After finally getting a ride from the Canadians neighbor, we made it to Tagish for the night and then awoke early to bring the Canadian to work in Whitehorse. He let us take his car so I could get back to Skagway and explore some of the area too. So we got some coffee went to the shop, got a bite to eat and decided to go visit an animal preservation that was about twenty minutes away. I love animals! This place also happened to be close to a hot spring. I may love water and hot springs more that cheesy potatoes and after not being in one for over 5 months it was necessary for me to jump in. I asked the Taiwan girls if it was okay, just for 15 minutes because we were in a rush to get me back to Skagway and they said yes. So I went, paid the $11 to get in and soaked up that hot water for a mere 17 minutes before going back to the car. That was the first time in 5 days I had, kind of taken a bath. I didnt get the real bath that actually cleaned me til I got back to Juneau later that night ...
The Canadian Rangers across the North are organized into individual patrols, identified by the name of their local community, and come under the command of 1 CRPG. There are 25 patrols in Nunavut, 22 patrols in the Northwest Territories, 12 in the Yukon Territory, and one in Atlin, British Columbia. Most of the patrols in the NWT and Nunavut can only be reached by air. Commercial airlines, charter or Twin Otter aircraft of 440 Transport Squadron facilitate travel to these isolated patrols. The exceptions to this situation are the NWT patrols of Behchokǫ̀, Fort Simpson, Fort Resolution, and Fort Smith; these communities can be reached by an all-weather, year-round road. During the long winter season, travel to the villages of Whatì, Gamèti, Wekweeti and Trout Lake can be accomplished by ice road. All the patrols in the Yukon Territory, less the community of Old Crow, can be reached by an all-weather road system. The Canadian Ranger patrols reflect the demographics of their communities and ...
PLoS ONE 12(1): e0169486. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0169486. The timing of the first entry of humans into North America is still hotly debated within the scientific community. Excavations conducted at Bluefish Caves (Yukon Territory) from 1977 to 1987 yielded a series of radiocarbon dates that led archaeologists to propose that the initial dispersal of human groups into Eastern Beringia (Alaska and the Yukon Territory) occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). … ⇒. ...
Features attributed to shearing and kolking are exposed in fluvial sediments of the Old Crow River. Folded laminations attributed to fluid shear occur in the upper portion of an 80 cm thick coset of predominantly type B ripple-drift cross-laminated silts. Neither liquefaction nor upward porewater seepage are considered to have been necessary prerequisites for folding. Rather, rapid sedimentation produced sediments weak enough to be folded by fluid shear. Kolking features consist of angular, undercut erosional scours in silty sand and laminated organic silty sands. A kolk is a form of macroturbulence consisting of an intermittent vortex capable of entraining debris which ordinary tractive and hydraulic lifting forces cannot entrain. Kolks have been associated with a steep energy gradient, a low suspended sediment concentration, and dunes. Kolks inferred here probably were not associated with dunes. A steep energy gradient is unlikely unless the kolks were associated with a sudden flood surge ...

DISCUSSION Origins of Skagit River Bald Eagles We believe the origin of adult eagles (i.e., natal region) can be surmised from where they spent most of their time during the breeding season. Results from 2 years of monitoring indicated that all 20 adult eagles we telemetered on the Skagit River originated north of the 49th parallel from broadly distributed breeding populations in British Columbia, Alaska, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon Territory. No telemetered individuals were from breeding populations in the ...

Four late Quaternary cryostratigraphic units are recognized in the unconsolidated valley-bottom deposits of the Klondike area, Yukon Territory. Three of the units, in ice-rich, loessal sediments of pre-Wisconsinan or Wisconsinan age, collectively compose the King Solomon Formation. They are overlain by a Holocene organic unit. The units are distinguished by their cryostratigraphic characteristics and oxygen-isotope ratios of included ground ice. The basal unit is the Last Chance Creek Member, a pre-Late Wisconsinan deposit, containing preserved ice wedges (δ18O ≈ -28 to -26‰; δD ≈ -225 to -209‰). The overlying Quartz Creek Member, a Late Wisconsinan unit, is dominated by organic-rich loess. Massive ice is noticeably absent, although the sediments are ice rich. The isotopic composition of ice in this unit is characteristic of full-glacial conditions (δ18O ≈ -32 to -29‰; δD ≈ -234 to -257‰). An abrupt change to warmer and wetter conditions at the end of glaciation, prior to the ...
I will be the first to admit that putting the title of Swan Song on a piece about swans is a corny thing to do, but there was no other choice. I wanted to talk about swan songs specifically Tundra Swan songs- so what else could I do? It probably would have been more insightful and clever to label this as Call of the North, Tundra Tunes, or Winter Windpipes, but then again it really doesn t matter what I call it. Pygmalion was the original title of My Fair Lady and that didn t affect the stage or theatre success of the musical, did it? O.K. then, I m here to talk about Cygnus columbianus the Musical. As you might expect, Tundra Swans are visitors from the high north (the north slope of Alaska & the Yukon territories). They come south every winter to bide their time in the relative comfort of our southern cold season. Most of the migrating population flies to the east coast and Chesapeake Bay, but a significant number do their time here in the western end of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Detroit ...

Large quantities of impact-related microspherules have been found in fine-grained sediments retained within seven out of nine, radiocarbon-dated, Late Pleistocene mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) and bison (Bison priscus) skull fragments. The well-preserved fossils were recovered from frozen "muck" deposits (organic-rich silt) exposed within the Fairbanks and Klondike mining districts of Alaska, USA, and the Yukon Territory, Canada. In addition, elevated platinum abundances were found in sediment analysed from three out of four fossil skulls. In view of this new evidence, the mucks and their well preserved but highly disrupted and damaged vertebrate and botanical remains are reinterpreted in part as blast deposits that resulted from several episodes of airbursts and ground/ice impacts within the northern hemisphere during Late Pleistocene time (~46-11 ka B.P.). Such a scenario might be explained by encounters with cometary debris in Earth-crossing orbits (Taurid Complex) that was generated by ...

By now the news of the manhunt had reached the outer world through an emerging medium called radio. Listeners all over Canada, the United States, and the world, were fixed to their sets to hear the latest on the cat and mouse game between a lone, deranged bushman and the might of the famed Canadian Mounties who always got their man. It was like the OJ Simpson case of the time.. The Arctic Circle War represented the end of one era and the beginning of another as the police turned to technology to capture Albert Johnson. They embedded radio into another new tactic - the airplane. World War One flying ace W.R. Wop May and his Bellanca monoplane were hired to find Johnson from the air and radio his position to the dogsled and snowshoe team on the ground.. On February 14, May spotted Johnson on the Eagle River in the Yukon Territory, confirming Johnson had traveled an incredible 150 miles, crossing a 7,000-foot mountain pass in white-out conditions, in temperatures with windchill hitting 60 ...

After making two dark-match appearances under his real name in March 1989,[15] Tenta joined the WWF full-time in September 1989. In his first match after signing on, a dark match on September 21, 1989, he portrayed a lumberjack character named Earthquake Evans that was billed as being from the "Northern Yukon Territory" who was managed by Slick, and defeated Paul Roma.[3] Tenta then made his WWF television debut on the November 11, 1989 edition of WWF Superstars of Wrestling, where he was planted in the audience as a normal spectator at the taping held in Wheeling, West Virginia. During an in-ring interview with Gene Okerlund, Dino Bravo challenged The Ultimate Warrior to a strength competition. In order to demonstrate, Bravo and manager Jimmy Hart suggested that they pick a random audience member to come into the ring and sit on the backs of Bravo and the Ultimate Warrior as they did push-ups to see who could do the most. The Ultimate Warrior agreed, and Hart, after pretending to look around ...
The Herschel Space Observatory is a European Space Agency instrument. It is the largest infrared telescope ever put into orbit. Herschel is named after Sir William Herschel, the discoverer of the infrared spectrum, double stars, and planet Uranus.[1]. The device is sensitive to the far infrared and submillimetre short wavebands. It has a single mirror of 3.5 metres (11.5 ft) in diameter.[2][3][4]. The observatory was carried into orbit in May 2009. It is at the second Lagrangian point (L2) of the Earth-Sun system. At these points, 1,500,000 kilometres (930,000 miles) from the Earth, gravity balances, so the object stays in place.. The Herschel Observatory can record (see) the coldest and dustiest objects in space. For example, dusty galaxies just starting to form new stars.[5] The United States, through NASA, is working with in the ESA-built and operated observatory.[6] It is the fourth cornerstone mission in the ESA science program, along with Rosetta, Planck, and the Gaia mission.. The current situation in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Universitas Academic Hospital, Bloemfontein, is that all neonates undergo a daily routine X-ray (XR) (either chest or abdominal, or both). Those neonates who are intubated are X-rayed more often, for example, with reintubation, repositioning of endotracheal tubes (ETTs) or when deterioration of their condition is noted. This has been our NICU policy for many years. Consequently, neonates are exposed to high levels of radiation, which should be reduced where possible.. A literature search suggested that a study to determine the position of an ETT using bedside ultrasonography (BUS) would be feasible and possible. Several studies have confirmed that BUS can accurately determine the placing of ETTs in a paediatric ICU setting.[1-3] Ultrasound (US) and chest radiography agreed on ETT placement in 83% of cases, with US having a sensitivity of 91% and a specificity of 50%.[4] Hosseini et al.[5] used right subcostal US with good ...

The Arctic is a complex and poorly understood aerosol environment, impacted by strong anthropogenic contributions during winter to spring, and by regional sources in cleaner summer months. Our understanding of summertime Arctic aerosol and cloud remains incomplete, in part due to a scarcity of measurements focusing on the role of regional sources in shaping aerosol chemical and physical properties. To aid in addressing these uncertainties we made measurements of aerosol physical and chemical properties aboard an aircraft, as part of the NETCARE project, allowing measurements from 60 to 3000 meters over ice and open water. This summertime campaign was based in the Canadian High Arctic, at Resolute, NU (74°N), in a general time period and location that was shown to have high biological activity in the surface ocean. Here, we focus on observations of submicron aerosol composition from an aerosol mass spectrometer. Under stable and clean atmospheric conditions with relatively low carbon monoxide and black

The official number of confirmed fentanyl deaths in the Yukon has climbed by one, the Star has learned.. Heather Jones, the territorys acting chief coroner, told the Star today the deaths of eight people in the territory can be attributed to the drug.. In an earlier interview Tuesday, she said additional toxicology results are still pending "for a number of cases.". When the Star last reported the number of lives lost in the Yukon to the potent opioid on Oct. 11, 2017, seven deaths had been officially confirmed since April 2016, when the first occurred.. Jones said the additional death took place prior to Oct. 11. The wait for toxicology results can be as long as six months, she explained.. The territory outsources its toxicology testing to B.C. - a province grappling with its own deadly opioid crisis and a long queue for toxicology results.. Jones would not identify where in the territory the deaths happened, as this could lead to the identification of the victims, she explained.. Emily Jones, ...
Many studies have shown that changes in nitrogen (N) availability affect primary productivity in a variety of terrestrial systems, but less is known about the effects of the changing N cycle on soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition. We used a variety of techniques to examine the effects of chronic N amendments on SOM chemistry and microbial community structure and function in an alpine tundra soil. We collected surface soil (0-5 cm) samples from five control and five long-term N-amended plots established and maintained at the Niwot Ridge Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) site. Samples were bulked by treatment and all analyses were conducted on composite samples. The fungal community shifted in response to N amendments, with a decrease in the relative abundance of basidiomycetes. Bacterial community composition also shifted in the fertilized soil, with increases in the relative abundance of sequences related to the Bacteroidetes and Gemmatimonadetes, and decreases in the relative abundance ...

The Yukon Liberal Party wants to open a new "collaborative primary health-care facility," a kind of one-stop medical shop, for about $5 million a year.. It would be both a walk-in and an appointment-based facility - a place for non-emergency patients to go.. "It tends to a be a place where people can come in and access the care they need, including physicians," said Mount Lorne Liberal candidate Colleen Wirth, drawing on her 30 years of experience as a registered nurse.. "They also may need to see a dietician; they may need to see a pharmacist," Wirth said Thursday.. "Its under one roof.". Currently, the only place for Whitehorse patients to go is the Whitehorse General Hospital emergency room, she said.. "Facilities such as this will save us money by decreasing non-emergency visits at the emergency department at the hospital and save us money over the long term by preventing some health problems from occurring.". The Liberal Party isnt talking about building a new facility. Instead, it plans ...
