Zirconium is primarily used in nuclear reactors due to its resistance to corrosion and low neutron cross-section. Occurrence. Zirconium is never found in nature as a free metal. The principal economic source of zirconium is the zirconium silicate mineral, zircon (ZrSiO4), which is found in deposits located in Australia, Brazil, India, Russia, and the United States. (It is extracted as a dark sooty powder, or as a gray metallic crystalline substance). Zirconium and hafnium are contained in zircon at a ratio of about 50 to 1 and are difficult to separate. Zircon is a coproduct or byproduct of the mining and processing of heavy-mineral sands for the titanium minerals, ilmenite and rutile, or tin minerals. Zirconium is also in 30 other recognized mineral species including baddeleyite. This metal is commercially produced by reduction of the Zirconium (IV) chloride with magnesium in the Kroll process, and through other methods. Commercial-quality zirconium still has a content of 1 to 3% ...

Abstract: The geometric structures and stabilities of small ZrmOn (1≤m≤5, 1≤n≤2m) clusters were studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the Perdew-Wang exchange correlation functional and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The lowest energy structures of all these clusters were obtained by the sequential oxidation of the small core zirconium clusters. In general, the O atoms prefer the bridge sites along the Zrm skeleton. The ground-state structures of the (ZrO2)3 and (ZrO2)5 clusters are consistent with coordination number rules and bonding regularity. The fragmentation channels and fragmentation energies of the small zirconium oxide clusters were discussed. We found that the ZrmO2m-1 clusters (not including Zr4O7) had the largest fragmentation energy among the clusters with the same number of zirconium atoms.. Key words: Density functional theory, Zirconium oxide cluster, Fragmentation channel, Bonding regularity ...
2,370 °C. The trend is for higher symmetry at higher temperatures, as is usually the case. A small percentage of the oxides of calcium or yttrium stabilize in the cubic phase. The very rare mineral tazheranite (Zr,Ti,Ca)O2 is cubic. Unlike TiO2, which features six-coordinate Ti in all phases, monoclinic zirconia consists of seven-coordinate zirconium centres. This difference is attributed to the larger size of Zr atom relative to the Ti atom. Zirconia is chemically unreactive. It is slowly attacked by concentrated hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid. When heated with carbon, it converts to zirconium carbide. When heated with carbon in the presence of chlorine, it converts to zirconium tetrachloride. This conversion is the basis for the purification of zirconium metal and is analogous to the Kroll process. Zirconium dioxide is one of the most studied ceramic materials. ZrO2 adopts a monoclinic crystal structure at room temperature and transitions to tetragonal and cubic at higher temperatures. ...

Although zirconium has no known biological role, the human body contains, on average, 250 milligrams of zirconium, and daily intake is approximately 4.15 milligrams (3.5 milligrams from food and 0.65 milligrams from water), depending on dietary habits.[49] Zirconium is widely distributed in nature and is found in all biological systems, for example: 2.86 μg/g in whole wheat, 3.09 μg/g in brown rice, 0.55 μg/g in spinach, 1.23 μg/g in eggs, and 0.86 μg/g in ground beef.[49] Further, zirconium is commonly used in commercial products (e.g. deodorant sticks, aerosol antiperspirants) and also in water purification (e.g. control of phosphorus pollution, bacteria- and pyrogen-contaminated water).[46]. Short-term exposure to zirconium powder can cause irritation, but only contact with the eyes requires medical attention.[50] Persistent exposure to zirconium tetrachloride results in increased mortality in rats and guinea pigs and a decrease of blood hemoglobin and red blood cells in dogs. However, ...
Three studies were included to cover this endpoint. The most recent study was performed with zirconium sulfate in rainbow trout (Harris, 2014a). A stirring experiment performed to obtain a 100% v/v saturated solution indicated that no dissolved zirconium concentrations above the LOQ of 20 µg Zr/L could be detected. In addition, in a 100% v/v saturated solution, no mortality of fish was observed after 96 h (range finder). Since a measurable amount of zirconium could not be obtained in solution, it was decided at the request of the sponsor not to conduct a final toxicity test for zirconium sulfate. Based on the results of the range finding study, the 96-h LC50 was concluded to be , 100% v/v saturated solution. In the second study of Tarzwell and Henderson (1960) fathead minnow was tested in soft and hard water using zirconium sulfate tetrahydrate. A 96-h LC50 of 14 mg Zr/L in soft and 145 mg Zr/L in hard water was obtained. The results were not considered reliable because they were reported in a ...

In this work we investigated the possibilities to reduce the porosity of thin protective zirconium oxide films deposited with the sol-gel technique at low temperatures. Electrochemical investigations showed that the concentration of the stabilizing agent acetylacetone is a crucial parameter for the protection performance of the zirconium oxide films and that it is possible to run the deposition process at much lower temperatures with the optimum stabilizer concentration. This allows the application of the process to sensitive substrates that cannot be treated at high temperatures and reduces energy costs as well. Characterization of the film structure with secondary ion mass spectrometry revealed that the stabilizing agent is responsible for the formation of a mixed oxide layer at the interface of substrate and coating. The thickness of this layer can be tuned with the concentration of the stabilizing agent.. ...

The tribological properties of α-zirconium phosphate particles as an additive in anhydrous calcium grease were studied by using an Optimol SRV-V oscillating reciprocating tester and a four-ball tester. Fortunately, α-Zr(HPO4)·H2O (α-ZrP) grease exhibits excellent properties in anti-friction and wear-resistant, load-carrying capacity, and extreme pressure properties. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and 3D analysis show that α-ZrP particles appear to form a protective film allowing increased load capacity and operating frequency of the rubbed pairs. Meanwhile, α-ZrP particles can provide low friction coefficient and wear loss during a long-term test.
A novel method for the preparation of α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoparticles as an eco-friendly and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst was studied. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as the organic matrix which produced a better dispersion of ZrP nanoparticles. The catalyst was characterized by several physico-chemical techniques such as ICP-OES, XRD, TPD-NH3, pyridine-FTIR, BET, FTIR, TGA, SEM and TEM. The acidic property of ZrP was studied in the protection of aldehydes with acetic anhydride (AA) in the at room temperature. The deprotection of 1,1-diacetates has also been achieved using this catalyst in water. The procedure is operationally simple, environmentally benign and only a stoichiometric amount of AA is used. The catalyst was recovered easily from the reaction mixture, regenerated, and reused at least eight times without significant loss in catalytic activity.
Even though a graphene-oxide (GO) dispersion is attractive for electro-optical switching devices because of its high Kerr coefficient, it has several limitations such as chemical instability and optical loss due to absorption at visible wavelengths. Here we introduce the use of tetrabutylammonium-tethered α-zirconium phosphate (TBA-ZrP) colloid in various solvents for electro-optical switching devices; the TBA-ZrP colloid is chemically stable and optically transparent. We find that the electrical switching behavior of TBA-ZrP is sensitively dependent on the type of solvent. The TBA-ZrP colloid in acetone exhibits the highest effective Kerr coefficient and the fastest switching time, which is related to the unusual behavior of the viscosity of the TBA-ZrP colloid in acetone. Its viscosity is relatively low and less sensitive to concentration compared to ZrP in other solvents. This indicates that the motion of individual nanoparticles is relatively less restricted in acetone. These findings may ...
This metallurgical study of Zr-barrier fuel cladding evaluates the importance of three salient attributes: (1) metallurgical bond between the zirconium liner and the Zircaloy substrate, (2) liner thickness (roughly 10% of the total cladding wall), and (3) softness (purity). The effect that each of these attributes has on the pellet-cladding interaction (PCI) resistance of the Zr-barrier fuel was studied by a combination of analytical model calculations and laboratory experiments using an expanding mandrel technique. Each of the attributes is shown to contribute to PCI resistance.. The effect of the zirconium liner on fuel behavior during off-normal events in which steam comes in contact with the zirconium surface was studied experimentally. Simulations of loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) showed that the behavior of Zr-barrier cladding is virtually indistinguishable from that of conventional Zircaloy cladding. If steam contacts the zirconium liner surface through a cladding perforation and the ...

No toxicokinetic data (human or animal studies) are available on zirconium sulfate (a water-soluble zirconium compound). Therefore, a qualitative toxicokinetic assessment has been performed based on the physicochemical characteristics of the substance and on the available reliable toxicological data presented in this dossier. Data from other zirconium compounds are described to support this assessment. It is generally assumed that for metals and metal compounds, the metal ion (regardless of the counterparts of the metal in the respective metal compounds), is responsible for the observed systemic toxicity. Information on other zirconium compounds can thus be used as long as their inherent properties are taken into account. In addition, as indicated in ECHAs guidance on QSAR and grouping of chemicals (ECHA Chapter R.6, 2008), comparison of the water solubility can be used as a surrogate to assess the bioavailability of metals, metal compounds and other inorganic compounds. This simplistic ...

The current phosphate-based pretreatment process used for U.S. Department of Defense weapons systems and platforms to prevent corrosion poses multiple health, safety, and compliance hazards. It utilizes zinc phosphate, which raises environmental concerns with hazardous air pollutants ( HAP) and heavy metals such as Cr VI or Ni. In addition, this particular pretreatment does not provide adequate corrosion protection due to the porous nature of the coating. Although the surface morphology allows for better absorption of lubricants, it also increases the attack of corrosives to base metal substrates. ESTCP project WP-201318, led by Fred Lafferman of U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is demonstrating an innovative and cost-effective replacement technology utilizing zirconium oxide as a pretreatment.. Zirconium-based metal pretreatment technology is a better alternative to multiple conventional technologies such as zinc phosphate, chromate-containing etch primers, and chromate conversion coatings. ...

Deuterium NMR study of the dynamics of self-assembled hexadecanoate monolayers on Zirconium oxide. Photoreactivity in self-assembled monolayers formed from asymmetric disulfides having para-substituted azobenzenes
Temperature accelerated dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the strain effects on oxygen interstitial and vacancy migration in tetragonal zirconium dioxide. At zero external strain, the anisotropic migration mechanisms of oxygen defects are characterized. At non-zero strains, both the crystal structure and defect migration barriers are modified by strain. Under compressive strains, the defect migration barrier increases with the increasing strain for both interstitials and vacancies. The crystal structure transforms from a tetragonal to a nearly cubic fluorite structure. Accordingly, the defect migration becomes nearly isotropic. Under dilative strains, the migration barrier first decreases then increases with increasing strain for both types of defects. The tetragonal phase transforms to a lower symmetry structure that is close to the orthorhombic phase. In turn, the defect migration becomes highly anisotropic. Under both compressive and dilative strains, ...
In this study, water stable zirconium metal-organic framework (UiO-66) has been synthesized and for the first time applied as an adsorbent to remove aquatic arsenic contamination. The as-synthesized UiO-66 adsorbent functions excellently across a broad pH range of 1 to 10, and achieves a remarkable arsenate uptake capacity of 303 mg/g at the optimal pH, i.e., pH = 2. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest arsenate As(V) adsorption capacity ever reported, much higher than that of currently available adsorbents (5-280 mg/g, generally less than 100 mg/g). The superior arsenic uptake performance of UiO-66 adsorbent could be attributed to the highly porous crystalline structure containing zirconium oxide clusters, which provides a large contact area and plenty of active sites in unit space. Two binding sites within the adsorbent framework are proposed for arsenic species, i.e., hydroxyl group and benzenedicarboxylate ligand. At equilibrium, seven equivalent arsenic species can be captured by
The ferroelastic phase transition and shape memory effect in La-modified lead zirconate titanate ferroelectric ceramics are demonstrated directly through the temperature-dependent macroscopic recoverable strain measured in a three-point bending configuration. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that non- 180° domain switching occurs in the mechanically poled sample in two different ways at the bottom and top of the sample which have been under tensile and compressive stresses, respectively. The calculated fraction of non- 180° switched domains in the poled sample increases nonlinearly with the applied force and shows a saturation trend, which is consistent with the nonlinear behavior of the remnant strain. This study confirms that the mechanical stress applied upon cooling ferroelectric ceramics from the paraelectric to the ferroelectric phase can easily activate ferroelastic domain switching and give rise to preferred domain orientation and consequent macroscopic remnant strain which ...
Testing of large prototype lead zirconate titanate (PZT) stacks presents substantial technical challenges to electronic testing systems, so an alternative approach that uses subunits extracted from prototypes has been pursued. Extracted 10-layer and 20-layer plate specimens were subjected to an electric cycle test under an electric field of 3.0/0.0 kV/mm, 100 Hz to 10{sup 8} cycles. The effects of measurement field level and stack size (number of PZT layers) on the fatigue responses of piezoelectric and dielectric coefficients were observed. On-line monitoring permitted examination of the fatigue response of the PZT stacks. The fatigue rate (based on on-line monitoring) and the fatigue index (based on the conductance spectrum from impedance measurement or small signal measurement) were developed to quantify the fatigue status of the PZT stacks. The controlling fatigue mechanism was analyzed against the fatigue observations. The data presented can serve as input to design optimization of PZT ...

Some perks of titanium dental implants include:. Zirconium:. If your body is allergic to titanium, zirconium will be the alternate dental implant material for you. Zirconium is made from ceramic and is free from metals, which is why it acts as a better alternative for those people allergic to titanium. The study presents an ammonia microsensor integrated with a readout circuit on-a-chip fabricated using the commercial 0.18 μm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. The integrated sensor chip consists of a heater, an ammonia sensor and a readout circuit. The ammonia sensor is constructed by a sensitive film and the interdigitated electrodes. The sensitive film is zirconium dioxide that is coated on the interdigitated electrodes. The heater is used to provide a working temperature to the sensitive film. A post-process is employed to remove the sacrificial layer and to coat zirconium dioxide on the sensor. When the sensitive film adsorbs or desorbs ammonia gas, the sensor produces a change in resistance. The readout circuit converts the resistance variation of the sensor into the output voltage. The experiments show that the integrated ammonia sensor has a sensitivity of 4.1 mV/ppm.

The production methods for dental ceramics have improved greatly over the years . Increased proportion of crystalline particles has led to higher resistance to functional loads, but also changed the optical properties of the material . An yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) popularly called zirconia has been the most common dental high-strength ceramic for some years. Y-TZP contains only polycrystalline particles in a metastable tetragonal crystal structure, and is the dental ceramic material with the highest fracture strength available today . Dental zirconias are mainly used for crowns, fixed dental prostheses and implant components. The strength of zirconia depends on the density of the polycrystalline particles and quality of the product . The manufacturing process among the zirconia restorations differs with regard to material composition, processing and machining process of the milling blanks . The machining process can be hard-machining or soft-machining. The ...

To improve the wear and corrosion resistance of AZ91D magnesium alloy, Zr-based coating made of Zr powder was fabricated on AZ91D magnesium alloy by laser cladding. The microstructure of the coating was characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. The wear resistance of the coating was evaluated under dry sliding wear test condition at room temperature. The corrosion resistance of the coating was tested in simulated body fluid. The results show that the coating mainly consists of Zr, zirconium oxides and Zr aluminides. The coating exhibits excellent wear resistance due to the high microhardness of the coating. The main wear mechanism of the coating and the AZ91D sample are different, the former is abrasive wear and the latter is adhesive wear. The coating compared to AZ91D magnesium alloy exhibits good corrosion resistance because of the good corrosion resistance of Zr, zirconium oxides and Zr aluminides in the coating.. ...

The use of atomic layer deposition (ALD) to form a nanolaminate dielectric of zirconium oxide (ZrO2), hafnium oxide (HfO2) and tin oxide (SnO2) acting as a single dielectric layer with a formula of ZrXHfYSn1-X-YO2, and a method of fabricating such a dielectric layer is described that produces a reliable structure with a high dielectric constant (high k). The dielectric structure is formed by depositing zirconium oxide by atomic layer deposition onto a substrate surface using precursor chemicals, followed by depositing hafnium oxide onto the substrate using precursor chemicals, followed by depositing tin oxide onto the substrate using precursor chemicals, and repeating to form the thin laminate structure. Such a dielectric may be used as a gate insulator, a capacitor dielectric, or as a tunnel insulator in non-volatile memories, because the high dielectric constant (high k) provides the functionality of a much thinner silicon dioxide film.
Millions of people across the Indian subcontinent are at risk of chronic exposure to arsenic and fluoride in aquifers with excess TDS (|500 mg/L). Hybrid anion exchange resins with nanoparticles of zirconium oxide (HAIX-NanoZr) were created for effective fluoride removal; zirconium oxide selectively bound fluoride, silica, and phosphate. The zeta potential of HAIX-NanoZr was directly correlated to the fluoride removal capacity. Thus, to increase fluoride capacity and achieve partial desalination concurrently, a weak acid cation (WAC) exchange pretreatment was used to lower alkalinity, hardness, pH, and TDS. Consistent partial desalination (~50%) occurred in proportion to influent alkalinity and hardness. With regular acid conditioning of WAC, the fluoride capacity of HAIX-NanoZr increased 10x, 300 bed volumes (BVs) to 3500 BVs. Upon regeneration with 2% NaOH, |95% of capacity was restored; fluoride treatment was identical over three consecutive cycles with water from a fluoride-contaminated well (Nakuru
Inkjet printing of ceramic components and gold conductive tracks was carried out in this study. A commercial inkjet printer, designed for printing one layer of 2D images on paper, was modified to give adequate resolution, to reverse the substrate for overprinting many layers and to accommodate the increase in thickness of 3D components during printing. Ceramic inks were prepared by wet ball milling and printed to form 3D structures. The powders used were alumina, zirconia, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and barium titanate. The substrate used for printing the ceramic parts was an overhead transparency. Methods to stop or reduce ink flow were devised and used during printing of the ceramic parts. The alumina and zirconia powders were used for the fabrication of multi-layered laminates. The lead zirconate titanate was used to fabricate components with pillars, walls, vertical channels and x-y-z channel network. During printing of the x-y-z channel network, carbon was used as a support structure and ...

Hyperkalemia, a disorder where serum potassium ions (K+) exceed 5. Data from both Stage 3 research of ZS-9 in sufferers with hyperkalemia (with and without CKD) verified the dosage dependent rapid starting point of actions and, needlessly Bardoxolone methyl to say predicated on the setting of action, the best reductions in serum K+ had been observed in sufferers with the best baseline serum K+ beliefs [24], [26]. Furthermore, in every clinical research, ZS-9 normalization of serum K+ amounts was rapidly attained (median of 2.2 hours) and preserved. ZS-9 exhibited a standard protection profile, including GI tolerability, just like placebo in every three research [24]C[26], corroborating the historically low occurrence of adverse occasions by using zirconium in scientific settings. Zirconium continues Bardoxolone methyl to be used thoroughly Bardoxolone methyl in both oral and medical applications due to its high biocompatibility and incredibly low toxicity. Zirconium is certainly trusted in oral ...
A series of early transition metal complexes stabilized by aminopyridinato ligands have been synthesized. Many of these complexes have been studied in terms of their structure and have been evaluated in terms of applications in catalysis. The overall evaluation tells about the importance of electrophilicity of the metal centre, the steric bulk of the applied ligands, and the route of syntheses. Trialkyltantalum complexes were synthesized by salt elimination or toluene elimination by reacting the corresponding lithiated ligand with trialkyltantalum dichloride or the corresponding ligand with pentabenzyltantalum, respectively. These trialkyltantalum complexes are unusually thermally stable towards alpha-H elimination and form rather unstable organocations. Bis(aminopyridinato) complexes of zirconium were prepared using salt elimination route. The steric bulk of the ligands prevented the redistribution to tris- or tetrakis(aminopyridinato) zirconium complexes. These zirconium complexes are ...
This invention provides surface hardened, abrasion resistant high strength, biocompatible metal medical implants, in particular, titanium alloy implants which do not include any elements which have been shown or suggested as having short term or long term potential adverse effect from a standpoint of biocompatibility. Further, the invention provides methods of strengthening and hardening the surfaces of other titanium, zirconium, and cobalt-based alloy implants with small concentrations of a metal solute such as zirconium, yttrium, tantalum, aluminum, silicon, chromium, or thorium via internal oxidation or nitridation. Alternatively, nitrogen, oxygen, or carbon can be diffused directly into the surface of the implants by interstitial hardening to further increase the surface abrasion resistance of these internally oxidized or internally nitridized implant metal or metal alloys.

Solid-state sections of the ternary Ti-Zr-C and Ti-Hf-C systems were investigated; the complete Zr-Hf-C system was studied from 1600 C to melting using X-ray, DTA, melting point, and metallographic techniques on chemically analyzed alloys; a complete phase diagram for the Zr-Hf-C system for temperatures above 1600 C was established. The hafnium metal used contained 4 At.% zirconium. The Ti-Zr-C system contains a miscibility gap in the monocarbide region; the miscibility gap is completely closed at temperatures above approximately 2150 C.A miscibility gap is also present in the Ti-Hf-C system in the monocarbide region; complete solid solubility exists between the binary monocarbides at temperatures above approximately 2050 C. The Zr-Hf-C system contains a high melting, continuous monocarbide solid-solution in a carbon defect lattice. The a-hafnium phase is stabilized toward higher temperatures by carbon; this phase shows a moderate solubility for carbon and zirconium. One four-phase reaction ...

The hydrogen comes from the zirconium tubes that the fuel is packed into. They use it because it allows neutrons from the fuel pellets in the rods to pass freely between the rods and sustain a nuclear chain reaction. Problem is zirconium reacts to the extreme heat by drawing oxygen from water and steam and letting off hydrogen, which can explode. Apparently they were venting hydrogen from the reactor to get the internal pressure down and it came in contact with a source of ignition somewhere in the outer shell and Boom !. ReplyDelete ...
