The production methods for dental ceramics have improved greatly over the years . Increased proportion of crystalline particles has led to higher resistance to functional loads, but also changed the optical properties of the material . An yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) popularly called zirconia has been the most common dental high-strength ceramic for some years. Y-TZP contains only polycrystalline particles in a metastable tetragonal crystal structure, and is the dental ceramic material with the highest fracture strength available today . Dental zirconias are mainly used for crowns, fixed dental prostheses and implant components. The strength of zirconia depends on the density of the polycrystalline particles and quality of the product . The manufacturing process among the zirconia restorations differs with regard to material composition, processing and machining process of the milling blanks . The machining process can be hard-machining or soft-machining. The ...

Mucosal seal formation around dental abutments is critical to the successful integration of dental implants into the human oral cavity. No information exists for how clinically relevant polishing procedures for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured (CAD/CAM) zirconia abutments affects cellular responses important to mucosal seal formation. CAD/CAM zirconia was divided into four groups for clinically relevant polishing utilizing commercial polishing heads: control, coarse, coarse plus medium, and coarse plus medium plus fine. Surfaces were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and optical profilometry (OP). Subsequently, human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were seeded onto the zirconia surfaces. Proliferation was measured via a quantitative SEM technique and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) phosphorylation status was measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results showed an increase in proliferation on all polished surfaces as compared
YB66 was discovered in 1960[17] and its structure was solved in 1969.[16] The structure is face-centered cubic, with space group Fm3c (No. 226), Pearson symbol cF1936 and lattice constant a = 2.3440(6) nm. There are 13 boron sites B1-B13 and one yttrium site. The B1 sites form one B12 icosahedron and the B2-B9 sites make up another icosahedron. These icosahedra arrange in a thirteen-icosahedron unit (B12)12B12 which is called supericosahedron. The icosahedron formed by the B1 site atoms is located at the center of the supericosahedron. The supericosahedron is one of the basic units of the boron framework of YB66. There are two types of supericosahedra: one occupies the cubic face centers and another, which is rotated by 90°, is located at the center of the cell and at the cell edges. Thus, there are eight supericosahedra (1248 boron atoms) in the unit cell.[15] Another structure unit of YB66 is B80 cluster of 80 boron sites formed by the B10 to B13 sites.[15] All those 80 sites are partially ...
YTTRIUM [symbol, Y; atomic weight, 89.0 (O = 16)], a metallic chemical clement. In its character yttrium is closely allied to, and in nature is always associated with, cerium, lanthanum, didymium and erbium (see Rare Earths). For the preparation of yttrium compounds the best raw material is gadolinite, which, according to König, consists of 22.61% of silica, 34.64 of yttria, Y2O3, and 42.75 of the oxides of erbium, cerium, didymium, lanthanum, iron, beryllium, calcium, magnesium and sodium. The extraction (as is the case with all the rare earths) is a matter of great difficulty. Metallic yttrium is obtainable as a dark grey powder by reducing the chloride with potassium, or by electrolysing the double chloride of yttrium and sodium. It decomposes water slowly in the cold, and more rapidly on heating. Yttria, Y2O3, is a yellowish white powder, which at high temperatures radiates out a most brilliant while light. It is soluble, slowly but completely, in mineral acids. It is recognized by its very ...
Purpose: To determine the degree of conversion (DC), physicochemical properties, and microshear bond strength (mu SBS) of experimental self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) to dentin and yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramic. Materials and Methods: Dual-curing cements were formulated with UDMA, HEMA, bis-GMA, and TEG-DMA as the organic matrix. 2MP (bis 2-(methacryloyloxy)-ethyl-phosphate) and GDMAP (1,3-glycerol dimethacrylate phosphate) were added to impart self-adhesive characteristics. A control group was formulated without self-etch methacrylates. Silanized particles were incorporated. Photoactivation was carried out using an LED light-curing unit (1200 mW/cm(2)) for 20 s. Infrared spectroscopy assessed the DC immediately and after 24 h. pH was analyzed in real time and recorded after 48 h. Water sorption (W-sp), water solubility (W-sl), and film thickness measurements followed ISO 4049. mu SBS of the cements to dentin and Y-TZP was evaluated immediately and after 3 ...

To relate the electrical properties to the structural characteristics, the crystallinity ...
Ceramic abrasive grits comprising alpha alumina and at least about 0.5 percent by weight yttria are prepared by mixing an aqueous dispersion of alpha alumina monohydrate and yttrium compound, gelling the resultant mixture, drying the gel to produce a dried solid, crushing the dried material to produce grits, calcining the dried grits to substantially remove bound volatile materials, and firing the grits to produce a ceramic material. The yttrium for the most part is in the form of a yttrium aluminum garnet. Abrasive products comprising the abrasive grits are also claimed as is a method of grinding a workpiece with such abrasive products.

Calcium silicide (CaSi2), also called calcium disilicide, is an inorganic compound, a silicide of calcium. It is a whitish or dark grey to black solid matter with melting point 1033 °C. It is insoluble in water, but may decompose when subjected to moisture, evolving hydrogen and producing calcium hydroxide. Decomposes in hot water. It is flammable and may ignite spontaneously in air. Its CAS number is 12013-56-8. Industrial calcium silicide usually contains iron and aluminium as the primary contaminants, and low amounts of carbon and sulfur. Calcium silicide is used for manufacture of special metal alloys, e.g. for removing phosphorus and as a deoxidizer. In pyrotechnics, it is used as fuel to make special mixtures, e.g. for production of smokes, in flash compositions, and in percussion caps. Specification for pyrotechnic calcium silicide is MIL-C-324C. In some mixtures it may be substituted with ferrosilicon. Silicon-based fuels are used in some time delay mixtures, e.g. for controlling of ...

Hi all -- I asked Jun to clarify his nickel silicide process as follow up to his request a couple of weeks ago and his original request in July. Attached here is the proposed flow. I spoke with Jim McV and Jun about this. Jun agrees that he will do all the wet cleans in his own decontaminated lab ware at wbgeneral. This should, we hope, address concerns about possible contamination in the wet benches. If Ive understood correctly, this is what Jim McV recommends: Ni dep - SCT -- Jun will have to work with Ed on this. Anneal - AG4108 -- this is OK if metal silicide quartzware is used LTO dep - OK on the metal side Contact etch - OK on the amtetcher Al deposition - OK on the gryphon if pre-dep etch is not used (will have to check with Jun) The remaining issues (which I neglected to ask Jun or Jim): P5000 Al etch -- is this OK? (Presumably, no nickel silicide is exposed?) Plasma O2 clean - where? (Im presuming this is necessary) Al dep - check if Jun needs pre-dep etch How does this sound so far? ...
Here, we perform molecular dynamics simulation on cubic ZrO 2 and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) to elucidate defect cluster formation resulting from radiation damage, and evaluate the impact of Y-dopants. Interstitial clusters composed of split-interstitial building blocks, i.e., Zr-Zr or Y-Zr are formed. Moreover, oxygen vacancies control cation defect migration; in their presence, Zr interstitials aggregate to form split-interstitials whereas in their absence Zr interstitials remain immobile, as isolated single-interstitials. Y-doping prevents interstitial cluster formation due to sequestration of oxygen vacancies. ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Synthesis of Melted Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide-0.325Ag Superconductors Contained in a Solid Silver Cladding at Reduced Oxygen Partial Pressures. AU - Lee, Haigun. AU - Park, Haiwoong. PY - 2003/11. Y1 - 2003/11. N2 - This paper presents a study on the feasibility of concurrent synthesis and melt-processing of Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide-0.325 Ag (Y123-Ag) superconductor by thermo-mechanical processing of the silver-clad precursor containing BaCuO2.5 at reduced oxygen partial pressures. At 950-955°C the melted Y123-Ag superconductor was contained in a solid silver cladding which melted at 960-965°C. After 15 min at 950-965°C and oxygen partial pressures of 0.28 and 0.55 kPa, melted orthorhombic Y123-Ag formed. On extending the heat-treatment from 15 to 30 min, the orthorhombic Y123-Ag changed to tetragonal Y123-Ag which was supported directly by a series of rapid-heat, soak, and rapid-cool experiments at 950°C (PO2 = 0.28 kPa), and thus direct formation of orthorhombic ...

Oxidation of FeCrAl(Re), when exposed to similar to 35 ppm of water as sole supply of oxygen in predominantly nitrogen atmosphere, has two characteristic signatures. One is the internal nitridation owing to chromia nodules acting windows toward nitrogen permeation locally short-circuiting the protective alpha-Al2O3 scale. The second remarkable feature is the growth of thick, apparently defect-rich alumina scale under yttria-rich nodules. Hence, one part of the present study comprises exploratory DFT calculations to discriminate between the impacts of chromia and yttria viz. nitrogen permeation. The second part concerns boundary conditions for apparent rapid growth of alumina under yttria nodules. Yttria-associated surface energy stabilization of defect-rich alumina in presence of water was argued to involve hydrolysis-driven hydroxylation of said interface. Subsequent inward growth of the alumina scale was associated with outward diffusion of oxygen vacancies to be accommodated by the remaining proton
The invented method can be used to form silicide contacts to an integrated MISFET device. Field isolation layers are formed to electrically isolate a portion of the silicon substrate, and gate, source and drain regions are formed therein. A polysilicon runner(s) that makes an electrical connection to the integrated device, is formed on the isolation layers. The structure is subjected to ion implantation to amorphized portions of the silicon gate, source, drain and runner regions. A metal layer is formed in contact with the amorphized regions, and the metal layer overlying the active region of the integrated device is selectively irradiated using a mask. The light melts part of the gate, and amorphized source and drain regions while the remaining portions of the integrated device and substrate remain in their solid phases. Metal diffuses into the melted gate, source and drain regions which are thus converted into respective silicide alloy regions. Preferably, during selective irradiation, a portion of

Plasma spray forming ceramic components on a mandrel provides a way of net shape forming of difficult to machine materials. In addition, the structure of plasma sprayed ceramics contains fine porosity that improves strain accommodation as compared to sintered ceramics. However, plasma spray forming causes complex stress states in materials that may lead to cracking during spraying or during separation from the mandrel. Monitoring surface temperatures by infrared videography and controlling deposit surface temperature by directed cooling can be used to minimize thermal gradients and minimize part cracking. Control of thermal stresses is also necessary for proper separation of the sprayed part from the mandrel. Details of the plasma spray forming of yttrium oxide crucibles show how temperature monitoring, directed cooling, and robot manipulation are used to produce a crack free crucible.. ...

Swedish chemist Carl Gustaf Mosander discovered terbium in 1843. He detected it as an impurity in yttrium oxide, Y2O3. Yttrium is named after the village of Ytterby in Sweden. Terbium was not isolated in pure form until the advent of ion exchange techniques.[13]. Mosander first separated yttria into three fractions, all named for the ore: yttria, erbia, and terbia. Terbia was originally the fraction that contained the pink color, due to the element now known as erbium. Erbia (containing what we now call terbium) originally was the fraction that was essentially colorless in solution. The insoluble oxide of this element was noted to be tinged brown. Later workers had difficulty in observing the minor colorless erbia, but the soluble pink fraction was impossible to miss. Arguments went back and forth as to whether erbia even existed. In the confusion, the original names got reversed, and the exchange of names stuck, so that the pink fraction referred eventually to the solution containing ...

This 2017 report sets out recommendations for branch mismatch rules that would bring the treatment of these structures into line with the treatment of hybrid mismatch arrangements as set out in the 2015 Report on Neutralising the Effects of Hybrids Mismatch Arrangements (Action 2 Report). Branch mismatches arise where the ordinary rules for allocating income and expenditure between the branch and head office result in a portion of the net income of the taxpayer escaping the charge to taxation in both the branch and residence jurisdiction. Unlike hybrid mismatches, which result from conflicts in the legal treatment of entities or instruments, branch mismatches are the result of differences in the way the branch and head office account for a payment made by or to the branch. The 2017 report identifies five basic types of branch mismatch arrangements that give rise to one of three types of mismatches: deduction / no inclusion (D/NI) outcomes, double deduction (DD) outcomes, and indirect deduction / no

The formation of Ni silicides has been successfully monitored by Raman spectroscopy. Ni silicides formed at different annealing temperatures using rapid thermal annealing were analyzed using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Raman spectroscopy was further used to examine these samples. The results showed that Raman spectroscopy could accurately identify the phases of Ni silicides formed at various temperatures. These findings were used to demonstrate the increased thermal stability of NiSi by the addition of Pt. This study demonstrates the applicability of Raman spectroscopy for monitoring the formation of NiSi, which was suggested to be the future silicide for deep submicrometer integrated circuit processing. Raman spectroscopy offers a unique tool for phase identification at localized areas and mapping characterization of Ni silicides with micrometer spatial resolution ...
bold{Structures and Electronic Properties of Self-assembled Pt Silicide Nanowires on Si(100)$ We investigated the formation of Pt silicide nanowires on a Si(100) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. Pt silicide nanowires with a tetragonal Pt2Si structure are formed along the step edges of Si(100). Pt-induced c(4 $\times$ 2) reconstructions also appear adjacent to the tetragonal $Pt_2Si$ nanowires. Formation of the $Pt_2Si$ nanowires is attributed to the anisotropic lattice mismatches between the tetragonal $Pt_2Si$ structure and Si(100). Scanning tunneling spectroscopy data show that the nanowires are metallic. The stoichiometry of Pt silicide is confirmed by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. $\bold{Unidirectional Pt Silicide Nanowires Grown on Vicinal Si(100)}$ The formation and electronic properties of unidirectional $Pt_2Si$ nanowires grown on a Si(100)-2° off surface were investigated. Composites containing 3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with various amounts of CNTs (3Y-TZP / X wt% CNT, X= 0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 and 5) were processed by spark plasma sintering. Microscopic analysis proves that CNTs were well dispersed and embedded in grain boundaries of the sintered body. High temperature mechanical properties have been investigated using mechanical spectroscopy and low stress (6 MPa) creep. The isothermal spectrum (measured at 1600 K) consists of a mechanical loss peak at a frequency of about 0.1 Hz, which is superimposed on an exponential increase at low frequency. The absence of a well-marked peak in monolithic 3Y-TZP is justified considering that restoring force decreases at low frequencies or high temperatures due to the elasticity of neighboring grains. Therefore, strain is no more restricted and the mechanical loss increases exponentially, which is correlated to macroscopic creep. However, with CNT ...

This randomized phase III trial studies 90-yttrium ibritumomab tiuxetan and combination chemotherapy compared with combination chemotherapy alone before stem cell transplant in treating patients with diffuse large b-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has returned after a period of improvement. Radioactive substances linked to monoclonal antibodies, such as 90-yttrium ibritumomab tiuxetan, can bind to cancer cells and give off radiation which may help kill cancer cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as carmustine, etoposide phosphate, cytarabine, and melphalan (BEAM), work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. It is not yet known whether 90-yttrium ibritumomab tiuxetan and BEAM before a stem cell transplant are more effective than BEAM alone in treating patients with diffuse large b-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.. ...
0078]Afterwards, a thermal oxidation barrier 490 may be formed on the patterned metal layer, the metal silicide layer, or the double layer thereof 480. In this study, the application of a calcium-based bifunctional catalyst/sorbent is investigated in modified chemical looping steam methane reforming (CLSMR) process for in situ CO2 sorption and H2 production. The yttrium promoted Ca-Co samples were synthesized and applied as bifunctional catalysts/sorbent. The influence of reduction temperature (500-750 °C), Ca/Co and Ca/Y ratios (1.5-∞ and 3-18, respectively) and catalyst life time are determined in CLSMR process. The physicochemical transformation of fresh, used and regenerated samples after 16 redox cycles are determined using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The effect of yttrium promoter on the structure of catalyst and regeneration step on the reversibility of bifunctional catalyst/sorbent was two important factors. The characterization results revealed that the presence

0055] In this step, only an upper portion of the Si layers 16 and 26 are silicided. Accordingly, the Si layers 16 remain between the SiGe layers 15 and the silicide layers 17, and the Si layers 26 remain between the SiGe layers 25 and the silicide layers 27. The conductivity type impurities in the silicided portions of the Si layers 16 and 26 are extruded to the non-silicided portions by the forming of the silicide layers 17 and 27, and the SiGe layers 15 and 25 suppress diffusion of the extruded conductivity type impurities. As a result, the conductivity type impurities are concentrated into the Si layers 16 between the SiGe layers 15 and the silicide layers 17 and into the Si layers 26 between the SiGe layers 25 and the silicide layers 27, thereby decreasing contact resistances at the interfaces between the silicide layers 17 and the Si layers 16 and at the interfaces between the silicide layers 27 and the Si layers 26 ...

The recent discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in magnetically doped topological insulators cooled below in the milikelvin regime represents breakthrough in the field of spintronics(1). Theoretically, the QAHE should occur in graphene proximity coupled to a ferromagnetic insulator(2) but with the promise of much higher operating temperatures for practical applications. Hints of proximity-induced magnetism in graphene coupled to yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films have been reported (3) although the QAHE remains unobserved; the lack of a fully developed plateau in graphene/YIG devices can be attributed to poor interfacial coupling and therefore a dramatically reduced magnetic proximity effect. Here we report the deposition and characterisation of epitaxial thin-films of YIG on lattice-matched gadolinium gallium garnet substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Pristine exfoliated graphene flakes transferred mechanically onto the YIG are reported alongside results that correlate the effects

Demand is increasing for the determination of the rare-earth elements (REE) and yttrium in geologic materials. Due to their low natural abundance in many materials and the interferences that occur in many methods of determination, a separation procedure utilizing gradient strong-acid cation-exchange chromatography is often used to preconcentrate and isolate these elements from the host-rock matrix. Two separate gradient strong-acid cation-exchange procedures were characterized and the major elements as well as those elements thought to provide the greatest interference for the determination of the REE in geologic materials were tested for separation from the REE. Simultaneous inductively coupled argon plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICAP-AES) measurements were used to construct the chromatograms for the elution studies, allowing the elution patterns of all the elements of interest to be determined in a single fraction of eluent. In this work, the composition of oxygen-containing yttrium hydride (YHO) thin films was investigated. The films were prepared by reactive sputter deposition, and were found for have oxygen contents on the order of several tens of per cents. We present depth-resolved atomic composition profiles of photochromic YHO films to study the connection between composition, photochromic properties and growth parameters. Two films, deposited at different pressures, were prepared and characterized using ion beam analysis techniques, i.e. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and elastic recoil detection analysis. We found that an increase of deposition pressure results in larger [O]/[Y] ratios, while the ratio [H]/[Y] becomes reduced. We also report a gradual oxidation of the films exposed to air as well as hydrogen release under ion ...

(C5Me5)2Y(η3-C3H5) reacts with 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane, 9-BBN, to form single crystals containing both a borane-substituted allyl complex, (C5Me5)2Y[η3-C3H4(BC8H14)], and a borohydride, (C5Me5)2Y(μ-H)2BC8H14, that can be synthesized directly from 9-BBN and the yttrium hydride, [(C5Me5)2YH]x.
Oxygen-containing yttrium hydride thin films exhibit photochromic behavior: Transparent thin films reversibly switch from a transparent state to a photodarkened state after being illuminated with UV or blue light. From optical spectrophotometry and ellipsometry measurements of the transparent state and photodarkened state, it is concluded that the photochromic effect can be explained by the gradual growth, under illumination, of metallic domains within the initial wide-band-gap semiconducting lattice. This conclusion is supported by Raman measurements.. ...
We report on a study of the fabrication of submicron silicide structures with a resistless lithography technique. Several different metals can be used as a basis for producing silicide using this method; in this work, results will be discussed for both platinum and nickel silicide. The feasibility of producing nanostructures using polycrystalline silicon as a base growth layer for metal-oxide- semiconductor, and other device applications have also been demonstrated. Threshold doses for this method for submicron lines (,50 nm) and square areas were obtained in order to establish a framework for the fabrication of more complex devices. Preliminary electrical measurements were carried out which indicate that the resistivity of the silicide is 45 [mu omega] cm, and that the barrier height of the silicide/(high resistivity silicon) interface is 0.56 eV ...

This thesis focuses on the reactivity of polyoxometalate (POM) building blocks; more specifically, those derived from the Keggin {M12} and Wells-Dawson {M18} structural motifs. Lacunary Keggin and Wells-Dawson cages, i.e. those containing metal-atom site vacancies, are highly reactive and versatile fragments that can be employed as structural building units (SBUs) towards the design of novel high nuclearity compounds as well as the assembly of infinite supramolecular framework materials. The isolation of a selection of intermediate species from simple one-pot procedures has been made possible though the use of the water soluble tertiary amine N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine (bhep) as a pH buffer. These intermediate Keggin-based POM fragments represent monomeric units of previously-reported transition metal-substituted polyoxometalate (TMSP) motifs. This multifunctional amine can be used either as a pH buffer or as a protonated counter cation and consequently plays a key role in the ...

The realization of plasmo-electronic integrated circuits in a silicon chip will be enabled by two new plasmonic materials that are proposed and modeled in this article. The first is ion-implanted Si (n-type or p-type) at the surface of an intrinsic Si chip. The second is a thin-layer silicide such as Pd2Si, NiSi, PtSi2 WSi2 or CoSi2 formed at the Si chip surface. For doping concentrations of 1020 cm-3 and 1021 cm-3, our dispersion calculations show that bound surface plasmon polaritons will propagate with low loss on stripe-shaped plasmonic waveguides over the 10 to 55 µm and 2.8 to 15 µm wavelength ranges, respectively. For Pd2Si/Si plasmonic waveguides, the wavelength range of 0.5 to 7.5 µm is useful and here the propagation lengths are 1 to 2300 µm. For both doped and silicided guides, the SPP mode field extends much more into the air above the stripe than it does into the conductive stripe material.. ©2008 Optical Society of America. Weve been promised portable fuel cells for years, but tech from SiGNa Chemistry might have a real shot at taking the concept mainstream. Instead of the more commonly used methanol, the outfit serves up a sodium silicide mix which its begun licensing to companies bearing the SiGNa fueled logo. One example is PowerTrekk that first went on sale in Europe last December and is now making its way to the US this spring. The special salt concoction comes packaged into 5Wh hockey puck cartridges -- appropriately called Pukks -- to generate power and subsequently juice whatever device you plug into it over USB. Itll ship stateside in May for around $200, replete with an onboard 5Wh lithium-ion battery which acts as a rechargeable buffer, ensuring youll still have some juice even after you run out of cartridges. Catch the power generating tech in a video after the break.
Sintered yttria and sintered dysprosia can be used to make single- component thermistors having typical thermistor geometries and operable in the temperature range 500 deg. to 1,200 deg. C. However, at these temperatures, instability of platinum electrodes can contribute a slight aging effect if the thermistor is kept near 1,200 deg. C for long periods. Typical characteristics at 500 deg. C for a

Owing to its high stability in aqueous solution and high quantum efficiency, tantalum based oxyntride (TaON) has attracted increasing attentions for application as visible light photocatalyst. However, despite the recent progress in photocatalytic studies, its bulk charge transport mechanisms are yet to be discovered because of the lack of single crystal sample. In this paper, high quality single crystalline TaON(100) thin film was prepared on cubic YSZ(100) surface by reactive RF magnetron sputtering to avail the understandings of charge transport mechanism so as to improve the device efficiency. The stoichiometry, crystal phase and structure were examined in situ by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ex situ by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TaON film crystallizes in monoclinic β-phase with its [010]/[001] directions aligned to those of the substrate. The small band gap of 2.5 eV as well as the high structure perfection suggests better ...

In 1787, Swedish part-time chemist Carl Axel Arrhenius found a heavy black rock near the Swedish village of Ytterby, Sweden (part of the Stockholm Archipelago).[1] Thinking that it was an unknown mineral containing the newly discovered element tungsten,[2] he named it ytterbite.[note 1] Finnish scientist Johan Gadolin identified a new oxide or earth in Arrhenius sample in 1789, and published his completed analysis in 1794;[3] in 1797, the new oxide was named yttria.[4] In the decades after French scientist Antoine Lavoisier developed the first modern definition of chemical elements, it was believed that earths could be reduced to their elements, meaning that the discovery of a new earth was equivalent to the discovery of the element within, which in this case would have been yttrium.[note 2] Until the early 1920s, the chemical symbol Yt was used for the element, after which Y came into common use.[5] Yttrium metal was first isolated in 1828 when Friedrich Wöhler heated anhydrous ...

Abstract: Silicide growth via reaction between a metallic film and a Si substrate has been well documented. In general, atomic transport kinetic during the growth of silicides is considered to be the same as during equilibrium diffusion, despite the reaction and its possible injection of point-defects in the two phases on each side of the interface. To date, the main studies aiming to investigate atomic transport during silicide growth used immobile markers in order to determine which element diffuses the fastest during growth and in which proportion. The quantitative measurements of effective diffusion coefficients during growth was also performed using Deal-and-Groove-type of models, however, these effective coefficients are in general not in agreement with the interdiffusion coefficients calculated using the equilibrium diffusion coefficients measured during diffusion experiments. In general, atomic transport kinetic measurements during growth and without growth are performed using different ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Use of a modified zirconia support in the separation of immunoproteins. AU - Subramanian, Anuradha. AU - Sarkar, Sabyasachi. PY - 2002/1/25. Y1 - 2002/1/25. N2 - Zirconia beads (25-38 μm in diameter) were modified with N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid to generate a zirconia based pseudoaffinity support, further referred to as r_PEZ. The influence of pH, salt concentration and temperature on the binding of human immunoglobulin G (hIgG) to r_PEZ was studied. Temperature had no significant impact on the maximum binding capacity (Qmax), and the equilibrium-binding constant (Kd), whereas pH and the salt concentration had a noticeable impact on both Qmax and Kd. The Qmax value of 55 mg hIgG/ml of bead was obtained at a pH of 5.5 and found to decrease with an increase of pH. The modified zirconia support allowed the separation of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA and IgM) from untreated human serum. Elution was possible under mild conditions with a step salt gradient. ...

Abstract: The effect of ion implantation of yttrium on the oxidation behavior of Ni3Al base alloy IC6 at 1100°C was investigated by SEM/EDS, TEM and XRD methods. The results indicated that after Y ion implantation, the surface of IC6 alloy changed from large column crystals to fine distributed nano-crystals, and the density of dislocations in distorted region increased with the implanted ions dose, which can act as high-diffusivity path and oxide core. Comparing to un-implanted IC6 alloy, Y-implantation increased the oxidation rate of IC6 alloy in initial 25 h at 1100°C, but decreased the maximum weight gain and the oxidation rate in final period. Moreover, the oxide scales of Y-implanted IC6 alloy were more continuous and compact due to the benefit effect of yttrium, and had better coherence to substrate through reduction of oxide grain size resulting in oxide scale plasticity improvement. Hence the proper amount of implanted Y could improve the oxidation resistance of IC6 alloy at 1100°C in ...
