*  Non-linear causality between the stock and real estate markets of Western European countries: Evidence from rank tests
Downloadable (with restrictions)! Using the non-parametric rank tests proposed by Breitung (2001), we set out in this study to determine whether any non-linear long-run equilibrium relationship exists between the stock and real estate markets of Western European countries. We go on to adopt the threshold error-correction model (TECM) to determine whether a similar relationship is discernible possibly non-linear functions of the log-price of these two markets. The findings clearly point to the existence of long-run unidirectional and bidirectional causality between the real estate market and the stock market in regions both above and below the threshold level. Finally, we find the existence of both wealth and credit price effects in the real estate markets and stock markets of Western European countries, which thereby offer financial institutions and individual investors in their construction of long-term investment portfolios within these two asset markets.

*  The normalization of AIDS in Western European countries
The occurrence of AIDS led in every Western European country to exceptional innovations in prevention, patient care, health policy and questions of civil rights. This exception can be explained above all by the fact that not only was a health catastrophe feared but also civilizational harm in the field of civil rights. Despite national differences, this brought about similar exceptionalist alliances consisting of health professionals, social movements and those affected. With the failure of a catastrophe to arise, signs of fatigue in the exceptionalist alliance and increasing possibilities of medical treatment, exceptionalism in Europe is drawing to a close. Four phases are distinguished between in this process, given nationally different patterns of development: Approx. 1981-1985: emergence of exceptionalism. The reasons underlying exceptionalism are investigated. Approx. 1986-1991. consolidation and performance of exceptionalism. The investigation centers on the ...

*  CDKN2BAS is associated with periodontitis in different European populations and is activated by bacterial infection. | IKMB
Epidemiological studies have indicated a relationship between coronary heart disease (CHD) and periodontitis. Recently, CDKN2BAS was reported as a shared genetic risk factor of CHD and aggressive periodontitis (AgP), but the causative variant has remained unknown. To identify and validate risk variants in different European populations, we first explored 150 kb of the genetic region of CDKN2BAS including the adjacent genes CDKN2A and CDKN2B, covering 51 tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (tagSNPs) in AgP and chronic periodontitis (CP) in individuals of Dutch origin (n=313). In a second step, we tested the significant SNP associations in an independent AgP and CP population of German origin (n=1264). For the tagSNPs rs1360590, rs3217992, and rs518394, we could validate the associations with AgP before and after adjustment for the covariates smoking, gender and diabetes, with SNP rs3217992 being the most significant (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.85; p=0.0004). We further showed in vivo gene ...

*  WHO Issues Warning Over European Measles Outbreaks - Redorbit
More than 26,000 cases of measles and 115 outbreaks of the disease have been reported across 36 different European countries in 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Friday.. Furthermore, France had the largest number of reported measles cases with more than 14,000, according to statistics published in the December 2 edition of the Weekly Epidemiological Record (WER). BBC News also noted that 83% of all cases were in Western European countries, with slightly less than 1,000 confirmed measles cases in England and Wales combined.. "These occurred predominantly among older children and young adults who had not been vaccinated or whose vaccination history was unknown," the WHO report said. "The primary reason for the increased transmission and outbreaks of measles in the region is failure to vaccinate.". The British news organization also notes that measles outbreaks have resulted in nine European deaths so far this year, as well as nearly 7,300 ...

*  Deadly E. coli Bacteria Continues to Run Rampant Throughout Europe | DrSamGirgis.com
There have been 18 confirmed deaths and over 1,500 individuals infected with a rare strain of Escherichia coli bacteria in 10 different European countries. Austria, Denmark, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K. have reported cases of the infection. The outbreak does not seem to be slowing and is causing great concern among health officials in Europe and the United States, who have stated that it is the worst in recorded history. The bacteria responsible for the deadly outbreak has been identified as a strain of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) designated O104:H4. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the strain has been "seen in humans before but never in an EHEC outbreak". This bacterium is particularly virulent and can cause hemorrhagic colitis with bloody diarrhea, which can ultimately develop into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS is characterized by hemolysis of blood cells resulting in anemia and ...

*  1997: Rural areas - Completed projects - Our work - Alzheimer Europe - Alzheimer Europe
People who suffer from Alzheimer's disease (or another form of dementia) and who live in rural areas may encounter problems in obtaining a diagnosis, receiving adequate and appropriate care, and benefiting from services and facilities that are available in other areas. The problems encountered and the reasons behind these problems differ from one area to another, but may, for example, be linked to the physical features of the geographical area, political decisions affecting the distribution of funds or services and attitudes resulting from living in a close knit or isolated community.. There are rural areas in many countries. Some share certain characteristics such as being cut off for weeks or months per year, having difficulties with transport and having to deal with a lack of facilities. We were therefore interested in sharing the experience and knowledge of people with dementia, carers, service providers and Alzheimer associations from rural areas in different European countries.. ...

In Belgium, since 1969, sport is a competence under the control of public authorities defined according to the linguistic regime. As in most Western European countries, sport has been compartmentalised by giving rise to three main types of practice: 'professional', 'traditional' and 'alternative' sports (Diegel, 1995). Clubs linked to sports federations constitute the local setting up of the sports organization, which is largely a majority (Zintz, 2014). Other operators from the public domain and the private sphere coexist (Cloes, 2012). In the school environment, sport can be found in three contexts: within the compulsory curriculum (physical education), integrated to extracurricular activities (activities organized during recess ...

*  Nutriad Mycotoxin Survey Spain | The Fish Site
Hot and dry weather conditions are associated with increased aflatoxin and fumonisin production by the fungi from Aspergillus and Fusarium species. Weather is therefore the most important factor in determining whether aflatoxin and fumonisin contamination will be a problem or not.". Uncertain mycotoxin situation in 2015 led Nutriad to conduct several mycotoxin surveys in different European countries (UK and Ireland, Poland, Spain). Each survey was conducted on 60-70 samples of wheat or maize.. The Spanish Nutriad Mycotoxin Survey, executed in Q4 2015, covers 60 locally produced maize samples from across Spain. More than 400 analyses were conducted to test for the occurrence of the seven mycotoxins most frequently found in agricultural commodities that are intended for animal feed production.. The survey provided an insight into the incidences of aflatoxin B1 (AfB1), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 toxin, fumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2) and ochratoxin A (OTA) across all ...

*  Treatment of ulcerous stomach bacteria linked to obesity
The review - which gathered data from 50 studies from ten different European countries, Japan, the US and Australia published between 1990 and 2012 - looked at the impact of treatment of the stomach bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which can cause stomach ulcers. It suggested a correlation between prevalence rates of H. pylori and and weight gain in developed countries.. Professor Gerald Holtmann from the department of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Australia, who led the review, said: "The rate of obesity and overweight were inversely and significantly correlated with the prevalence of H. pylori infection.". "The gradual decrease of the H. pylori colonisation observed in recent decades could be causally related to the obesity endemic observed in the Western world," he said.. However the researchers said that other factors linked to H. pylori aside from infection could also explain this association with obesity. "Thus the role that ...

In the present work, the prognostic value of the genotype in localized GIST, along with the already known prognostic factors for DFS, was investigated in a large prospective series of patients with GIST, diagnosed in four different European countries with the longest follow-up time published to date. On multivariate analysis, relapse was predicted by MI ,10 mitoses/50 HPF, tumor size ,10 cm, primary nongastric tumor location, and independently by a specific tumor genotype. In particular, the effect of tumor size (HR, 6.75) and mitotic count (HR, 5.7) was remarkable, and also evident for tumor location (HR 1.64). Surprisingly, tumor rupture has not been shown to be an independent predictor of outcome on multivariate analysis. The reasons for the latter remain speculative, but the completeness of reporting of tumor rupture might have had a role, because this parameter was frequently not reported in the older cases and was lacking in nearly 20% of patients. In addition, the intrinsic ...
