Viruses assigned to different species within the genus Sigmavirus have one or both of the following characteristics: A) minimum amino acid sequence divergence of 20% in L; and B) occupy different ecological niches as evidenced by differences in hosts.. As sigmaviruses are transmitted only verthttps://talk.ictvonline.org/ictv-reports/ictv_online_report/negative-sense-rna-viruses/w/rhabdoviridae/799/genus-sigmavirus/edit#ically, resulting in extreme host fidelity over ecological time scales, viruses found within different host species are likely to represent different virus species. Although host-switching does occur over evolutionary time scales, it is possible that highly related viruses could be found in hosts of different species but host-switching events are likely to be rare. Species demarcation based upon the host species should be supported by phylogenetic analysis based upon L gene sequences to indicate that the proposed virus species represents a distinct lineage and, if possible, ...https://talk.ictvonline.org/ictv-reports/ictv_online_report/negative-sense-rna-viruses/mononegavirales/w/rhabdoviridae/799/genus-sigmavirus

Phocine morbillivirus - Wikipedia
Phocine morbillivirus, formerly Phocine distemper virus (PDV), is a paramyxovirus of the genus Morbillivirus that is pathogenic for pinniped species, particularly seals. Clinical signs include laboured breathing, fever and nervous symptoms. PDV was first identified in 1988 as the cause of death of 18,000 harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and 300 grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) along the northern European coast. In 2002, an epidemic of PDV along the North Sea coast resulted in the deaths of 21,700 seals, estimated to be 51% of the population. Antibodies to PDV have been found in a number of carnivorous mammal species in the Western North Atlantic, including polar bears, and the Atlantic walrus. The suddenness of the emergence of PDV and related viruses in aquatic mammals has implicated environmental changes as the cause. Pollutants have been posited as contributors by interfering with the ability of animals to mount a defense against infection. Alternatively, climate change and overfishing ...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phocine_distemper_virus
