*  Building a Secure, Prosperous Future in Central America | whitehouse.gov
Last week, I had the opportunity to join our global partners from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador at the Northern Triangle Conference on Prosperity and Security in Central America in Miami, Florida.. These nations have courageously pursued the fight against corruption, crime, and drug trafficking. They've undertaken structural reforms to establish a stronger foundation for economic growth; and they are working in close cooperation with regional partners, business communities, and multinational institutions to implement long-term solutions to the problems facing Central America.. But despite these efforts, Central America continues to be plagued by gangs and vast criminal organizations that drive illegal immigration and illegal drugs. And the consequences of this rampant crime are not restricted to the Northern Triangle. The American people are reminded of the terrible cost of drug ...

*  Central America - Wikitravel
Central America is the thin section of land that links the North American continent with the South American continent. Geographically part of North America, it is made up of seven small, mostly tropical countries that have much more in common with South America and Mexico than the more affluent north. Mexico is occasionally considered part of Central America due to the language and cultural heritage it shares with several of the countries in the region.

*  Expenditure Issues and Governance in Central America : Expenditure Issues and Governance in Central America
This paper analyzes Central America's track record on inequality, poverty, and quality of fiscal adjustment in relation to economic growth; health and education outcomes; adequacy of social safety nets; and governance. It then assesses the degree to which the track record can be traced to reforms in public expenditure and governance. Despite the considerable heterogeneity among the countries in the region, there are some policies that all countries need to pursue. Sustained growth and a better quality of fiscal adjustment are needed, as well as policies aimed at increasing individuals' productivity and improving governance.

*  The Determinants of Banks' Liquidity Buffers in Central America
Downloadable! Banks' liquidity holdings are comfortably above legal or prudential requirements in most Central American countries. While good for financial stability, high systemic liquidity may nonetheless hinder monetary policy transmission and financial markets development. Using a panel of about 100 commercial banks from the region, we find that the demand for precautionary liquidity buffers is associated with measures of bank size, profitability, capitalization, and financial development. Deposit dollarization is also associated with higher liquidity, reinforcing the monetary policy and market development challenges in highly dollarized economies. Improvements in supervision and measures to promote dedollarization, including developing local currency capital markets, would help enhance financial systems' efficiency and promote intermediation in the region.

*  Study links sugarcane fieldwork with kidney disease epidemic in Central America - The Tico Times | Costa Rica News | Travel |...
Scientists are now a little closer to uncovering the cause of a chronic kidney disease (CKD) epidemic that has killed more than 20,000 people in Central America in the last two decades. For years, the cause of the disease - which primarily afflicts young male agricultural workers - has stumped doctors. But a new study from the Boston University School of Public Health found that sugarcane fieldwork could play a role.. "Our results provide evidence that one or more factors for this CKD epidemic are occupational," said Rebecca Laws, a doctoral student at Boston University and one of the study's authors. "We found that sugarcane workers saw a decline in kidney function during the harvest season and that it varied by job category.". Laws and her team studied 248 sugarcane workers in western Nicaragua, the epidemic's hot spot, during the sugarcane-harvesting season. They measured the workers' kidney functions before and after the harvest season and compared results from workers ...

*  Death rate, crude (per 1,000 people) - Central America & the Caribbean
More maps: Africa , Asia , Central America & the Caribbean , Europe , Middle East , North America , Oceania , South America , World , Development Relevance: The crude mortality rate is a good indicator of the general health status of a geographic area or population. The crude death rate is not appropriate for comparison of different populations or areas with large differences in age-distributions. Higher crude death rates can be found in some developed countries, despite high life expectancy, because typically these countries have a much higher proportion of older people, due to lower recent birth rates and lower age-specific mortality rates.. Limitations and Exceptions: Annual data series from United Nations Population Division's World Population Prospects are interpolated data from 5-year period data. Therefore they may not reflect real events as much as observed data.. Statistical Concept and Methodology: The crude death rate is ...

*  Association of Communitarian Health Services (ASECSA) and the Role of Religion and Health in Central America - Oxford Research...
The Association of Communitarian Health Services (ASECSA) is a transnational, religiously influenced health program in Central America created during the Cold War. ASECSA was founded in 1978 by a small group of international health professionals with ties to programs started by Catholic and Protestant clergy and laity in Guatemala's western highlands in the 1960s. It introduced a model of healthcare in which Maya health promoters and midwives became partners in healing rather than objects to be cured. Support for the health programs and ASECSA came from secular and religious international agencies, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), German Misereor, Catholic Relief Services, and the World Council of Churches. ASECSA was founded to disseminate knowledge of popular health education strategies used by health promoters and midwives to provide preventive and curative medical services to their communities. The education methods grew from ...

I've not been on the MOA forums much, but I've been on ADVrider.com a lot. I wrote this back in 2006 when I got back from riding to the Darien Gap in Panama, but I think it is still appropriate for today. In spite of the news, I don't think Mexico or Central America is any more dangerous now than it was then, which is really not that bad. Don't let the media scare you away. Plan ahead, use common sense, be courteous, and go see these fantastic countries. If you don't want to go solo, go
