This course serves as an introduction to the structure and function of the nervous system. Emphasis is placed on the cellular properties of neurons and other excitable cells. Topics covered include the structure and biophysical properties of excitable cells, synaptic transmission, neurochemistry, neurodevelopment, and the integration of information in simple systems and the visual system.

Dr. Yang is interested in the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying development of the vertebrate eye. Her research efforts are directed toward understanding how the eye primordium (the beginnings of vision cells) is specified and how retinal progenitor (precursor) cells make cell fate choices during formation of the retina. To achieve these goals her laboratory uses a variety of molecular and biochemical approaches that include cloning genes involved in eye development, characterizing gene expression patterns, culturing retinal cells and analyzing protein activation during cell-to-cell communication. In addition, Dr. Yang utilizes retroviral vectors (special laboratory-based viruses) to introduce wild-type and mutant genes into the developing retina and brain in order to assess the functions of these genes. Her current studies will contribute to our knowledge of human eye and retina development and provide a biological basis for therapeutic usage of protein growth factors ...
Cognitive neuroscience, where psychology meets biology, has enabled us to clarify some of the biological bases for substance use and other addictive disorders. This workshop will examine connections between the brain changes and psychological/emotional/behavioral components of addictive disorders. The progression of these disorders will be discussed along with their increasing resistance to change and the implications for treatment.. ...

Advancing Equity and Inclusion at the NAPE Center The NAPE Center Leadership strongly re-affirms our Diversity and Inclusion policy as posted on our professionalism policy page. We strive to create and sustain a research and training environment in which all of our members can thrive. The recent news reports focus our attention on the horrifying examples of racism, and these disturbing images remind us of the constant challenges our Black colleagues experience. We are a diverse group of researchers, students, and fellows, and we stand by our principles of inclusivity and equity. We condemn the violence, systemic racism, and covert oppression experienced by too many of our friends and colleagues. We stand with our community leaders who are using their platforms to foster open dialogues, create community, and bring compassion and kindness to others. We stand in remembrance of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, David McAtee, Ahmaud Arbery, Manuel Ellis and the numerous other victims of ...

Recent neuroscience and behavioral evidence reveal how the reading system successfully adapts when phonological codes are relatively coarse grained due to reduced or distorted auditory input. This research focuses on deaf adults who have achieved reading success and who use sign language in their everyday lives. The evidence suggests that the optimal end-state for the reading system may differ for deaf versus hearing adults and indicates that certain neural patterns that are maladaptive for hearing readers may be beneficial for deaf readers.. ...
