Kelp forests extend throughout most of the nearshore waters of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Hugging the coastline, they extend from just beyond the breaking waves to depths of ,30 meters. Although kelp forests are a familiar and iconic habitat within the sanctuary, kelp canopy cover typically encompasses about 25 square miles, or less than 0.5% of the total surface area within the sanctuary. Although MBNMS encompasses 6,094 square miles of ocean, only 8% is within recreational diving depths (,130 feet).. Two species account for the bulk of physical structure and kelp biomass: the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, and the bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana. Although it is difficult to distinguish the two species using remotely sensed data (e.g., aerial photographs or hyperspectral images), long-term patterns of kelp canopy cover are persistent throughout the sanctuary.. Bull kelp, which tolerates high wave action, is typical along exposed rocky shores, whereas giant kelp is abundant ...

Dear visitor,. Welcome to the webpage rootecology.de. I am a botanist studying plant ecophysiology: water and nutrient uptake under salinity and drought, plasticity of architecture, morphology and physiology under competition and stress, and plant and ecosystem carbon fluxes (with an emphasis on root systems and specialized root segments w/o mycorrhiza and disturbance effects). I work in both agricultural and forest production systems. I develop and advertise advanced approaches and methodologies which could enhance knowledge of the hidden half. ...

The Northern Great Plains fire effects monitoring program was established in 1996 to document baseline vegetation information, to detect trends in vegetation populations, to ensure that resource management objectives are met, and to aid in refining parks fire management programs. Since 1996, over 150 monitoring plots have been established in forest stands, shrublands, and grasslands of 10 National Park units of the NGP. The majority of our monitoring protocols follow those described in the NPS Fire Monitoring Handbook, although we have used alternative protocols to answer some park-specific questions.. In addition to monitoring vegetation, the monitoring crew collects fuel moisture data throughout the summer season as well as assists with prescribed and wildland fires.. ...

Favorable environmental conditions such as mild winters and summer rainfall may cause dramatic increases in rodent populations. More rodents become infected under crowded conditions. Deer mice may enter human structures in rural areas. Humans may become infected when they inhale airborne virus or come into direct contact with infected rodents or their urine, feces, or nests. Other mammal species (cats, dogs, coyotes) may be infected through contact with rodent hosts, but they are not known to transmit the virus.. ...
Reservoir and Reservoir Distributions: United States. All hantaviruses known to cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) are carried by New World rats and mice of the family Muridae, subfamily Sigmodontinae. The subfamily Sigmodontinae contains at least 430 species, which are widespread in North and South America. The rodent hosts of HPS are generally not associated with urban environments, although some species, including the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), will enter human habitation in rural and suburban areas.. Several hantaviruses that are pathogenic for humans have been identified in the United States. In general, each virus has a single primary rodent host. Other small mammals can be infected as well but are much less likely to transmit the virus to other animals or humans. The deer mouse is the host for Sin Nombre virus (SNV), the primary causative agent of HPS in the United States. The deer mouse is common and widespread in rural areas ...
