There are actually several different ways of defining "as close as possible". One measure that turns out to be convenient is the "sum of squared errors" (SSE; the word "residual" is sometimes used instead of "error"). The approach is the following: for each x,y point in the data set, the difference between the observed y and the y-value predicted by the model is computed. This difference (the "error" or "residual") is then squared, and the sum of all the squared error terms is then taken to be an indication of how well the model fits the data. The best fitting model thus has the smallest possible SSE, and this approach is therefore referred to as "least squares model fitting".
