*  Reproductive history and risk of small bowel cancer by histologic type : a population-based study
The male predominance of the two main histologic malignancies of the small bowel cancer may reflect a role of sex hormones which will be examined in this study. This was a nationwide population-based nested case-control study, based on a cohort of subjects born between 1932 and 2008, as identified in the Swedish Multi-Generation Register. For each case of small bowel cancer, 10 age- and sex-matched controls were randomly selected. Number of children and age at having the first child were analyzed in relation to the risk of small bowel cancer using conditional logistic regression, providing odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 632 female cases and 894 male cases of small bowel cancer were included. No overall increased risk of small bowel cancer was found in parous compared to non-parous women (OR = 1.02, 95 % CI 0.67-1.54). There was no association between age at first birth and small bowel cancer (, 30 years of age vs , 20 years; OR = 1.04, 95 % CI 0.72-1.50). No ...

In oncology, small intestine cancer, also small bowel cancer and cancer of the small bowel, is a cancer of the small intestine. It is relatively rare compared to other gastrointestinal malignancies such as gastric cancer (stomach cancer) and colorectal cancer.[citation needed] Small intestine cancer can be subdivided into duodenal cancer (the first part of the small intestine) and cancer of the jejunum and ileum (the later two parts of the small intestine). Duodenal cancer has more in common with stomach cancer, while cancer of the jejunum and ileum have more in common with colorectal cancer. Five year survival rates are 65%. Several different subtypes of small intestine cancer exist. These include: adenocarcinoma gastrointestinal stromal tumor lymphoma ileal carcinoid tumor Risk factors for small intestine cancer include: Crohn's disease Celiac disease Radiation exposure Hereditary gastrointestinal cancer syndromes: familial adenomatous polyposis, hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, ...

One of the more interesting aspects of small bowel adenocarcinoma is its rarity in comparison to large intestine adenocarcinoma. Even though the small intestine represents approximately 70% to 80% of the length and over 90% of the surface area of the alimentary tract, the incidence of small bowel adenocarcinoma is 30-fold less than the incidence of colon adenocarcinoma. Numerous theories have been proposed to explain the small intestine's relative protection from the development of carcinoma. Proposed protective factors have centered on two concepts. First, the rapid turnover time of small intestinal cells results in epithelial cell shedding prior to the necessary acquisition of multiple genetic defects. Second, the small bowel's exposure to the carcinogenic components of our diet are limited due to rapid small bowel transit time, the lack of bacterial degradation activity that occurs in the small bowel, and the relatively dilute, alkaline environment of the small bowel ...

*  Comparison of abdominal adiposity and overall obesity in relation to risk of small intestinal cancer in a European Prospective...
BACKGROUND: The etiology of small intestinal cancer (SIC) is largely unknown, and there are very few epidemiological studies published to date. No studies have investigated abdominal adiposity in relation to SIC.. METHODS: We investigated overall obesity and abdominal adiposity in relation to SIC in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), a large prospective cohort of approximately half a million men and women from ten European countries. Overall obesity and abdominal obesity were assessed by body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression modeling was performed to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Stratified analyses were conducted by sex, BMI, and smoking status.. RESULTS: During an average of 13.9 years of follow-up, 131 incident cases of SIC (including 41 adenocarcinomas, 44 malignant carcinoid ...

Meckel's Diverticulum What is Meckel's diverticulum? Meckel's diverticulum is a small pouch in the wall of the intestine, near the junction of the small and large intestines. The pouch is a remnant of tissue from the prenatal development of the digestive system. It is not made of the same type of tissue as the small intestine, but, instead, is made of the type of tissue found in the stomach or the pancreas. The tissue in Meckel's diverticulum produces acid, just as the tissue of the stomach does. The in...

Meckel's diverticulum is a small pouch in the wall of the intestine, near the junction of the small and large intestines. The pouch is a remnant of tissue from the prenatal development of the digestive system. It is not made of the same type of tissue as the small intestine, but instead, is made of the type of tissue found in the stomach or the pancreas.. The tissue in Meckel's diverticulum can produce acid, just as the tissue of the stomach does. The intestinal lining is sensitive to being in contact with acid, and eventually an ulcer can form. The ulcer can perforate (rupture), causing waste products from the intestine to leak into the abdomen. A serious abdominal infection called peritonitis can result. The intestine can also become obstructed (blocked) by Meckel's diverticulum.. ...

*  10 Symptoms of Carcinoid Tumor - Facty Health
Around 10% of the people affected by carcinoid tumor will develop carcinoid syndrome. Carcinoid syndrome occurs when the carcinoid tumor produces different types of hormones. Flushing is one of the symptoms of carcinoid syndrome. About 75% of carcinoid tumor patients will experience flushing after doing exercise, being stressed, drinking alcohol and eating certain food as spices and chocolate. However, flushing will gradually start to appear on its own without precipitating factors. The release of histamine may explain the flushing in the carcinoid tumor of the stomach. Histamine is a chemical that causes the blood vessels to become wider, leading more blood to flow to that area. As a consequence, this area will appear red ...

*  The use of capsule endoscopy for the diagnosis of small bowel tumours: the first single centre UK experience | Gut
Results 24 patients were found to have a small bowel tumour on CE. This represented 1.5% of all patients that underwent CE over seven years. The indications included iron deficiency anaemia (n=9), overt bleeding (n=11) and investigation of complications of coeliac disease (n=4). Patients had a mean number of 4.7 tests prior to CE which included gastroscopy, colonoscopy, small bowel radiology, computed tomographic scanning, mesenteric angiograms and red cell labelled scans. The mean age in the group was 55 years (range 34-83 years). The endoscopic appearances on CE included a mass or ulcerated mass lesion (n=20) or isolated ulceration of mucosa with fresh bleeding (n=3) and multiple ulcers with abnormal underlying mucosa (n=1).. The tumours were located in the jejunum in ten patients, in the ileum in 13 patients and in the fourth part of the duodenum in one patient. The lesions were single in 96% of cases and multiple in 4% (n=1). Capsule retention occurred in four patients (16.6%). 19 patients ...

Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes called colon or rectal cancer.. Cancer can sometimes start in the small bowel (small intestine), but small bowel cancer is much rarer than large bowel cancer.. Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the UK, with around 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year.. About one in every 20 people in the UK will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime.. Signs and symptoms. The three main symptoms of bowel cancer are blood in the stools (faeces), changes in bowel habit (such as to more frequent, looser stools) and abdominal (tummy) pain. However, these symptoms are very common and most people with them do not have bowel cancer.. For example, blood in the stools is more often caused by haemorrhoids (piles), and a change in bowel habit or abdominal pain is usually due to something you have eaten.. As almost nine out of 10 people with bowel ...

Carcinoid tumors are rare, slow-growing cancers that usually start in the lining of the digestive tract or in the lungs. Because they grow slowly and are asymptomatic in the early stages, the average age of people diagnosed with digestive or lung carcinoids is about 60. In later stages the tumors sometimes produce hormones that can cause carcinoid syndrome. The syndrome causes flushing of the face and upper chest, diarrhea, and trouble breathing.[Citation Needed] Surgery is the main treatment for carcinoid tumors. If they haven't spread to other parts of the body, surgery can cure the cancer.[1] ...
*  Endoscopic Detection of Dysplasia in Crohn 's Disease Patient - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
Patients with Crohn's disease (CD) have an increased risk of small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA). Long duration of CD is the main risk factor. SB dysplasia has been associated with SBA in 20% of cases, always described in diseased sites. The progression to neoplasia and natural history remains unknown but progression of inflammation to dysplasia and then to adenocarcinoma is suspected.. As for surveillance recommendations for colorectal carcinoma in long standing inflammatory colonic disease, endoscopic screening of SB could be proposed in CD patients with risk factors of SBA. No study can be found in literature.. The investigators propose a multicenter exploratory open study on prospective cohort of CD patients with high risk of dysplasia or cancer. The goal is evaluate the rate of dysplasia and adenocarcinoma detected by enteroscopy with biopsies in a high risk CD population ...

*  Intriguing viral link to intestinal cancer in mice | EurekAlert! Science News
More than 50 percent of adults in the United States test positive for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. For most people, infection produces no symptoms and results in the virus persisting in the body for a long time. New research in mice now suggests that it is possible that HCMV infection could help promote intestinal cancer in humans, although more human studies are needed if such an association is to be confirmed.
