*  Structural Life Science and Advanced Core Technologies for Innovative Life Science Research | CREST
The policies and basic focus for the 2014 research proposal submissions are similar to those in previous years, but as this year is the final year for research proposal submissions in this field, we particularly welcome proposals in fields where few selections have been made to date. For example, we welcome proposals on food additives and how they relate to food safety; research that may lead to the development of new testing, preventive, or treatment methods for bacteria/viruses that case food poisoning; or research that may result in the cultivation of plants relevant to environment issues. As before, we expect structural research to include programs to contribute to the further development of life science research, including more advanced research methods (e.g., for crystal structure analysis, solution scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron microscopy, single-molecule observations, molecular imaging, single-particle analysis of protein composites, mass spectrometry, ...

*  S3QL: A distributed domain specific language for controlled semantic integration of life sciences data | BMC Bioinformatics |...
In order to address the information management needs of Life Scientists, the practice of Linked Data standards must be coupled with the implementation of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs), a view also espoused by the W3C, where the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) has been recently proposed as a standard [38, 39]. In previous work we proposed the design principles of a KOS, the Simple Sloppy Semantic Database (S3DB) [15, 16, 40]. The S3DB core model is, much like SKOS, task-independent and light-weight. Implementation of the S3DB Core Model and operators resulted in a prototype that has been validated and tested by Life Scientists to address pressing data management needs or, in particular, as a controlled Read-Write Linked Data system [31, 41-43]. S3DB was shown to include the minimum set of features required to support the management of experimental and analytic results by Life Sciences experts while making use of Linked Data best practices such as HTTP URI, ...

Biological Sciences. The Eberly family's philanthropy has supported Carnegie Mellon and other colleges and universities through scholarships, professorships and other educational initiatives. Established in 1993, the Eberly Family Career Development Professorship in Biological Sciences was divided into two chairs in 1997. These professorships help to recruit, retain and recognize exceptional biological sciences faculty in the Mellon College of Science. 'Russell and Nathan are creative, highly productive scientists who use ingenious computational and mathematical tools to solve interesting problems at disciplinary interfaces,' said Elizabeth Jones, the Dr. Frederick A. Schwertz Distinguished Professor of Life Sciences and head of the Department of Biological Sciences. 'The Eberly Professorships will allow these scientists to conduct high-risk ...

*  Growing Number of Life Scientists Will Need HPC This Year - Advanced Clustering Technologies
Life science researchers who previously were able to manage their compute-intensive work with traditional workstations and simple clusters are finding that they will need more powerful HPC systems in 2015.. According to a new report from HPCWire.com, Ari Berman, GM of Government Services, the BioTeam consulting firm, said: "Roughly 25 percent of life scientists, and this includes bench-level scientists, will require HPC capabilities in 2015, few of whom have ever used a command line.". This emerging need for HPC in life sciences research is being driven largely by complex DNA sequence data but also by proteomic data, protein structure data, cell and organelle imaging data and pathway modeling data.To manage all of these complex data-driven projects, life scientists are looking for such popular features as resource mapping, map GPU to CPU, core-based scheduling, rich resource management, memory, accelerators and application-aware scheduling.. Advanced Clustering offers a way ...

*  Dual Use Research of Concern
... (DURC), under the United States Government Policy, is life sciences research that, based on current understanding, can be reasonably anticipated to provide knowledge, information, products, or technologies that could be directly misapplied to pose a significant threat, with broad potential consequences, to public health and safety, agricultural crops and other plants, animals, the environment, materiel, or national security.. Dual Use Research vs Dual Use Research of Concern. Research yielding new technologies or information with the potential for both benevolent and malevolent applications is referred to as "dual use research." Some degree of dual use potential may be inherent in a significant portion of life sciences research. However, the small subset of life sciences research with the highest potential for yielding knowledge, products, or technology that could be misapplied to threaten public health or national security is referred to as "dual use ...

*  Wikimedia Blog » Blog Archive » Establishing Wikidata as the central hub for linked open life science data
We are excited to announce that the first step on this path has been completed!. Milestone 1 complete: Wikidata entities for all human genes. We have just finished adding entities for all (~40,000) human gene entries that contain a label in the Entrez Gene database [3]. We consider this a first step in making Wikidata a central repository for biological identifiers and their mappings to related resources. Each gene now has a stable identifier (e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18039760) from Wikidata that links to other key identifier systems such as Entrez Gene. These are the first seeds of the garden of knowledge that we hope to sow.. We added Entrez Gene to Wikidata in two development sprints (see here and here). The final bot was split into two subtasks. The first being a stub creator, where for each Entrez Gene entry, a stub was created. This stub consisted of the title of the gene, its aliases, its Entrez Gene identifier (P351) it being a subclass of a gene (P279) and that it was ...

*  The Wonderful World of Wikis for Life Scientists | San Diego Biotechnology Network
You may know that the San Diego Biotechnology Network, and its partner company, Comprendia, are dedicated to improving communication between life scientists and the companies that serve them. As part of this objective, we like to pass on resources for both groups to help, check out our video resources for life science and the list of life science companies using social media. Life scientists can use the wiki list below as a reference and to learn and contribute, and companies should realize the potential that resources such as these present for helping their customers put the complex science behind their products in context.. What is a wiki? Many use the term loosely these days, to refer to any web resource. To us, a wiki is a community-driven, content rich website in which many of the pages are interconnected. There are many free software programs to generate wikis, and even a resource which lists wikis and helps you choose which one will best meet your ...
