Erratic Rocks & Cream City Bricks: Building Milwaukee From the Ground Down - UWM Science Bag
The geological history of a city, starting at the surface with modern buildings constructed from local materials and going down six football field lengths to bedrock, and back six hundred million years in time, comes alive in this illustrated video. Geologist Norman Lasca also demonstrates the tools and methods by which a geologist gathers data and identifies the layers of deposits in an area, and how this information is used to produce 2- and 3-dimensional models of the geological make-up of the area.. ...

Biologist Julie Oliver explains the inner workings of our heart and circulatory system in "Matters of the Heart: Cell and Cardiovascular Disease." With audience participation, Oliver will unravel how blood cells called platelets function at the site of an injury to form a plug. Theres good and bad news about our bodys ability to stop bleeding. While this rapid response is critical to wound healing, its regulation can be disrupted, causing a cascade of events that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. As she leads a tour into our veins, discover the whats inside that activates the platelets - and what inhibits them. She also investigates how drugs like aspirin inhibit platelets clotting function. A demonstration reveals why platelets in mammals (thats us!) respond particularly well to a daily, low-dose aspirin treatment for cardiovascular disease.. ...

Sonia Bardy - Biological Sciences
There are currently two major research projects in our lab. The first focuses on spatial organization of proteins within a bacterial cell. We focus our studies on the chemotaxis systems within Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and seek to elucidate how protein localization is correlated to function. In this project, we are investigating the connection between polar localization and function of the Chp chemosensory system. In addition, we are also investigating the mechanism of partitioning chemotaxis proteins that regulate flagellar based motility.. The second project focuses on the role of pyomelanin in Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence. Pyomelanin is an extracellular pigment produced by some clinical isolates. Pyomelanin protects P. aeruginosa from the immune response, by providing protection from oxidative stress. Inhibition of pyomelanin production results in increased sensitivity to oxidative stress, and results in increased bacterial death. We hope to develop an anti‑virulence agent that can be ...
John Berges and Former Students Featured in UWM Report - Biological Sciences
John Berges, professor of biological sciences and freshwater sciences, recently published a paper that included many past undergraduate researchers as co-authors. Co-author contributions began all the way back in 2005.. The UWM Report featured Berges and his former students to highlight how undergraduate research began many science related careers for the alum. Many of the past researchers credit their undergraduate experience for preparing them for professional careers within science. Read the article here..
