngology at UB, who led the university's clinical trials on the new test with David A. Sherris, MD, professor and chair of the UB Department of Otolaryngology, and Kishore Malyavantham, PhD, of Immco. "It provides physicians with a way to precisely identify what kind of inflammation is present in the nose and can help guide their treatment approach.". Chronic rhinosinusitis is ...

Sports Drinks vs. Your Teeth. Sports drinks and energy drinks might seem like healthy alternatives to soda, but they are not healthier for your teeth. In our office we often see damage to the teeth and smile due to sports drinks. A new study from New York University College of Dentistry shows that sports drinks contain high levels of acids that may be linked to a condition called erosive tooth wear. In just 90 minutes of exposure to sports drinks over the course of a day the enamel coating on the teeth can be damaged and the teeth weakened. This can lead to tooth decay or erosion and the need for restoration.. ...

*  "Cleft palate, Retrognathia and Congenital Heart Disease in Velo-Cardio" by Marcia A. Friedman, Nathanial Miletta et al.
Objective: Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is caused by a microdeletion of approximately 40 genes from one copy of chromosome 22. Expression of the syndrome is a variable combination of over 190 phenotypic characteristics. As of yet, little is known about how these phenotypes correlate with one another or whether there are predictable patterns of expression. Two of the most common phenotypic categories, congenital heart disease and cleft palate, have been proposed to have a common genetic relationship to the deleted T-box 1 gene (TBX1). The purpose of this study is to determine if congenital heart disease and cleft palate are correlated in a large cohort of human subjects with VCFS. Methods: This study is a retrospective chart review including 316 Caucasian non-Hispanic subjects with FISH or CGH microarray confirmed chromosome 22q11.2 deletions. All subjects were evaluated by the interdisciplinary team at the Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome International Center at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY
